I always thought that maybe they could save Kenny in Season 3, how? Well save him by keeping him in Wellington. I had a whole story typed ou… moret on how they would keep Kenny in Wellington (A new family and everything) And have Clem leave. You only get to be with Kenny in 1/5 choices. So to the people that stuck with Kenny to the end should be rewarded. Maybe a survival counter at the end of a season? And if you went with Kenny you unlocked Kenny as a Survivor? Telltale needs to show fans your choices matter. And to me that would show me that my choice mattered.
I don't know if 'rewarded' is the right choice of words here, but I think they every player should, at the very least, have their choice feel worth something. Make it so sticking by Kenny or Jane provides the player with some reinforcement/validation of that choice, so that even if they do end up dying, it felt like it was worth sticking by them in the end.
I felt that Ben accomplished this. Sure, he dies anyways, but I actually felt glad that I saved his life, regardless of his fate. I felt like I got what I wanted out of his character by the end of it, something that made the choice of keeping him alive feel like it was worth making. Can't exactly say the same about a character like Sarah, though. Or Lawrence/Dum in TWAU.

really
If they're both dead, sub in a third new character that will take their place/role instead
That could work, right?
