Should The Walking Dead have multiple protagonists?

With Tales From the Borderlands, I was a little nervous at how Telltale was going to handle having multiple protagonists, but after seeing the first episode, I've lost that feeling of nervousness and saw how well it was handled. The game is incredible, and this is coming from a non-Borderlands fan.

So this begs the question, should Telltale continue with this multiple protagonist idea into not only new games, but into older games such as TWD and TWAU (if there's a second season)? In my opinion, NO, ABSOLUTELY NOT. The Walking Dead has worked out well as a single protagonist game, whether that's as Lee or Clem, and they should stick to that in Season 3, whether or not in involves Clem or some new person.

What do you guys think, should The Walking Dead Season 3 have multiple protagonists or stick to having one single protagonist?

  • I haven't played Tales from the Borderlands yet, but multiple protagonists sounds way too puzzley... and adventure games are moving farther and farther away from puzzles. I can't think of any way that multiple protagonists would be beneficial. It would either be distracting (not to mention how annoyed I am at The Walking Dead TV show for constantly having parallel plotlines) or simply unnecessary - it would be much better served by just having a well developped side character.

  • I´d rather not. I´d prefer if TWD/TWAU keeps just Clem/Bigby and leaves the multiple protagonists for TFTB and GOT (any future seasons these might get).

  • In my opinion, no. Let TFTB deal with multiple protagonists.

  • Definitely not.

I could see that, if TWDG had multiple people from the first season still alive. But to add on new characters, and make them protagonists. I wouldn't feel comfortable with that. It'd take away from Clem too much. If they do have a new protagonist(s), they'd have to start over with their story. Which wouldn't be hard, but still. Seems as though I put a lot of effort into MyClem's choices/story, for it to be over would be extremely disappointing.

  • I hope Season 3 and if there is a Season 2 to Wolf, I hope they stay with only one protagonist

It could work. In fact, it could work very well. Though I don't care who the protagonist(s) is/are.

  • i LIKED the way 400 days did it. i think we could have 3-4 protagonists in episode 1 each with their own 30-45 min origin then it could switch to a single new protagonist as the leader of a group where these 3-4 now reside in. then your decisions as them in the short time you played them will reflect their overall personalities. Silent Hill shattered memories did something similar to this except the personalities were all based on psychiatric questions asked to the player

  • Yeah I agree, all that work we put into making our Clementine, just to dump her would be incredibly stupid.

  • This.

  • I'd rather have one protagonist, and Clementine being that protagonist.

  • Yeah, I feel the same way, but I wanted to hear what others thought as well.

  • I don't mind there being more than one playable protagonist. As long as it doesn't jump around too much it'd be cool.

  • i was one of the first to say that maybe WD S3 should have two protagonist. one of them being Clementine. but the biggest factor that help TfBL is the length, more than 1 hour and 30 minutes. they are good writers at TT, but i feel that maybe they been constrained to work on that time length.

  • They did it with 400 Days so possibly. I'm not sure if I'd like it, but I'm open to it. Just as long it flows well.

  • Well I hope they continue with the path of making 2 hour episodes like they did with Borderlands. All the episodes this season were between 1 hour and 30 minutes and 1 hour and 45 minutes. I don't mind this length as much as other people do, but a little over 2 hours wouldn't be bad. What I don't want is a 2 hour 45 minute episode like Long Road Ahead (where most of it is either fixing the train or getting the truck down) or Around Every Corner (complete filler).

  • If the story was like half flashbacks, half real time, I would totally dig it.

  • Yes but 400 Days was only like 15 minutes per character.

  • It still had characters that were interlinked with each other which was very interesting.

  • Yea that could work. :)

  • Yes, but if they were to do that, I wouldn't feel as attached to the characters. I feel attached to characters like Clem and Bigby because they are always the main focus, if they were to divide all the characters after like 15-20 minutes, it would take away from the experience if they were to be constantly jumping back and forth from character to character. TFTBL works out because we spend a good amount of time as either Rhys or Fiona before it switches to the other character.

  • No. Absolutely not. It worked in Tales from The Borderlands but the reason why it works better in TWD is because it's personal. When I was Lee making the decision to let Kenny kill Larry or save his life I felt like I was in Lee's shoes at that given moment. When I was Clementine having to choose to shoot Kenny or let him stab Jane, that felt like it was a personal moment because I knew it might ruin my future with them.

The Walking Dead should focus one solely one protagonist, 400 Days was a nice way to mix things up (since it was a side-story) but even after playing the excellent TFTB's first episode I'd still prefer one player-character in a story such as Lee, Clementine or Bigby. I just feel more personally connected to the character because of it. Which is important when TWD is an emotional roller-coaster. 400 Days was fine with it since all of the characters were brand new and for TFTB it works because for one, it's a lighthearted (somewhat) comedy and it's also presented in a cliché but still entertaining flashback narrative. You really can't do the same thing in The Walking Dead, especially since we'll be entering the Third Season in a year or so.

  • no just clemmy

  • IMO I think you should play as two protagonists in Season 3. The first one being Clementine and the other one being an entirley different character.

  • WHAT multiple prot!??? sounds like resident evil 6 to me...
