Realistically, how long can Clementine and others survive in the apocalypse?

edited April 2014 in The Walking Dead

The zombie apocalypse sends us back to the stone age. Males go out to hunt and gather while females stay at camp cooking and taking care of the kids.

It's 2 years into the apocalypse and you've become a true survivor BUT there's a new problem. The world has ran out of medicines and most of the doctors have died and are dying. No more vaccines for the newborns. You accidentally cut yourself just a bit jumping a fence? you die from tetanus. Catch a cold? probably dead. Get appendicitis? you die. A random mosquito carries some walker blood then bites you and some of the blood gets in your bloodstream? You're dead. And others.

I got the idea of this thread after recently watching the episode where the prison members get sick after eating the pigs

"You step outside, you risk your life. You take a drink of water, you risk your life. And nowadays you breathe, and you risk your life." - Hershel Greene

R.I.P Hershel.

Now i know the game will never go this realistic because getting sick and dying would make a really crappy story but it's still something that makes me worry about Clem whenever I'm daydreaming about a zombie apocalypse.

What are your thoughts?

  • Clem is immortal and will never die XD. I sometimes find myself daydreaming wondering about similar possibilities, but there will allways be hospitals and chemist's too raid. Just my opinion, i think i heard that the zombies outnumber the humans 5000 to 1 there aren't many humans left so that is a lot of drugs to go around.

Well 1st off, let me just state, the only reason Herschel died was because of the Governor.
If it hadn't been for him, Herschel would probably still be alive.

    2nd.
It's not so much how long you live, but how you've lived.
If one can survive, even if it isn't for long, and still keep there humanity, than that's all that's really important.

  • People don't understand what Darwin said, his "Survival of the Fittest" is more like Survival of Those Who Can Adapt. The strong; they die pretty quickly, but the survivor; the person that can adapt best to the situation of a zombie apocalypse, could survive decades.

How do you adapt to illnesses? I guess it'll get to a point where the people with better genes and better immune systems will survive.

Also, viruses and bacteria are evolving all the time.

  • Aaand... Bump

  • The same way people survived long enough without medicine and special weight loss diets for us to be here now. You adapt as you survive. Your immune system gets stronger and adapts to new diseases. People didn't survive with modern medicine prior to modern times, and contrary to what some might tell you they didn't survive via the grace of god either. People adapt, and life goes on. They'll learn as they go same as we do now, and same as our ancestors have done since the dawn of man.

  • Don't you know your history? God has kept us around for 6000 years. Duh.

  • Doctors can teach what they know to other people.
I think eventually people will just have to deal with it. Maybe it will be like the last of us. There were still communities and such around, just life was different.

  • After degradation of knowledge from doctor to doctor eventually we would be back to voodoo rituals, rain dances, and human sacrifices :p

  • Not sure about human sacrifices, but being back to rain dances would be awesome.

  • Zombies would have all rotted away after about 7 to 10 years id guess so if Clem and the other can survive that long, then they would be fine.

  • We could bring some pizza. No one resists pizza.

Or maybe some brigadeiro - it tastes like heaven.

  • The human immune system has evolved considerably, and in a country like the US it would take more than a few years for things like water sources to degrade to the point that they'd make you sick. Most people who get sick from water typically become ill because of people bathing and using the toilet in the water, or because of toxic materials leaking into the water source. Getting a cut can be pretty dangerous, but medicine still exists. It's just rare. Most people have basic first aid knowledge and know how to to deal with it, something simple cavemen didn't. Honestly, the biggest danger in TWD has always been other people. Especially in the games. By 400 Days and Season 2 people have pretty much coped with the Walkers and established ways for avoiding or separating them from their groups.

St. Johns had a huge farm that fell under because Lee sabotaged their generator. Crawford failed because one woman took a gun and sought revenge for being exploited. Roman's group started their own garden, used Walkers to guard themselves but fell apart because of a domineering leader and bandits. Episode 2 ends with the peace established after Clem and Kenny's reunion being disturbed by Carver who cuts through the Walkers with ease.

So, yeah, so long as you can find a nice place to establish a home and guard yourselves from outside forces, you'd survive pretty easily.

  • lol great! plus, it would attract a lot of people too, because pizza attracts everyone, we would have sacrifices forever!

  • A plethora of options to choose from!
