but yet again, isn't the novel Road to Wood bury cannoned to the Comics? But they just recently added Tara into the show, who came from that novel. So, are the Novels cannoned to the comics?
Kevin Bruner (Telltale's co-founder, and current CEO) confirmed that their games based on The Walking Dead aren't canon in a post on these f… moreorums: "My canon comment was supposed to be about The Wolf Among Us (which IS canon in the Fables universe), not The Walking Dead, which is obviously NOT canon."
The game is set in the same universe, but unlike The Wolf Among Us, it is not canon with the comics. So, Robert Kirkman is free to do what he wants without worrying about Telltale's stories. Also, technically, because it's not canon, it can work the other way around as well, since Dan Connors (Telltale's co-founder and currently a member of the board of directors) did suggest that it was possible to have Telltale's characters meet the characters from the TV show.
Yeah they can't do big things like that because the universe, the setting, is the same as the comics and the tv shows but they could do small things. By the game's cannon Rick could have died in the coma, the governor could be a good guy, Carl could be a girl.
It is canon though, in the sense they can't do anything major like find a cure or state the cause of the outbreak because that stuff doesn't happen in the comics.

based on The Walking Dead aren't canon in a post on these forums:
To be honest I've seen that once in that thread which , and even then people were a bit confused every other time its just been said to be in the same universe, Can anyone find the actual comment the creators made? Perhaps they just meant they dont follow the same characters as the show or barely interact with them
I thought the whole idea was that it was the same universe? Though even if it isnt i cant imagine them changing the whole world
In fact I read the whole thread, I think the comment he makes is in response to people asking if it was canon to the comics and show as that was what was originally thought and again the idea that the characters would be involved with those characters plot. So in my opinion it is canon and likely always will be, or at the very least they are writing as if it was canon. The comment even mostly appears to be mostly that he was talking about the wolf among us in many comments. One post on the forum when it has been said multiple times its set in same universe and aims to be canon

Look the games are just like the show. The show can't do big changes like introducing a cure or doing a big time skip, but they have a different continuity than the comics. Things are different. Some people are dead in the comic but not in the show. Some people are dead in the show but not in the comics. Both the show and the comics are part of The Walking Dead Universe but they have different continuity. The games are the exact same way.

Actually, no. The show can do all of those things because it exists in its own universe, whereas the game can't because it takes place in the comic's universe, just away from the events we see in the comics.

Who's making up all these arbitrary rules? That's my job.
In December, Disney will release Episode VII of the Star Wars franchise. This will be Disney Continuity of the Star Wars Universe. There have been many novels that take place after Star Wars Episode VI. That is called the Expanded Universe Continuity of the Star Wars Universe. Your misunderstanding the nomenclature. Both of y'all are thinking of the word universe in a scientific multiverse theory kind of universe. When really, in this instance, the word universe is meant more to describe a setting. The Walking Dead universe is a place where a zombie apocalypse has occurred and anyone who dies becomes a zombie. The Star Wars Universe is a place where people use starships, lightsabers, and the force.

1) This is the comic universe, also taking place here at the same time are the novels and the Telltale game (both seasons + 400 Days).
2) This is the show universe, also taking place here is the spin-off show and mobile related video games such as Dead Reckoning.
Basically, it is a small, tiny multiverse, not universe, as that would imply that the show, comic and game all take place in the same continuity... which they of course don't.
Really not that difficult to grasp. I would love to see your reaction to the DC or Marvel multiverses, though, because they are legitimately more confusing than astrophysics.

I'm on the fence about Tara. I mean, her character's likeable, often adds some comic relief...there is just something about her that irks me. I dunno, I guess I feel like despite the good things, her character is still very bland
The thing I don't get is why is she skinny and lesbian? In the novel she is described as being overweight and I believe straight. Though, I don't mind it ,but thy somewhat dramatically changed the character.

As stated above, Telltale's co-founder and current CEO Kevin Bruner stated that the games are set in the same universe, but they are not actually canon with the comic. So, Telltale's game can have Michonne, showing what happens to Michonne in the time frame she's missing from the comic, but if Robert Kirkman later wants to show the same time period with Michonne in a comic or novel, he doesn't have to worry about going by Telltale's story, as Telltale's stories aren't canon with the comic (which is most likely the main reason why Telltale's games aren't canon to the comic (especially given the situation that happened with Lilly, when Robert Kirkman decided he wanted to do backstory on her as well), as having them set as non-canon gives Robert Kirkman the freedom to do what he wants with the characters without worrying about the events of Telltale's games).
Well everyone, We've had a lot of laughs on this thread. A lot of eloquent speeches and interesting discussion but sadly it appears that I was in error. According to the new Michonne DLC it is in continuity with the comics. Do not let be said that I cannot admit when I was wrong.

The comment that I linked was actually a correction of that reddit AMA, as it was confirmed in that thread (which was about that reddit AMA) that the canon comment in that was a mistake. "My canon comment was supposed to be about The Wolf Among Us (which IS canon in the Fables universe), not The Walking Dead, which is obviously NOT canon"
Dan Connors words from some AMA about a year ago:
Well the game will be in canon and we are always looking for ways to connect to the Comic and Show but haven't found the right fit yet.

Yeah, I think game is canon with the comics in some way. When Telltale started with Season 1 and we received episode 1 then everyone was asking Robert Kirkman about Hershel and Glenn, are they the guys from the comics or TV show etc.. He said that they're characters from the comics and in this game we can actualy witness part of their story before we met them in the comics. That meant (at least for me, maybe I'm wrong) that events in game happened in the comics universe and vice versa.

I think it actually may have been Kevin that got mixed up on that. Dan did indeed make a comment implying that the games were canon to the comics, but I'm guessing he meant that as in the games used the comics as the source material.
The Wolf Among Us doesn't have any Show, so how can they conect it with the comics and the game? It makes no sense, he is totally talking about TWD.
I have searched and i have yet to see Kevin saying that, care to screenshot it or link it, please?
Since Kevin's post about The Walking Dead game not being canon was a correction of that very AMA, it's apparent Dan used the wrong terminology. He probably meant to say in universe, rather than in canon, in the quote that you posted.

No... that's not true at all
Every Telltale Games Interview says its Canon.
The novels are canon to the comics
Link?
Huh... That's the first time someone on the internet called me a troll. Should I be proud?
Why do you say that?

hell if I know...maybe b/c with characters like Tara, there's more creative freedom to take regarding the direction of the character
Yet again, I like the character. She's so energetic and optimistic
