Murray and Stan are overrated!

What's with everyone's infatuation with these two characters? There are countless other characters I'd rather see return in TOMI than either of them.

I agree Stan is not that cool, but HOW CAN YOU NOT LIKE MURRAY?
  • edited June 2009
Agreed. It would be better to introduce more characters than fit in as many returnees as possible for the sake of posterity.

I wouldn't mind Murray returning but only if:

    - He has an important role to play in the game rather than a background cameo you can choose to avoid.
    - The graphic artists don't just resort to a sphere on a spike. Make him have eye expressions like Manny Calavera.
    - Denny Delk does the voice. Having said that though I have every confidence the guys will find equally comparable voice talent to Delk if they have someone else playing him.

Murray was a funny side-charater for comic releif but I wouldn't mind if he didn't show up again. Stan, on the other hand, has been there since the very first game and he's actually an important character every time. Meeting him and interacting with him was necessary to complete the game. And honestly, he's funnier than Murray.

    Hi Brandon. It's James here.

    James who?

Stan is actually one of the most annoying characters in this game. Where is the Cabana Boy? Hopefully he is guarding the beach in Tales of MI

    "Ohhhh Cabannna Boy"

"That oil is solely for the fry station technician"

"That beach is for members only"

"Those towels are for members of the beach club only"

How can you beat this guy ? ......You cant!

    OP fails - sorry.

agree about Stan. Never got the big deal about him. I think Murray is okay, but he is like Yoda on star wars - have very few scenes overall, showed up fairly late in the saga, and people are crazy about him for no apparent reason. hmph.

Check the polls in my signature, you'll see that not too many people are going to agree with your intial post . Stan and Murray are rated above Eliane Marley -totally insane ! They should get Billy Mayes (Sham Wow) to do the voice of Stan . That would be the first time I thought Stan was funny. The funniest Stan moment for me was when you nailed the smuck in a coffin in Monkey Island Two . Monkey Island Three played off of the coffin joke well . Where was I ? Oh right, Stan was never too comical for me but he definitely is a rememberable character for me.

Murray was great in CMI, but after that, his role was pretty much played out. Stan, on the other hand, is freakin' awesome! How can you not like that guy, flailing his arms about and trying to sell you everything you've never wanted?
  • edited June 2009
They're both extremely unlikely, for one thing. Murrey, while he might not be the only evil undead figure in the game, is completely harmless and therefore his aspirations of world domination just become funny. Did you see him working as a bouncer in MI4? GENIOUS!

Stan, while a far more plausible character, is a parody of cliché high pressure salesmen. Coupled with high hyperactivity and his outrageous demands for items that a pirate may be unlikely to consider buying (aside from used ships) to begin with... To be honest I don't know what's funny about him, specifically, but rest assured the rest of us do. Don't rain on our parade!

UH? more like the complete opposite of what you just sed! Stan and Murray were only cool up until CMI... in EMI murray and stan were forced in and Stan had a stupid voice... bring back Pat Pinney!

Murray is awesome... Stan is cool, but after four games they need new jokes sharpish. MI2 was the peak with the used coffins, MI4 was kind of lazy.

    blasphemy!!

Murray wasn't even in SMI or MI2. His debut was in CMI.

everyone in this forum has played all 4 games, shit like this goes without saying!!
  • edited June 2009
Then why did you say Murray was only cool up until CMI???
  • murray was hanging around on the ghost ship in MI1 anyway, just went uncredited
  • edited June 2009
What? Is that something that was mentioned in CMI and/or EMI? If so I must have missed it...

But it still stands...how can one think Murray was cool in SMI and MI2 if he wasn't even credited?

Murray is my second favorite character in all things, right behind Marvin the Paranoid Android. ("I've got the brain the size of a planet, and all they want me to do is escort you up from the cargo hold")
  • edited June 2009
Murray is funny and all but I would be more disappointed if Stan was missing from Tales. He has been in every game so far and it wouldn't Monkey Island if was wasn't in at least 1 episode. To me he's just as important as Guybrush, LeChuck, Elaine, and the Voodoo Lady. With out them it would not be Monkey Island. PERIOD!

