So how does the hint system work exactly?

I turned it up to 4 to try it out and never get any hints. I was under the impression that you didn't have to press any buttons to get them and that they come when you are stuck. Haven't seen any yet.

They come automatically depending on how long it's been since you last solved a puzzle (I think).
Could be when you're simply walking around somewhere.

It's an intuitive system, when you are around an unsolved puzzle, someone will drop a line that might give you an idea to ponder. (and it's not always Guybrush)

In the previous games, if you are mindlessly clicking about in the wrong areas, then you would get a hint.

I think the hint system is pure brilliance!

    (although I turned it to 0 :D )

I must admit I've never entirely understood how to set the Telltale hints system. It seems to want you to decide in advance generally how stuck you expect to be while playing the game, which isn't really something I know how to answer.

I tend to just leave it at 0 unless I need a hint, when I change it to the highest setting and wait for it to trigger. Presumably this isn't the intended use, though.

Ok, I also want to disable the hint system and get hints when I really want to. Is it possible to manually get hints when you want?

well if you need a hint for a puzzle, and the in game ones are not helping. Then you can also use the hint forum... ask for a "progressive hint"

you should get a few spoiler tagged nugges in the right direction.

No, I mean how to get the in game hints manually? They should assign a hot key like H to that.
