Sound and stuttering on Nexus 7 (2013)

Hi, I bought the season pass but unfortunately I've been unable to play it so far.
On the nexus 7 it stutters and buzzes horribly making it unplayable because the stuttering and static make it impossible to understand whats going on.
I already sent an email report, send feedback and am still waiting on a fix 2 weeks later.
I'm not alone with this issue, the play store is full of this issue with this device.
As this device is last years Flagship android Tablet this should be fixed asap.

Yes Ive wiped cache partition, re-installed the game. Cleared data and all other troubleshooting tips.
I have over 1GB of Ram available while playing. And 10 GB space left.

The device is running:
LRX21P
Android 5.0 Lollipop
32GB version Nexus 7 (2013) (non LTE)

Best, Marc

  • I have the same issue.. until this morning the game was working great.. then I got the Lollipop update and the audio issue started.., same as you I have the Nexus 7 (2013).. hope this get fixed soon.

  • Does anyone at telltale read this? It has been 3 weeks now!!

  • I'm having this issue too - the game is unplayable at times. It skips over entire portions of the dialog, and sometimes I don't have an opportunity to make the choices I want. I'd really like to finish this game!

Nexus 7 (2013) running Lollipop. Though I should say I was having this same issue BEFORE upgrading to Lollipop as well (4.4.4).

  • Thread: Audio broken through headphones on Android Lollipop

I found that after updating my Android Nexus 5 to Lollipop the audio through headphones is unrecognizable. It is garbled and basically just plain broken. Experiencing the same issues on my Nexus 9 so I know it's not the device. Anyone else having issues like this?

I sincerely apologize for the delayed response. We have not heard of this particular issue occurring before Android OS 5.0 Lollipop. I will make sure to pass this information along to the team for further investigation. I hope to have more information in the near future.

  • I would really appreciate some info from telltale here, as this seems to be a very common problem.
It really takes from the experience only being able to play 1 episode and then having to wait 4 weeks+ to continue, seeing as I paid the money for the season pass in hopes I could actually play it. (the system DOES match the requirements)

Can you please clarify if you are currently using an Android device with Cyanogenmod installed on it?

  • I'm not running any custom ROM, no. Everything is stock.

  • I am experiencing the same issues.
    Nexus 7 2013, Wifi
    Android 5.0 LRX21P

  • All stock, as stated in my first comment. I think "lrx21p" is pretty clear. 4 weeks now and I still can't play my 15€ season pass. And all i get is a delayed response and a question I answered in my first comment.

This is a really bad joke.

  • Answered in my very first and last post. Lrx21p. All stock.

Can you please clarify if you are currently using an Android device with Cyanogenmod installed on it?

  • Count me in. Stock Nexus 7 Lollipop. Sound Issues.

  • I would like to add my information. I am also on a Nexus 7 2013 (LRX22C). Freshly imaged, stock. Having the stuttering issues as well with audio and sometimes dialogue cutout completely. I would like to add that I installed the game on my sons Nexus 7 2012 running LRX21P and that has zero issues. Not a hitch at all. So its something with the Nexus 7 2013 specifically. Which is crazy because the 2013 is quite a bit more powerful and yet Im seeing lag/stuttering as well almost like the device is struggling to keep up with rendering the video and thats usually when the audio gets bad.

Can you please clarify if the sound works on your Nexus 7 2013 with a previous OS version? Did the issue start when you updated it to LRX22C?

  • I have a nexus 6. The game has always had a shuddering sound as if the sound is being played much slower than normal. On both lrx210 (5.0) and lrx22c (andriod 5.0.1)

  • Upon further investigating I found that if I turn off playing sound via Bluetooth and delete the game data and play using the handset speakers or through the headphones jack the sound plays normally. If I connect it to broadcast to chromecast or I connect it to wireless headphones the sound slows again.

    Hopefully that will help.

Thank you for the extra information. Unfortunately at this time we do not officially support sound output via Bluetooth speakers/Bluetooth headphones, only through wired headphones/speakers and/or directly through the device's speakers.

  • Great. There is still no solution for the nexus 7 2013... I bought game of thrones as well. And giess what? Same issue. I feel like I'm being ripped off. Check your play store reviews for f. Sake. It is full of this issue.

    Horrible customer support.

  • I am fed up with this now. I'm going to point blogs such as androidpolice to this thread. This joke of a customer support needs more exposure.

You "do not officially support sound output via Bluetooth speakers/Bluetooth headphones" ? oO
..Then MAYBE you should consider stating this on the game description? Just saying.

Never heard of such a thing. On any game from any company.

    Congrats! You made me laugh.

