Private Shu hoped that backup would come soon, it wouldn’t be too long before the mercenaries would move up, but he didn’t want to put hope into it. “They’re most likely already dead.” He said to himself as he reloaded his assault rifle, and prepared for anyone unlucky enough to come around that set of trees that blocked him from the sights of the shooters. He wasn’t any medic, but Shu believed that Lennart could have a concussion, or maybe even interior bleeding. Shu shuttered at that thought, being on a tropical island, hunted, all alone. He tapped Lennart once more to try and wake him up, but as he touched him, he felt a shock go throughout his body, and then he remembered he was still wounded. He now stood up with his back to a tree peering out from the cover of the thick brush of the tropical forest, “I don’t know which one of those bastards got me…but today they’ll regret the day they were born.”
“So, we gonna get these assholes or what?” Byrne said to his colleague, as he looked down the red dot sights of his standard issue, black, mercenary rifle.
“No, mate.” Davidson answered, “The Hunters told us to hold up, make sure they don’t go anywhere and wait for backup.”
Byrne looked in distaste at his friend, “You’re serious? Two trained mercenaries armed to the teeth versus a knocked out soldier and a wounded one, and they think we wouldn’t win? Why the fuck do they hire us then? Come on, let’s finish them…let’s earn our pay.”
Davidson’s eyes checked out the large trees and bushes that the hostiles receded into, and let out an unsure, “I don’t know…”
Byrne stood up and said, “I do. Now let’s take ‘em out.”
Shu heard the footsteps of steel-boots hitting against the damp forest floor, and took cover in a bush adjacent to the one where he hid Lennart. The two heavily armed men in black combat vests walked into the small secluded area. The brush looked treacherous from the outside of it, but once entered it was twenty meters of open ground with bushes dotted everywhere, which gave the only protection. The mercenaries knew this and started pulling on branches to see the contents of each bush, at this rate Shu knew they would be on him in minutes.
“Hey, I found one!” Byrne yelled as he noticed Lennart’s left arm sticking out of a bush. Shu cursed under his breath, and knew that if he had properly put Lennart into the hiding place, he wouldn’t have been in this predicament.
Shu stood up and fired a volley of bullets at the opponent near his location, then as he turned to fire on the other one, his enemy was in his face and disarmed Shu. Shu stood hopeless of the last enemy that had taken his weapon, when the enemy called out, “Davidson? Davidson, you alright buddy?” After several seconds of no answer, Byrne aimed the military rifle directly at Shu’s head and said, “You fucked with the wrong people, soldier boy.” Right as he said that line, Lennart’s arm stretched across with his razor sharp combat knife in his hand and slit the enemy’s throat.
“You good, Shu?” Lennart asked with the blood of the fallen foe sprayed across his arm and face.
“Yeah, man,” Shu answered in surprise, “I’m good.”
Swaggy laughed at the body falling to the ground with a bullet wound in her chest. “This is the life.” He said to himself, “Good money and good hunting.” So far, he had eliminated five targets, that’s fifty thousand in his bank account. None of his team knew where he came from, and personally nobody wanted to, they just let him do his job, so they could do theirs. He loaded his Barretta M95 Bolt Action rifle and just thought about how much Academi missed out on not hiring him.
Lee screeched at the troopers recovering from the helicopter crash, “Return fire! Return fire!” The entire team, excluding those missing in action (Pvt. Shu and Pvt. Lennart), were all now using the crashed chopper as cover, but it was clear that they had to get out of this area, the mercenaries could circle around at any moment and ambush them. Lee understood this, because he had been in a situation very similar to this. “Troopers, make it to the trees!”
As soon as he yelled it, Lieutenant Mark, Private First Class Frost and Private Kozlov dashed for the treeline, but both Lance Corporal Jayden and First Sergeant Sinclair didn’t hear the order, due to their side of the helicopter receiving heavy fire. Lee ran up and knocked on Sinclair’s helmet with his aviator gloves, “Get to the tree line, Sergeant!”
“Yes, sir!” Sinclair answered over the sound of bullets while tapping Frost on the shoulder and referencing to follow him with a jerk of his head. Lee ran straight up behind them covering them all the way, he wanted to make sure that the only casualty in this firefight was going to be-
“Fuck!” Lee yelled while collapsing to the ground after a bullet shattered its way through his pelvic bone. Sinclair and Jayden turned around to go and help him, when an array of bullets flew centimeters away from their faces. “Go! Go! Get the hell out of here!” Lee yelled as his final order.
Sinclair nodded and pulled on Jayden’s shoulder. Jayden looked at the dying man with shocked eyes, and one thought came through his mind, “It could’ve been any of us. Why him?” Jayden then turned around and followed Sinclair back into the trees. The last thing Jayde saw was Lee taking out his sidearm and sitting up, and started firing nonstop at the approaching enemies. Then he heard the sounds of two loud cracks, most likely coming from a shotgun, and Lee’s return fire ceased.
Shade saw the silhouette of a man, and muzzled his submachine gun, without looking down at his weapon. He stared at his enemy, who was preoccupied sharpening a stick against a small stone. Then a thought came through his mind, where was the other one.
Raul tackled him from behind and put him in a full nelson, yelling as he did to warn his ally, Eeuss, who had just finished making a thick branch into a weapon. Eeuss charged the trapped Hunter, furiously letting out a war cry, but Shade used his feet to kick the weapon making it miss his body and then round house kicked his enemy in the side of the head. He then used the back of his head to head-butt the hostile holding him, eventually breaking free. Shade stood up straight, wearing his thick Elite Hunter Nanoflex Armor with pride, while hiding his eyes behind a pair of blood red night vision goggles, inspiring fear into both of the veterans, but nevertheless they fought on. Each punch dealt by the Hijackers were blocked by the Hunter, but whenever Shade tried to attack one of the hostiles, they would agilely avoid it.
Raul then saw Shade’s silent submachine gun strewn across the thick forest floor and jumped down to retrieve it. Shade seeing this, attacked Raul by putting him into a forearm choke hold. Eeuss who had grown tired of this Hunter’s games grabbed his makeshift spear again and prepared to stab him in the back, but Shade, predicting this attack, fell backwards, making him and Raul avoid the attack. Shade then used one of his arms to punch Eeuss in the groin, which brought him tumbling down, yelling “You son of a bitch!” Raul had grown very tired and began slipping out of consciousness, when Eeuss finally stood back up and dropped to one knee on Shade’s face, near immediately letting go of his hold on Raul. Eeuss lifted his knee up to see a blood stained face had smeared the red liquid all over his pants. He then fumbled to retrieve the Hunter’s gun and fired ten rounds into the dying man’s chest.
Eeuss offered Raul his hand, which he accepted, and lifted his tired comrade off the floor. “That guy was one tough asshole.” Eeuss said, letting out a sigh.
They then both heard mumbling coming from the Hunter’s dead body, and Raul leaned down and investigated. He then noticed that Shade’s night vision goggles were hooked up to a head set, which Raul put on.
Valerie’s voice came through, calling out with a strong order, “Hunter, respond, that’s an order.”
Raul then answered her with a cold and frightening voice, “I’m real tired of your games, bitch. We’re going to find you, and when we do, we’ll fucking skin you!” He then threw it on the ground and stomped on the headset.
Eeuss looked at him and said, “So, I guess it wasn’t a good conversation.”
Rafael looked tirelessly at what remained of the crash survivors, Awesomeo, Hershel, Claude, Mutt and Dany. What remained? Their flight had hundreds on it, and now it was just the six of them. He didn’t know what happened to Tomi, King, Kyle or Puncake, but after Alexis got shot, they all scattered. Rafael hoped to do whatever he could to get the rest of them out of here. He stared up at the night’s sky. It was lit up with all sorts of stars, at the likes of which he had never seen. They had survived the first night. “Let’s hope we survive some more.” He said to himself as he drifted off to sleep.

