I don't intend to cause more controversy but... the first PC game I ever played when I was a little over 7 years old was Monkey Island 2. LeChuck's Revenge.
Of course it was in English and, to make a long story short, it took me about a year (along with Indiana Jones The Fate of Atlantis) to finally beat both games. And how did that happen if I didn't speak any English at all? Well, my dad gave me the best present I could had ever asked for, an English to Spanish dictionary. So not only was it the best learning tool ever created but it actually worked.
I hope you won't cause controversy, because you have just said the most intelligent thing ever.
No irony intended. I wouldn't have learnt English if it weren't for Maniac Mansion.
Respect others, If italians/spanish people feel disappointed and want to complaint, you have to respect their position, at least you will have the game on time, no matter what we're doing or thinking, why annoy others?
I react very strongly against attempts at emotional blackmail, like how you worded your story about running to the shelves and then ending with "But this kind of thing will not happen again because of Telltale...". I think that's rotten. I also think it's rotten when you start threatening and demanding stuff like a whining pessimist.
So, it's the behaviour that bugs me, not the position. I thought it was very clear but you managed to not get it. Bravo.
Look at your signature. That's silly. This is not a revolution dude.
Stop "respecting me" so much, i cant "bear" it
"Sarcasm" doesn't "work" like "that". I've never written I have the slightest respect for you.
I mean lol, you've even added an image of Guybrush surrounded by four flags. My God, can you be more of an emotional wreckage? What about my language? Am I getting punished just because I know better english than you? Not fair Waaaaaah.
The ToMI-budget is much lower than on the other MI-games, therefore there aren't translations right away. It's not that difficult to understand, is it?
You'll just have to be patient then. It's likely that European retail version will be in Italian stores at some point or another.
And reasons, why games are usually published in one language to their main market area and then later localized to other market areas, are often related to time schedule and budget.
Waiting is nothing new, I remember that in the past you had to wait even years before some movie or game was available in Europe. These days you usually at least have alternatives and I'm happy that I get the game at the same day as the Americans.
Ok, but i dont' think that the cost of subtitles is high or need a lot of time for construction.
It's very strange that now they don't work it.
I would like to know if there will be the translate of the voices or not, and many time i must wait also only for the subtitiles!

The five languages of all games MULTILANGUAGE are English-Italian-French-Spanish-Deutsch.

because, as far as i understand, their line of business does not include, normally, the localization. if a game sells well (and they think that it can sell even more if localized) then they can start to plan the localization. otherwise they will not.
From my point of view, since we're talking about MI, localization should have been planned right from the start. but i'm not telltale and we cannot judge them just because they made a different choice. We can post our complaints but always respecting the others.
There isn't nothing strange. they just made a choice. TT has other things to think about right now. They can't insert the localization task in the development process now, when there are just 5 (30 or whatever) days left!
i'm a really Big Fan von MI, and have played all Parts very often.
I thought that a new Monkey Island after Part 4 will never become real.
So i'm very happy to see a new Monkey Island game and made a decision.
A German Version (with German Voice) will be great for me, but
i want to support the whole Project, so i Pre-Ordered the game a few minutes
ago. I know it's in English and English is not such a Problem for me, but if
you have played the Parts 3 and 4 with German Voice, so you want to play the new Parts also in German Voice. Maybe from the same Speaker Norman Matt.
Telltale Games! THANK YOU....
I hope that will be more Monkey Island Games in the Future.
Everyone read this post and realize that this man speaks the truth.
This thread really disappoints me, not so much that people want the translations (I'm an American and only know English so I would want the translations too) but that people are actually attacking TellTale. I wish that the game was coming out in every language at once, but it isn't. Luckily, PCs don't have regional restrictions so you can actually play the game when it is released even though it will be in English. I am so grateful that these franchises have be revived by TellTale and it actually gives me hope for the future. However, TellTale is an American company and the way they do business calls for an English release with (hopefully) international translations eventually.
In regards to Emily's post about speaking English on the forum, she makes very good points. Say you were the moderator of a Spanish/Italian/German forum and you didn't know any English and I came on there using massive profanities and intensely insulting other posters on your forum. Chances are at least some of your users would be able to read English and would be incredibly offended. This is what Emily is trying to avoid by asking you to post in English.
I mean lol, you've even added an image of Guybrush surrounded by four flags. My God, can you be more of an emotional wreckage? What about my language? Am I getting punished just because I know better english than you? Not fair Waaaaaah.

oh yes, I lowed the capital letters and i deleted the whole "ignore" part of the signature, so nobody is offended
After all, i really really appreciate that Telltale are making a new Monkey Island despite many people like me want it translated
I would be glad to JOIN the ITALIAN translator group.
I could capture some friends and use them as free workers.
The only problem is that i\ve no idea of how inserting subtitles inside a game!!!
if somebody knows...let's start translating. In one week we should be able to translate an entire chapter.

