Yeah, but before buying the books, I'd definitely try it out. I can say you though that I was hooked from the moment I started reading. The … morefirst volume is the weakest though, so you should at least read until they reach the prison.
You should check out thewalkingdead.com from time to time. They often have humble bundles for the comics. A few weeks ago, they sold the first 120 issues, collected in 20 Trade Paperbacks for about 80 Dollars, I think. (Instead of about 200).