Private Shu hoped that backup would come soon, it wouldn’t be too long before the mercenaries would move … moreup, but he didn’t want to put hope into it.

Woah. Lennart saved my ass there. Good job, I was getting a little nervous for a second. I can't believe Lee got killed. That calls for vengeance.
Let's go, Lennart. It's you and me against these worthless sons of bitches. Time to be badass.
Holy lee my character was awesome! You know, until I died. but still, it was a cool way to go. Almost as good as lees death, sacrificing himself for his comrades...
They're Grunts, basically they're just hired guns that are used as security. If you look back Raul was actually a Grunt, he did security jobs for the Hunters. There's about a squad of them on the island.
You fought two ex-military badasses with your bare hands. I was trying to set it up as if you were supposed to be a main antagonist, but you were a great character. Rest in Peace, Shade, you died fighting.
Holy lee my character was awesome! You know, until I died. but still, it was a cool way to go. Almost as good as lees death, sacrificing himself for his comrades...
Awesome chapter, but I'm confused about the last paragraph...
What happened to Kelsey? You didn't mention her so I thought I skipped a part and she had died, but then I read the deaths list and she wasn't there soooo... did you forget to mention her or was it intentional?

That was awesome Clayton! Can't wait for the rest. R.I.P my character, wish he would have lived a bit longer but at least he went out making sure everyone else was safe, I'm proud of that. B]
Her part will become larger later. Right now, the first night, was kind of confusing, establishing where everyone is. It was intentional and your part will become larger as the story continues...if you live.