  • For what it's worth, I'm using the built in speakers and seeing the issue. Again, stock everything, no custom roms.

I am getting the same issues (audio and video lag/stuttering to the point its unplayable), Nexus 7 Lollipop 5.0.1 LRX22C (All stock). Issues only started after I updated to 5.0.1. I was halfway through TWDS2 and its killing me not being able to finish it :( All other Telltale games have the same issues. Please fix it soon :( There was an audio fix for GoT released so quickly that worked for other devices, why does the Nexus 7 not get the same?

  • Welcome, same here. I'm using Nexus 7 2013 with Android 5.0.1 LRX22C. The game is unplayable because of the stuttering and buzzing. The sound problems start in main menu. Additionally in-game dialog and animations sometimes are cut. I've completed TWAU ep1 before Android had been updated to 5.0.1 and the game run just fine then. I've checked Walking Dead Season 1 and Season 2 and this problem does not occur. At least for the short time I have played.
I see on this forum that the problem was mentioned before - waiting for some constructive feedback. Kind regards.

  • The stuttering in the walking dead season 2 started after episode one for me.

  • I just downloaded the new GoT update from the play store and the audio worked fine until after the theme song. After the theme song the audio started skipping and it won't stop. I tried restarting and hoped that maybe after some time it would stop but it didn't. The newest update still hasn't fixed the audio or video at all.

  • Over a week since my question, far longer since the issue was first mentioned and still no solution or feedback.

  • I gave up, they wont fix it. its been nearly 3 months now.

My apologies, we are currently looking into the issue. For any inquiries regarding refunds, or refund requests, please contact Google Play Support for further assistance, as they are the distributor of the game for Android devices.

  • I got my refund from Google play this morning.

    This is my last post.

Telltale, this is very disappointing. Your customer and device support is very frustrating, poor and not up to industry standards.
After 3 months a paying customer can expect a resolution for an issue that has been reported multiple times. If you do not have the capacity to support people then don't offer it.
I will not be purchasing anything from this company ever again and I hope others here follow.

  • Sorry your job is so harsh, TelltaleMike. I understand it's difficult to make software work across the highly fragmented Android base, only to have ART dropped on you like a bomb from Google and angry customers pointing the finger at you. I look forward to Telltale games running properly on Lollipop, but understand that it takes time. I hope more fans will be patient.

  • Wow, this is still not fixed...what a shame! I also bought "Tales From The Borderlands" for my Nexus 7 (2013) and it has the exact same problems as "The Wolf Among Us" does. I have Android 5.0.1 on my Nexus 7 (2013), of course.

Also, what does "we are currently looking into the issue" actually mean? Have you identified the problem? Does anyone of you have Nexus 7 (2013) in your office, download the games and test them out. And then tell us, is it a long process to patch this - I mean, come on, it's been ages already. Please make a proper post about it HERE in the forum, and also add the info to the Google Play store, which games are not working properly for Nexus 7 (2013), that's the least you can do.

Also, releasing the next episode of "Tales from the borderlands" without the fix for this problem would be a dealbreaker for me and I wouldn't play or buy any of your games ever again, sorry.

  • I have an Nexus 7 (2013) and my sound issues began last year after I updated to 5.01. Today I've got the 5.02 update and the issue still existst. All other games on my tablet are running smoothly and fine.

  • Same problem here with "Tales From The Borderlands". I have a Nexus 7 (2013) with Android 5.0.2 installed. Please fix this.

  • Same issue here. running stock android 5.0.2 nexus 7 2013
Game sound is lagging and stuttering during the "heavy" scenes. FPS goes to 1fps
To me it looks like an issue with the 3d engine not properly able to use occlusion to filter out non visible areas. The issue is visible a lot in season 2 episode 2 during forrest scenes. It has nothing to do with the sound system.
Probably a nexus 7 video driver issue. This nexus 7 2013 device should easily run these kind of scenes.

  • I have completely the same issue. I've got a stock Nexus 7 running 5.0.2. There's plenty of free memory when things are running.

Season 1 was just about OK but with some buzzing. Season 2 is almost unplayable after episode 1. I've tried switching off and on, turning off wifi completely, clearing the cache.

If there's any kind of extra debugging or diagnosis I could do I'm willing to have a go.

    Any suggestions.

The install is completely fresh (installed yesterday). There's disk space on the device. Even if I shut the tablet down, restart it and run only WD2 then I get the stuttering.

  • I have not tried it on any version before 5.0. But I can confirm, all stock, and the issue happens with 5.0.1, and 5.0.2 as well as 5.0.

Can you please clarify if the sound works on your Nexus 7 2013 with a previous OS version? Did the issue start when you updated it to LRX22C?
