Does anyone else get stuck on puzzles for the wrong reasons...?

For example, I got completely stuck on the very simple ninja action hero puzzle where you had to follow the treasure map.

The problem wasn't figuring out the puzzle logic -- I figured that out right away. The issue was that for some reason my brain couldn't work out what the drawing for the start location was supposed to be, on the treasure map. To me it looked like a dancing house with bongo drums or something... I stared and squinted at it for a good 45 minutes before my brain finally started to interpret what that shape was.

After finally figuring out what it was, I now see <what it's supposed to be> every time I look at it. It's kind of like an M.C. Escher painting where focusing differently will make you see the picture in a completely different way. But it's frustruating to get hung up on a puzzle for a dumb reason like that though.

Anyone else?

I was starting at what I thought might be the X. Not at the well.
I wandered aroung for 20 Minutes without a plan.

I kept inspecting the weather vane (rather than putting it on the idols), Guybrush would pull it out and i could see the symbols for a few secs, worked for the first one but the following idols i was like, wtf, those shapes aren't on there!

I did that on the last idol. Is there another way to solve it? I hear
Marquis De Singe's crys of *ahem* "agony" are another way to find out what's the right combination?

I think it would be weird to stick this thing where the other ones went with him in this position.

I was using xpadder to map my 360 controller and on the idols I could never get the faces to turn right (Whenever it would go to turn them it would always turn them two spaces rather than 1) So at first I assumed there was some trick to spinning the dials (like maybe turning the lower ones allowed you to turn the upper one differently etc) I started to get so frustrated and was looking up hints on the hint forum.

I forget what suddenly made me use the mouse, but when I did.. Uh man was I in hysterics

    I've got another one...:

When following Hemlock's ancient map, one of the symbols on the map is wind. So I noticed that whenever the wind sound effect would play, it would be accompanied by a visual wind animation that would streak accross the screen in a specific direction.

So instead of using the weather vain like I was supposed to, I kept trying to see what direction the wind animations would go towards. And it worked a couple times (probably by sheer luck), which further tricked me into thinking that this was the solution to the puzzle. But then it led me astray a few times and I was all... WTF... I labored under this misconception for about 30 more minutes before it finally occured to me to use the weather vain.

Did it the same way... and I'm curious as well: Can anybody confirm that there's another way?

Aye, I used his sounds and stopped turning the blocks whenever he sounded, um, happier, and it worked.
  • edited July 2009
I solved it by listening to the sounds he made... didn't know you could use the weather vane for this one.
  • edited July 2009
Same... used the Marquis' sounds of "pleasure" vs. pain. It didn't even occur to me to use the weather vain, after I had tried sticking it in the usual location and Guybrush mentined that he didn't think it had the right "slot configuration".

Few a good few minutes I tried to pull the eyes out of the wall at the jail. :p
With the hint of soft cheese throughout the game I tried to use it as lubrication...and then 'Ooooooooh.'

Just wondering, if this happened to anyone, for me there were a few things i tried that didnt result in anything, like when i tried to put the nose potplant in the well in the jungle, guybrush pulls out the plant, then just puts it away, doesnt say anything, also i tried the weather vane on the ???? in the jungle and Guybrush wont do or say anything?

I actually thought of sticking the
    blank cheese wheel
    into the
    idol
first, because it was the same shape. When it didn't do anything I kept wondering how I could get some
    eyes
on it so I wandered back into town, walked past the
    jail
    and saw the
    carvings
again and thought, "It's so obvious now!"

I also loved the little nod to Wallace and Gromit Guybrush does at that bit. :)

The wrong choises gives you a painfull sound, while the right ones gives a more releaved sound.

I thought that I had to find a way to pry the eye carvings from the jail walls. When I figured out it was the cheese, I figured it all out for good.

when i found the weather vane i was trying to find new places by following the wind. I try that for 30 minutes. i was doing cycles but i was sure i would end up somewhere eventually... then i found out what i was supposed to do...

I end up getting stuck on stupid things in between puzzles. Sometimes I just phase out and have no clue what I'm doing.

The game has 360 mapping by default, so you have the mouse button mapped twice, that's why you are getting a double click!

You only need to map the mouse in Xpadder (right stick) and your all set. No idea why they included 360 controls but without the ability to use it for the mouse pointer too.

Plays great with the 360 pad!

I got tripped up on the part where you're supposed to
walk counter-clockwise on the calendar. I thought the arrow on the map meant I was supposed to rotate the calendar.
When I finally figured it out, I felt so dumb!

I got stuck plenty of times, I wasn't listening hints tho so I was looking for some hints on what to do next.

First puzzle where I was misleaded was the first Map quest
when you were supposed to click on the well before following the instructions
. Í mean I did *correctly* follow them at first time, but I didnt click on the well, so I didnt get into the right screen. I ended up searching alternative meaning for a long time. I tried to follow the map backwards and from different locations, but that didnt work :D

Second was the last two idols, since I couldnt figure out how to get the faces to first one, I started looking for some stick to put into the second one, ofcourse no luck until I noticed the paintings (again) in the jail wall. :)
How do you hide the spoiler text?
    [ SPOILER ] [ /SPOILER ] Tags, remove spaces tho.

    That's interesting....I actually had Guybrush
look at the weather vein in his inventory. When he holds it up, you can see two of the faces, and one of them worked in the broken idol thingy.
I don't know if I solved it the right way, but it worked for me.

After finishing three idols and the encounter with the marquis at the fourth, I ended up roaming everywhere for more than an hour, thinking that I missed out on some clickable to form the axle. Was about to give myself a break, when I thought of going back and talk to the marquis again. Silly me.

I actually got stuck on the third idol thing. It took me a while to realize what to do with the cheese, and then it took me even longer to figure out the right combination. With the second one, I literally just started switching things around and found one that looked good, and it worked the first time. I figured as long as I had the right eyes, nothing else mattered, since the nose worked the first time....

That had me stuck for a little while too. While there is a confirmation sound if you get it right, if you never figure out what you're supposed to do first you never heard the sound, and so don't know that you've missed first step.

Still, is that a good thing or a bad thing? It's nice to have a puzzle game that takes you a while to figure things out. It slows you down, and lets you appreciate the game more than if you breeze through it.

    Me too!
I got lucky on the first and wasted lots of times trying vane from different angles.
    Lol.

Well, I got a bit stuck when you have to walk around the calendar.
I always stopped as soon as it became green, thinking I did it. Later I've understood I had to make one more step to "close the circle" and actually solve that part of the puzzle.

It took a long time to me, to find there was something outside the village!
Just because I wasn't able to correctly move the character through the pillars and outside to the jungle...

I was actually disappointed by the calendar. It looked so cool, with symbols and everything and it got its own camera angle. When I realized what I actually had to do, I thought "Oh, this is it?", and checked the map a few times before going into the next room to confirm it.

    Quite same.
When he holds it up, I looked at the two faces you can see and noted I hadn't already used one of them on any of the previous idols, and I used that one.

I breezed through all the puzzles except for one completely silly mistake. I didn't think to examine the socks for the longest time. I rushed straight past them to the underpants, and assumed that the socks were just there for decoration.

This happened to me too. I still think that was the most illogical thing in the game.
