After the main group found the prison Andrea, Tyreese, and Rick lock themselves in the outer fence of the prison to clear out the zombies. At first they manage to clear it using only their melee weapons, however, more zombies come out of the prison and they need to defend themselves using their firearms. Back in the RV Chris and Julie are babysitting Carl, Sophia, Billy, and Ben. when Sophia and Carl playing cards, Sophia asks Carl if he would be her boyfriend, to which he says no and that girls are gross. That night, Sophia complains she's still hungry, but they don't have any food left. The group is divided, Rick and Tyreese will clear the prison while Lori, Andrea, and Allen clear the bodies and Dale will cover them. When Tyreese and Rick bust open the cafeteria door they meet 4 prisoners, Dexter, Andrew, Axel, and Thomas. They bring the rest of the group inside the cafeteria where they eat for the first time in quite a while.
The group opens the door to the gym. They see its full of zombies, but, they decide to "deal with it later". Then they go to the laundry room and find some vehicles in the garage. Rick proposes bringing the Greene Family to live with them. Rick and Dale head to the farm in the RV. Rick learns that the zombie attacks have increased since they left. Rick makes his offer to bring to the prison, and Hershel agrees to this. The group leaves for the prison, except for Otis who stayed behind to watch over the farm.
The following night, Chris and Julie are having sex, then commit to shooting each other in a suicide pact. After hearing a gunshot, Rick runs to find Tyreese hugging his dead daughter's body and Chris exclaiming that they were supposed to kill each other at the same time. Julie then suddenly turns and attempts to bite Tyreese. Rick is not able to get a clean shot, so Chris shoots her. Tyreese, in a fit of rage, then chokes Chris to death and then continues to beat the reanimated corpse of Chris. The next day, while discussing it, they realize that they don't need to be bitten for them to turn. Rick returns to the Atlanta Camp to kill the reanimated Shane. Glenn and Maggie find the barbershop in the prison where they have sex and cut their hair. Tyreese,Glenn,Andrea and Billy head to the Jim to clear it, however Tyreese attacks the zombies suicdally who then begin to swarm Tyreese, forcing Glenn,Andrea and Billy to leave him. Maggie finds Hershel huddled over in tears and finds Susie Greene and Rachel Greene decapitated. Dexter is suspected of being the murderer and is locked away in his cell.
When Rick comes back and hears the news about the Greene family and Tyreese, he demands to go to the gym, where they find Tyreese sitting on the floor after killing all of the zombies. While Andrea is in the laundry room, she is attacked by Thomas, who is revealed to be the real murderer of Rachel and Susie. Carl and Sophia are talking about Allen, then Carl tells Sophia how he wants to be her boyfriend. Sophia then kisses Carl and he backs off. Andrea then runs out of the prison, away from Thomas, and into the yard, where Rick saves Andrea and beats Thomas to the point where he breaks his own hand. After all the chaos, Rick introduces the new rule, "You kill. You die".
After an argument about the new rule, Rick declares that they will hang Thomas. Glenn and Tyreese, who were watching Thomas, decide to lock him in the freezer that the inmates had previously been using as a bathroom, in order to "Put the waste with the waste" as Glenn explains. Rick reminds them that the freezer is air tight so he will suffocate, and they remove him to be taken to the cell block. Later, Patricia frees Thomas, believing him to be just a sick man that needs help, but he then attempts to kill her. Glenn and Maggie approach from behind, and Maggie unloads six rounds from her pistol into Thomas's back. Maggie confesses to the gathered survivors, "Now I feel a little better", and the survivors proceed to the main gate of the prison. Hershel requests that Thomas' body be thrown to the zombies to be torn apart and eaten. The issue closes with Rick being disarmed and threatened by Dexter, Andrew, and Patricia at gunpoint. Dexter then tells Rick's group of survivors to leave the prison.
Michonne, standing in a field, dragging behind her two shackled, armless, jawless zombies, Mike and Terry. She eventually takes out her sword and begins chopping off zombie heads. Otis, riding nearby, is shooting zombies on his way to the prison. at the prison, zombies begin charging out of the A-Block doors, causing a massive shootout to begin. During the shootout, Dexter is shot in the head by Rick, but, was noticed by Tyreese. Otis is trapped because no one is there to open the gates for him, and Michonne comes to his rescue, helping Otis kill the zombies outside the prison fence. After the battle is resolved, the survivors begin dragging the zombies outside the prison walls where they meet up with Otis and Michonne. Rick allows Michonne inside the prison on the grounds that she give up her weapons and kill the two zombies she has with her. She does so and is allowed in. As they are talking, Andrew runs away into the wilderness, and no one goes after him. At night, Tyreese meets up with Rick, who is standing by himself on a walkway. He talks about the killing of Dexter and that Rick went against his own law of "you kill, you die." Rick simply acknowledges this fact, possibly thinking about a new rule.