Why Wallace & Gormit (another TellTale's game) released at day one with subtitles in multilanguage?
And a play sure more important tan that like Monkey Island is only in English at day of the release?

There is official answer, earlier in this thread. I'll quote it:
Thanks for the feedback. We know that Monkey Island has a lot of international fans and we understand that you guys want to be able to play the games in your own language!
At launch, Tales of Monkey Island will be English only, but we may add subtitles later on. (This has been the case for all of our games except for Wallace & Gromit.) We work hard to maintain our monthly release schedules and getting the episodes localized in the initial release timeframe can be very difficult. We want to put out the best product possible for you guys, and rushing to do a translation could result in a dip in quality, which is definitely not what we want!
As Eric mentioned elsewhere, when we have any news about plans to translate the Monkey Island games we will make announcements about this here on the forum, as well as on our blog.
When they know they will tell us what is going on, till then we have to be patient.
OK. Thanks Olaus Petrus. I had read this statement from Emily. Then wait about news and I'm always for the fans that TTG locate soon TOMI! "...mmm ... porcelain."

They were wrong! Monkey Island was a very good tests for estimate the sales of a graphic adventure (ok, the best graphic adventure :P)multilanguage that it is know throughout the world (differently from Wallace & Gormit) .
Emily of the TellTale are you there??? Now i'm writing in english but you dont' answer me equally...
First, I totally understand that there are people who prefer to get the game in their native language.
Here's just my personal opinion:
During the 90ies some games never were translated, you just got the manual in your mother tongue. First, it was hard, but then... never had more fun improving my knowledge of a foreign language.
There was the Kyrandia series. OK, it's not from Telltale or Lucas arts, but what I loved about it was the fact that the voices were in English with the possibility to choose between English, German and French subtitles.
It might be just me, but I want to hear the original voices. Unfortunately, I only own the German version of CMI, so I never heard Dom's voice.
I am curious, and not only that. I want to hear/read the original text. The translation of MI1 and 2 was a good one, but sometimes there are jokes and rhymes you just can't translate properly. There is one of my other favorite games (no, not from Lucas or Telltale), an RPG. I had to spend a lot of money to get the original version. The German voices and translation really sucked.
So for me the perfect game would be in English with English voices and multi-language subtitles.
then waiting for that miss Tomi multilingual released between the months I will buy the secret of monkey island: special edition that I hope this version comes in multiple languages!

When I was schoolboy in late 80's, I bought English-Finnish dictionary so that I could play SSI's RPG game called "Phantasie III: Wrath of Nikademus". My first adventure game was Sierra's "Police Quest: In Pursuit of the Death Angel", which I couldn't have completed without list of important words, like "nightstick", which was published in hint section of Finnish game magazine. Controlling character by typing English sentences really made adventure games hard for a little boy who wasn't fluent in English, compared to that LucasArt's SCUMM was really an improvement and I didn't have problems playing Fate of Atlantis and Monkey 1 & 2.

that was the same for me too (except for the dictionary that was italian-english ) and my first adv was Leisure suit larry I: ITLOTLL) which had a "write-me-what-to-do" style interface (that i really loved... how much time wasted always calling the same phone number for a fresh and tasty bottle of wine!).
but i would say that when you were a kid, everything wasn't that hard to your eyes... now we're blinded by all these modern hellish conveniences we got.
X MAD MARY perhaps precisely because twenty years have passed otherwise why not do it in 16 color or monochrome so just use your imagination! : D
You have a point, that's not exactly what I meant, though.
If you only have the translation and not the original text, you miss a lot, even though sometimes there are additional jokes in the translation.
Some examples from MI2:
SPOILERS!!!
E: There was a girl named Carrie,
Who thought she soon would marry.
She went into town
and flirted around.
She didn't get wed she got buried.
G: Es war ein Pirat aus Jamaica,
der hatte 'ne Balalaika.
Er zupfte die Saiten,
wir konnten's nicht leiden,
jetzt spielt er unter der Erde weita.
(A pirate from Jamaica
owned a balalaika.
The strings he plucked
to our misfortune.
Now he's playing underground.)
E: Some of us tried pirating on land, but it just didn't feel right.
G: Manche von uns versuchten Software-Piraterie, aber das brachte nichts.
(Some of us tried software piracy but that lead to nothing.)
E: It's impolite to stare at a woman's chest.
G: Ob sie darin wohl unser besonderes Spielzeug aufbewahrt?
(I wonder if she's keeping our special toys in there.)
First, I totally understand that there are people who prefer to get the game in their native language.

