Did People Complain About Season 1?
I haven't been around long enough to know, and I'm too lazy to trudge through old threads looking for an answer.
Did people complain about Season 1 like Season 2? If so, what were the complaints about? Because I, myself found that S1 was generally better than S2. But S2 was more emotional in my book.
I'm just curious, to know if S1 had hate on its storyline like S2.

I wasn't around (only played season one 20 days before season 2 was released lel), but I'm sure (like all games), it got plenty of hate. One major thing I remember hearing a couple weeks back is that a lot of Telltale fans were upset that they had started to branch out from their usual comedy genre when season 1 was announced.
No one really complained about Season 1 because it was amazing.
To this day it's still my favorite story.
Season 2 didn't build itself off of Season 1 and feels like it's own thing. It's really not a great sequel. I was super disappointed with it.
I've seen a few complain about how long a few of the episodes were. Apart from that, not much else.
I wasn't on this board at the time, but I remember quite a lot of complaining online on other sites once Season 1 ended. It didn't really last that long after a few months a lot of the complaining just died out.
Eh...there's never any way to please everybody in a fandom so probably.
funny since now people are complaining that the episodes are too short
I would've loved longer episodes, S2 was such a rush.
Tell me about it. Some people just aren't satisfied.
I totally agree. If all the episodes in season 2 were half an hour longer, I would have been a happier man.
Back when I lurked the site and didn't have an account I had seen complaining, but not as much as Season Two.
Yes it did. Mainly for ignoring choice or because somebody's favourite character died
I would say though that season 2 has been criticised a lot more and when season 1 was criticised people normally didn't take it as seriously.
oh we had complaining let me count 3 off the top of my head
carly's death: noone would shut up about it. thank god it died down you thought the nick sarah thing was bad oh boy.
chuck's death: again you thought the nick and sarah thing was bad
episode 5 had the same length as all of season 2 and no one complained i mean dang.
the only episode i personally felt was to long was episode 4.
If you go back to the first page of the TWD forums you can find a petition to not make the game.
that is still hilarious.
Did you see it?
it keeps being brought up wherever a new telltale game is comeing out.
I'm gonna check out the GoT forums then.
there wasn't much hate on the actual story, however people did complain about the lack of choice, or consequences for the choices made, i was a bit miffed by the "lack of choice" at first as well, but it grew on me, and i realised it made for a much stronger story if the choices have minimal consequences and they are mainly just player preference, obviously i would like a game like the walking dead that took years to develope and has thousands of different permutations, but that is like holodeck level of gaming, and i am willing to wait
i think episode 5 length worked because it was the finale and because Lee was destined to die, so it needed to be constantly pushing forward,, however i think telltale just took the support for episode 5 length as an endorsement to make all of the episodes in season 2 shorter and have less down time, but i don't think it worked as well as they had hoped.
Yea. People loved the first season but there were nitpicks. People complained about how choices don't matter and how long the wait was in between episodes. God, people really hated the wait for episode 103.
I remember a few threads about Carley's death being bumped from a while ago, poor Doug, most people probably didn't even care that he went out as well, though that might be due to the fact that he went out heroically. Or because it was a small minority that saved him. Poor Doug.
Were the episodes in question 3 & 4? Because the puzzles/walking around in those can be tedious or take a long time.
I don't blame people for complaining to be honest.
People will complain because they are people. People love to complain about one thing or another frequently.
Yeah 3 & 4 mostly. I can understand that some people have no patience, but, I thought those episodes flowed very well.
I remember that. It was so stupid. XD
Well i cant see how choices having no meaning could have possibly been a complaint, but I'm willing to bet people were complaining about lee.
Yeah, there was complaining alright. Not as much as Season 2, but it was there.
Lack of choice consequences was a big one, right up there with Carley's death. I remember people were complaining about meaningless choices as far back as Starved for Help, and several people took issue with Campman after No Time Left came out. There's probably plenty more, but it's been, sheesh, years since then so I can't remember much else.
I don't remember any complaints about Lee, but there was plenty of Lilly vs. Kenny. Also "Why did they build up Doug/Carley/Chuck when they were just going to die? Their deaths were meaningless! It was a waste of development!" And "Why did Molly leave? They built up her character! It was a waste of development!"
The main one was the wait between episodes. There was some thread about how Telltale was "in breach of contract." Uh...what? But yeah, there was a lot of complaining. That's why it was kind of amusing when people complained about S2 so much because it wasn't like S1. headdesk
the thing people seem to not understand is chuck kinda never officially joined the group. like arvo he was just along for the ride,
It was more complaining about the story events than the actual development of the game.
Doug/Carley's death brought tons of meaningless threads about how many threatened to stop playing the game if they weren't brought back. And I remember some people complaining about how episode 4 "had too much zombies in it". In hindsight though, it was a lot tamer than the complaining of season two these days.
I wonder if those puzzles would've been better with the fast walk mechanic that was employed in Season 2
I thought Season 1 was a masterpiece.
There were some minor silly elements however, like having to get Kenny drunk to get to the map, and Chuck and Molly being ridiculously invincible after all the effort put in by the writers to make us feel that the world was dangerous.
I wouldn't say that, Dragon Age has a large amount of choices with actual effects, and yet the story and characters are still very well developed and emotional. Hell, you can easily miss 2 very awesome companions if you run through the first actual town after Ostagar. Hell, I'd say Bioware have never really fucked up determinants, all of Mass Effect 2's cast is determinant, but they all have fairly big roles in Mass Effect 3, at the least they have a quest tied to them, as well as a conversation near the end, and at the most they stay in your party. Hell, the Citadel DLC gives ALL of them some fun roles. And there's Wrex from the first game, who becomes pretty fuckin' important. Honestly, I think TellTale should abandon the episodic nature of their games, and just release them as full titles, since they can make sure choices have an impact without people complaining about long gaps between episodes, and they surely have the budget to do so.
i don't think the choices really change anything apart from a few side missions in mass effect or dragon age, they are still very linear.
to have actual impact on the story in the walking dead and it still being cohesive, would take years to make and a much bigger budget, because you would basically have to write, cast, record and produce multiple games in one, and i mean a lot of games in one, it would be 32 different games if there was only one big choice with two possible outcomes per episode or five big choices throughout one big game, and depending on how much that actually changed the game (eg. go north or south in episode/choice one) that could be a lot of script, voice recording, 3d modeling and artwork to be done.
i would love for someone to do something like that (i am a bit disappointed it hasn't already been done), but i don't feel like waiting five to ten years for season 3 of the walking dead to come out, so i am fine with the telltale approach, as long as the story is good, the choices having little impact is acceptable.
It got hate, but not as much as S2.
The forum was a clusterfuck of Lilly vs Kenny threads
Complaints about episode release delays
Episode 4 Around Every Corner got flamed a lot because there wasn't much of a buildup or dramatic events during the episodes, not to mention the numerous plot-holes and unrealism
Decisions not affecting story
Carley death rants
Not enough gameplay
Technical issues eg. deleted saves, decisions not transferring properly, etc.
Season 1 had the benefit of people going into it with little to no expectations
Season 2 did not have that benefit since it was a sequel to a really successful first game and as result people are going to judge it more harshly than they did the the first season
This is really good news for season 3 since it means people will go into with more realistic expectations and it will have much easier job trying to top season 2 than season 2 did trying to top season 1 lol
Add Lee getting bit complaints clear until episode 5 to your list. XD
Change a few names around and remove the technical issues and you get the hate for season 2 right there.
Not every character has a perfect story and a perfect character arc. Same with real life.
