Good King Wenceslas

Seen a fair bit of threads pop up around about this Christmas song that Sarita sang when she decorated the tree with Sarah. Sounds like several people have their own interpretation of it. And that bothers me.

So it would have been perfectly safe to assume that the words of the song have no meaning in relation to Telltale's story here, if Sarita had not explained the story of King Wenceslas out loud. Now we know that the song purposefully has meaning for the player/audience. Anyway, Sarita explains how the king's servant followed closely to the king, and that walking in his footsteps kept him warm in the cold weather. The moral was that by doing good to others, we ourselves find blessing. Sarah points out though that the only reason the servant was freezing in the cold in the first place was because he was helping the king - the servant was breaking even at best, and still doing the king's work.

The king is William Carver. Not in theory or in interpretation. He is who is intentionally being criticized here. Throw all of your other little theories about this out the window. It's awesome that Telltale sparked this sort of thought with something so simple and contemplative, but there is one correct and intentional answer to how this song should be interpreted.

The whole reason that Sarah pointed out the flaw in the king's story was to foreshadow to us the flaw in Carver's ideology. Carver believed(as he stated explicitly more than once) that people like him had to make the tough choices and even hurt others, but that ultimately everyone would be better off because of it. He believed he was blessing your group by forcing you back to Howe's Hardware (his own selfish motivations about Rebecca's baby aside). But through the course of two episodes, he causes more death, suffering, and damage to the survival of the human race than even his own misguided ideals could have hoped to counter.

Reggie: "Where else are you going to find food like we have? We've got the canned stuff, and now with the greenhouse coming along we've got fresh food. The building'sis getting more and more secure all the time. Mostly through forced labor, but that's only temporary. They even got the solar panels working...When was the last time you had electricity, huh?"

Sarah: "We just came from a lodge with a wind turbine and--"

Reggie: "It's not a competition."