That's true 20 years ago!
Now there are many smaller software house that made games with the full translate, like The Black Mirror, Secret Files, Simon The Sorcer, The Moment of Silence...THIS IS THE NEW STANDARD!
I think thath the 99% (you are the 1% percent ) of the gamers prefer to play a games full translated in their language, because so they mustn't lose parts of game while read the subtitles, and this is a reason of the better sale of a product...
Why the TellTale doesn't made this investment?
They could release the game with the subtitles traslated at least! It was the minimum...
Now there are many smaller software house that made games with the full translate, like The Black Mirror, Secret Files, Simon The Sorcer, The Moment of Silence...THIS IS THE NEW STANDARD!
For some context, of that list, the delay between original language release & localizations:
- The Black Mirror: 8 months to a year depending on the particular localization.
- Simon The Sorcerer: A complete year between the german and english/french release. Fifth one should be released soon, three months and counting.
- The Moment of Silence: 1 month delay between german and english (UK).
I'm all in for subtitling games, but translating full voice-overs? No thanks.
In Europe we always get screwed with release dates of games, this is partially because of the translations.
Here in the Netherlands we learn alot of other languages on school: German, French and English, so we're pretty good with communication.
When I meet people online who are from Germany or France, it always amazes me how hard they suck at English, all thanks to those stupid translations.
Every show/movie/game in their country is fully translated into their own language, while here in the Netherlands everything stays in the original (except for the children shows)
(It's not really their fault, since they are "forced" to play/watch everything in their language)
But I think everybody should at least be able to understand/write/speak some English since it's the #1 language.
(Don't start about Chinese or Spanish. English is the main language of the world and you know it)
I'm glad I grew up in the time where games weren't translated yet, learned alot from it.
Can't imagine how ashamed I would feel to play games in Dutch because English is too tough...
(I set all my games/consoles to English, it all seems so childish when it's in my motherlanguage)
And like Mad Mary said, especially play-on-words jokes and rhymes don't work well with translations...
I remember they translated the rhyme episode of "Johnny Bravo" into Dutch.....Oh, the horror
I tried downloaded from TTG "Sam & Max 104: Abe Lincoln must die!" which is free. I read somewhere that the season1 was in Italian, I am curious to see this famous translation ENG-ITA. Of course it is completely in English and I do not understand it in ITA.
But the last straw is that my friend with the XBox online have downloaded the demo of the same incident and is in ITALIAN! ... the demo! Mysteries of life! However, these differences begin to be felt between the PC and console and tell you that we should not complain?
(I set all my games/consoles to English, it all seems so childish when it's in my motherlanguage)
Heh, I feel the same.
Actually, most Dutch gamers I talk to seem to too. That's probably because the Netherlands is too small a country, so most foreign things aren't translated to a little-used language like Dutch, so we had to adapt.
And now we don't know any better
For some context, of that list, the delay between original language release & localizations:
- The Black Mirror: 8 months to a year depending on the particular localization.
- Simon The Sorcerer: A complete year between the german and english/french release. Fifth one should be released soon, three months and counting.

Yes, for those example we waited for a full translation of the games, but the TellTale will not translate the voices of Monkey Island, and a wait like that would be unjustified only for the subtitles! They must introduce the subtitles immediately...
I do not think that is an hard work (like that they did for Wallace & Gormit)!
I do not think that is an hard work (like that they did for Wallace & Gormit)!
I'm not intending to add any more to the argument, but I'd just like to repeat it's a lot harder than one might think to actually create a good translation of something, especially something that might use a lot of idioms and word play like the comedy in Monkey Island often does.
Secondly, it's not just translating into one language. If Telltale were to release a multilingual edition it would have to be for all 5 standard multi-languages in U.S. PC releases (English, Spanish, French, German, Italian) simultaneously.
So just saying it doesn't take that long to translate into German is ignoring a large part of the process.
I'm all in for subtitling games, but translating full voice-overs? No thanks.
I'm glad I grew up in the time where games weren't translated yet, learned alot from it.
(I set all my games/consoles to English, it all seems so childish when it's in my motherlanguage)
This is exactly how I feel. I live in Spain (though I'm not Spanish) and most of the games here, if not all, are translated and dubbed into Spanish which I tend to avoid completely and go for the English releases. It's just the best way to always polish my language skills while having fun, besides there's so many things lost in translation that it's not worth it.

If you only have the translation and not the original text, you miss a lot, even though sometimes there are additional jokes in the translation.
Some examples from MI2:
SPOILERS!!!
But the last straw is that my friend with the XBox online have downloaded the demo of the same incident and is in ITALIAN! ... the demo! Mysteries of life! However, these differences begin to be felt between the PC and console and tell you that we should not complain?
ps.
"my name is Guybrush Threepwood and i want to become a fearsome pirate translator of graphic adventures"
Actually, most Dutch gamers I talk to seem to too. That's probably because the Netherlands is too small a country, so most foreign things aren't translated to a little-used language like Dutch, so we had to adapt.
And now we don't know any better
I think you should wait a little more than 3 minutes, they are not checking every thread every moment 24 hours a day.
But how old are you? I never said that was just a quick question that is open go to read the post before saying that a person in a hurry!
