I'm not really sure if this was meant as a reference to the movie, but at the beginning, Elaine tells LeChuck "I'm just not that into you".
It made me think of the movie He's Just Not That Into You :)

I believe she says that in the intro of CMI also

And as for the ultimate insult being on the sword. I can quite clearly see it as the handle so I'm not sure why you lot can't XD

In Monkey 3 Guybrush says to Murray: "You'd look great with a melting candle sticking out of your head", then in this game in the voodoo lady's cabin he spots the skull with the candle and says "Murray??"

Didn't anyone see the reference to guy.brush? (the character's filename was named that when they made the 1st game). And wasn't there a rubber chicken with a pulley in the middle in TMI as well?

One of the action figures D'oro is playing with has the same appearance as the little Krepke doll at the end of MI2.

I'm not 100% sure, but I think there was a subtle DOTT reference in there.

In the Voodoo ladies house, as you examine the freezer, guybrush mentions a bunch of animals in there.

You have to freeze the hamster in DOTT.

At any rate, I thought DOTT as soon as I saw it!

I thought "Bosko" when I saw it, as it's one of Bosko's freezers from Sam & Max.

The Keelhauler Gazette newsletter e-mail I just got from Telltale says that Flotsam Island has endured 1,138 days of unwelcome winds.

    As in 1138.

    As in THX 1138.

'I don't have the education, jacket and fedora to read these'

I forgot what Guybrush said, but I think that's what the gist of what he said when you examine the pillars by the docks the second time.

I noticed in the beginning scene Guybrush drawing everyone's attention to his wedding ring. Reference to the speculation that he isn't married due to him having no wedding ring in early screenshots? Anyway made me smile :D

Possibly, but it is meant to be a voodoo doll to look like LeChuck. He may have used that puppet to make the voodoo doll but did that thing have legs?

I don't know... Doesn't it look more like a diamond ring? There was a "midas diamond" in the recipe wasn't there?

Look right above the diamond ring. The part that Guybrus is holding is part of the Ultimate Insult.

Ummm...guys? I'm seriously wondering if nobody noticed this!
Smiling Stan's Bombs? Ring a bell? :D It really made me laugh!
I can picture him right now:
"Howdy, Son! Welcome to Smilin' Stan's new Store! We've got an offer today. It's DA BOMB!"

When Guybrush taunts the Marquis about opening the gate and says he's going back there now......and then walks away muttering about how he needs to find a diamond, (something else that I forget), and a rudimentary lathe........

    :D

"I know! You construct a weapon. Look around, can you form some sort of rudimentary lathe?"

    "Die luf der flotsam saugen"
(bad German for "the winds of Flotsam suck")

Pretty sure this is a riff on Stanford's motto, "Die Luft der Freiheit weht" ("the winds of freedom blow"). It's a pretty weird motto for an American university.

Mike Stemmle is a Stanford grad, used to write routines for the Band.

There's a whole thread with German speakers picking this apart (e.g. "luft" means "air" not "wind").

May not be a reference, but it sure seems like the Voodoo Lady and Coronado (I think that's his name) relationship is similar to how Calypso and Davy Jones' relationship was in POTC. At least that might be revealed in a future episode.
  • edited July 2009
I doubt this is an actual reference, but when the Marquis was talking about amputating Guybrush's hand, he asked if that was a bit rash. That part immediately made me think of the scene in Curse when Rottingham gets his hair "amputated" and Guybrush tells them not to be rash.

Ahh, yes.. I see it now. Thanks! :)

Also, the machine with all the buttons in the Voodoo Lady's shack. It's been a while since I played EfMI but isn't that the prosthetics machine? I was a little disappointed it didn't actually do anything but maybe that's for a later episode, like that chest?

Yeah, thats what I thought. I can see the voodoo doll, the 'gold man' and the 'bronze hat' from the Ultimate insult, but not the 'silver monkey head'?

I love how the sword is made up of all the stuff that killed Lechuck in the last 4 games =D

I believe the silver head may have been melted to forge the blade of the Cutlass.

I think that this machine is the one you use in the theater of CMI to find Elaine.

    Guybrush's extreme dislike for porcelain!!!

I was thrilled that they referenced this, because it always intrigued me. :)

After a few people mentioning this I went and took a look at the sword in-game, and I seem to be able to place all the ingredients except for the ultimate insult. Well, more specifically, the silver monkey head, the other pieces are there. Anyone care to look into it?

Maybe the sword has the ultimate insult power running through it and is not a piece of the sword but some of its power.:D

He was about to say the ultimate insult, but Elaine cut him off.

All I can think of is:
    Morgan Le Fley
    U-Tube
    Marquis de Singe
Joaquin D'Oro being called Dora the Explorer
    And your little hand too
Rubber chicken with a pulley in the middle... wait... that was the Monkey Island: SE gameplay movie

Did no one see that after wrongly guessing the password for the shack a few times, Guybrush asks if he knows the person who he is talking to. The voice is done by the fella who did Pegnose Pete who had a shack in the Myst'O'Tyme in Escape from Monkey Island. (i could be wrong, but it sure sounded like him and that whole shack from the outside reminded me of it)

Stan's reference was awesome to say the least.

The machine is from curse of monkey island in the voodoo shack, I was hoping a scroll would pop out >_<.

the U tube had me laughing for awhile as well.

I saw that. After knowing the
voodoo lady was in the shack
I thought it was her trying to make her voice sound masculine

Well it's definitely not the prosthetics machine but that was the first thing that popped into my mind when playing... Do you mean the lighting machine in the theatre on Plunder Island? It's more similar to that but it's not the same.
I guess it's not a reference after all but something we'll get to use in a later episode. :)

The bottle of root beer: "I haven't seen one of these since before I had a beard"

    Good stuff.

He had a beard in Monkey Island 2. That statement above might be incorrect.

No no, that's the LeChuck voodoo doll from MI2 (or similar). The sword is made up of all of the LeChuck defeating weapons from the first four games.

Is that a reference to something? I can't quite remember needing a lathe in any Monkey Island games... :(
