What's With People Refusing To Accept Clem's Race?

Okay, so, from the moment I played EP1 of the first season, I could tell the obvious that she was mixed, especially after seeing the family photo. But the more I got into the game, looking at different forums and searching out information between episodes, I see all these people saying that she's straight white? And I'm just... is it because her voice actress is white or something? It's a minute detail, yeah, but I really don't understand why people are getting bent out of shape over the race of the character?

  • She's african american. She may look mixed, but she's not. Confirmed by the developers.

There's no room open for discussion on this one.

  • the reason for this, is that she looks pretty white, while the devs have said the she is African-American, this has caused a lot of confusuion

PS: making another thread about this will mean more heated discussions, good job. NOT!!!

  • Yeah she's black. I've never had any doubt about this. Don't really understand why anybody would think any differently.

When you check her wiki it lists her as African American and links you to an interview with one of the devs who confirms this as well. Just google "Clementine Telltale" and hit the wiki if you need to reference it.

  • I really don't understand your ''burn'' but.. okay?

  • Pretty much the only reason I can think of why somebody would not want Clem to be african-american is racism. ._.

Oh, I see. I just don't understand what the big deal is. Then again, I've never been a racist and wasn't raised to be, so I guess I can't understand what they're thinking.

  • The developers made her as white as possible for someone who's ostensibly black, this is why people are confused.

I just pretend she's adopted and an alien.

  • I guess I always saw Clem as a white person, then all of a sudden she is afro-american. To me it was like you had a normal sized person but telltale says she's fat. Like... uhh? That's how I feel anyways :D

  • Well looking at that picture of Clem/Jane it could be she just got a lot of color from the sun, but if you compare to Rebecca/Clem they are the same color. So that part is clear, but in s1 she looks completely white.

    Yeah, no.

  • Yeah, because a lot of young african american get a darker skin tone as they grow up. Trust me, I'm a doctor.

  • She's Clementine. And we love her. End of discussion.

  • I always thought she was Blasian. I can't see how anyone ever thought she was white, though.

  • Even if her mom was mixed, it doesn't necessarily mean she still can't be African American. After all, Malcolm X's mother was mixed as well, and he was treated like any other black person.

  • Same here. I always knew she was African American, but I can at least see why people thought she was Blasian. My friend thought she was too.

I see all these people saying that she's straight white?

So it turns up people are racist...

  • My take on this is that realistically... she is mixed. But they are saying she has more black then whatever other race is in her. Which is completely fine with me. They can say she's African American because she mostly is. You can see it in her skin tone too. She's more Rebecca than Jane

  • I'm pretty sure the dad was all African American, and the mom was half Asian half African American.

Not judging but how did you always see her as white when he saw her parents picture in the very first episode?

  • Since Clem is confirmed to be african-american, it's pretty much just the fault of a low res photo.

  • Maybe I missed it because color is not a factor that matters to me? Idk bro.

  • I don´t know why her being African-American would even bother anyone. Does anything about her personality or character change because of that? Not really. She could be green for all I care. I love her anyway.

  • Does it matter what color a fictional game character is? Come on guys we don't live in Ferguson.

Yes. Because intolerant douchebangs still play video games.

  • Well from the photo her parents could be Asian or black, but its really hard to tell from seeing zombies. I don't think she is white, because both of her parents were people of some sort of color.