Andrea holds a meeting for the survivors in the cafeteria, giving them all brand new orange jumpsuits she found in the prison. She promises to sew some new clothes for everyone for the future seasons, possibly even making shorts for everyone in the summer. Otis notices Patricia alone. They have a short conversation and Otis horribly tells Patricia that he is not talking to her, like the rest of the group. As he says she sided against them with a couple of niggers (Dexter and Andrew). Otis then leaves her alone again. Later, Tyreese and Carol are in the gym when Michonne comes in to lift weights. Michonne recognizes Tyreese as a football player, and they begin talking, making Carol visibly upset. Rick, Tyreese, Dale, Allen, and Axel all go into A-Block, hoping to clear out the remaining zombies that they didn't kill in the shootout. After finding a library, the group splits up. Rick, Axel and Allen go one way, and while Allen is taking a break to catch his breath, he is bitten on the ankle by a lurker. He shoots it, and Rick and Axel simply stare on. The other group, Tyreese and Dale, hear the scream and gunshot, but they figure it is taken care of and do not go investigating. They open a door to find an enormous generator. Allen is lifted out of the prison block by Rick, Tyreese, Dale, and Axel. Despite protests from the other survivors, Rick cuts Allen's foot off to save him from infection. Carol is upset over the news of Allen's injury, and wants support from Tyreese. She proceeds to the gym, and through the gym's window, she sees Michonne giving Tyreese oral sex.
Later in the prison, Andrea observes Michonne talking in her cell to an imaginary person. Andrea confronts Michonne about this but Michonne says that she doesn't know what Andrea's talking about. Maggie and Glenn meet up with Hershel who is waiting in their cell. Hershel informs them of the news about Allen, and later gives Maggie permission to be in a relationship with Glenn. While farming outside, Axel speaks of his displeasure towards the zombies. He feels bad for them because they were once everyday people, just like the ones inside the prison. Rather than fighting with him, Hershel partakes in conversation with him, developing a friendship. Upset over seeing Michonne pleasure Tyreese, Carol kicks him out of their shared cell. Upset, she turns to Rick for comfort. The next day, Rick asks Lori to talk to Carol to help her feel better, but, upon arriving at her cell, they find her lying on the bed with her wrists slit, as Sophia sits in the corner, horrified by what she witnessed her mother do. Rick takes Tyreese aside and accuses him of being responsible for Carol's attempted suicide. Tyreese punches Rick and tells him not to say that again. Instead of backing down, Rick says Tyreese practically slit Carol's wrists for her. Tyreese kicks Rick, but, then breaks down in tears. Glenn and Maggie appear on the scene as Rick asks if Tyreese feels ashamed to be a murderer. Glenn steps in and tries to calm the pair. Tyreese says he feels no shame over killing Chris for killing his daughter and counters by recalling Rick's own murder of Dexter.
Tyreese then brings up Rick's mutilation of Allen. Pushing Tyreese against the balcony railing, Rick says he only mutilated Allen to save his life. Tyreese punches Rick again and asks if Rick means to kill him, too. Rick maintains that he is not a killer, but, Tyreese tells him he's acting like one.
Suddenly, Rick passes out and tumbles over the railing to the cellblock floor below, and Tyreese sustains a foot injury jumping down after him. Glenn and Maggie tell the men to stop fighting, but, Tyreese already has and just wants to see if Rick is okay. Rick wakes up and kicks Tyreese in the face, yelling that Tyreese called him a killer, but, then turned around and tried to kill him by pushing him over the rail. Tyreese explains that Rick simply blacked out and fell, but, Rick refuses to believe him. Rick tells Tyreese to stay down because they're not done yet. Lori comes running down the stairs, and Glenn fills her in on what has transpired. Sitting, Rick declares to Tyreese that everything he does is intended for the good of the group. Andrea comes downstairs and tells them Allen has died. Rick says he'll handle the task of shooting Allen to keep the dead man from returning as a zombie and sarcastically asks if Tyreese thinks he'd enjoy that too much. Hershel and Michonne come to Allen's room to tell Rick that Carol will recover from her self-inflicted injuries.
Rick finally reawakens after 26 hours of being unconscious. Carol, who is sitting beside his bed, asks if he's waking up. Rick, unsure of his current state, believes he is, and asks how Carol herself is doing. Suddenly, Carol kisses Rick. Rick is shocked by Carol's action and questions her why she kissed him. She tells him that she had heard how he stood up for her with Tyreese and that it meant a lot to her. Carol then assures Rick that she won't tell Lori about the kiss. Rick informs Carol that he will tell Lori about it, and that he values Carol as a friend, nothing more. Carol then leaves to go retrieve Sophia from Andrea and Dale, who had been watching after her for Carol. After Rick finally gets up, Dale lets him know that they've all decided that the pressure is getting to him and that he can't be their leader anymore, and that they formed a committee. Carol goes to inform Carl that Rick has woken up, and asks him if he was worried. "Nope. My dad's real tough. I wasn't worried at all." Carl says to Carol. Out in the courtyard, everybody thinks Rick is crazy, an idea he almost agrees with. He walks out to the garden and delivers a speech to them “The second we put a bullet in the head of one of those undead monsters -- the moment one of us drove a hammer into one of their faces -- or cut a head off. We became what we are! And that's just it. THAT's what it comes down to. You people don't know what we are. We're surrounded by the DEAD. We're among them -- and when we finally give up we become them! We're living on borrowed time here. Every minute of our life is a minute we steal from them! You see them out there. You KNOW that when we die -- we become them. You think we hide behind walls to protect us from the walking dead? Don't you get it? We ARE the walking dead! WE are the walking dead"