I like to believe that too
  • edited June 2009
Maybe Murray was in the ghost crew band? Or doing a piss-poor job of guarding Elaine?

Stan…I don't know. I've always found him the same way I find all persistent, gabby salesmen - annoying as all hell. But he is a necessary annoyance and it just wouldn't be the same without that mosquito in your ear trying to sell used crap you inevitably need to get anywhere in the adventure.

    No disrespect, but Stan=The Man
  • edited June 2009
Stan is def a man you wanna hurt. Not many moments in gaming have been so rewarding as when I nailed that coffin.

    Murray is relaxing.
  • edited June 2009
Murray can't have been in SMI, since the SMI pirates were ghosts, and Murray was a skeleton. The CMI pirates became skeletons only after having been through the lava at LeChuck's carnival - before that, they were pirates of flesh and blood, not ghosts.

    +1

I allways thought that Murray joined LeChuck's crew before CMI.

I want that both of them will come back, but if I could chose one of them then I would stick to Stan, because he was here from the start, even though his part in EMI was terrible.

Dudes. Murray is A POWERFULL DEMONIC FORCE! My e-mail adress is made to reflect that, and to this day people are intimidated by it...if only they KNEW! LOL

OP doesn't really understand Monkey Island, it's like calling every other character as overrated. All these minor details like Murray adds up to the fun factor that makes monkey island most fun game to play.
  • edited June 2009
Maybe they should make a new character.

I think his point are that there are worse things in the world than not including Murray and Stan everywhere. They're cool and all but it seemed like in EMI they were only included as fan service, rather than for good story reasons.

I'd rather not see at all them than only see them in a fan-pleasing cameo, unless it was the best fan pleasing cameo in the world.

Stan isn't all that great, really, he's funny but...People you want to see back more than Murray? WHO? The only thing cooler than Murray is GUYBRUSH!

Maybe they should make a new character.

    This.

I want Stan back more than Murray as Stan has been a complete constant (and is like the fifth main character). Murray has been a half-constant just like the Men of Low Moral Fiber, and Wally has been a constant in appearance and by the mention of his name.

But every GOOD Monkey Island game was able to introduce new memorable characters that everyone grew to love deeply. And I'm sure Telltale will be bringing many interesting and memorable ones to the fold this time around as well. And don't let even the first episode be the main indication. Sometimes the most memorable characters weren't met until the last half of the game. I can't wait to see what they'll come up with.
  • edited June 2009
I always love those characters who try to look and sound evil but deep down they're really nice people, and that's how I see Murray.

I felt a little bit sorry for him when Guybrush turned Murray down for the anchor. He seemed... sad. So if Murray wasn't in TOMI, I would be dissapointed.

While I love Stan, since he's a really interesting and entertaining character, I do prefer having Murray instead of him on TOMI. Though both would be best.
  • edited July 2009
I don't have a problem with either character both are great and memorable and have their own unique sense of humour when you come across them. I see them as main characters and quite vital ones as well along with Guybrush, Elaine and LeChuck

I can't wait to see what Stan is selling next. He wasn't quite as awesome in MI4 but I have high hopes for this one!
  • edited July 2009
Murray WAS a great character in CMI, sure... Probably one of my favourites as well... But this doesn't mean bringing him back in EMI was a good idea. Sure, i chuckled when i recgnised him sittin on his stool, but then... He was useless and not even funny. I'm all for seeing cool characters again but not if it doesn't make sense to do so.

As for Stan.. It's a bit weird, i think he got worse and worse by every episode... The basic idea of having him in all games selling you different crap each time is a good one (kind of what telltale did with bosco in the same and max games, although it grew old faster due to the higher number of episodes).
But yeah, stan was just GREAT in SMI. Seeing him again in LeChuck's revenge was cool, and the coffin joke was gold. Then... Having him step out of the coffin in CMI sure was awesome, but the charcacter started to get boring after that (i dont know why, but somehow i never liked the fact he was selling life insurances, yeah i get the joke, i just don't think it's fun). And finally in EMI, he was just annoying and lousy (i don't even remember what he was selling then but it was something lame).
So reusing him again ? Why not, but it has to be really well done.

All this to say that even if i don't really agree with the first post, i'll join the team who basically doesn't want them back.
