It's a medieval fantasy where these different houses are fighting over the rights to this throne, or to be independent, and are all killing … moreeach other while these creatures are coming from north to kill them all, and most everyone is ignoring it because they're stupid. It's a lot bigger than that, but that's the basic plot (I probably did a pretty bad job summing it up, it's a lot cooler than it sounds).
A LOT of people die, and it doesn't matter who they are, anyone can die at any point in the story. A big theme of it is also the consequences of your choices, so it's a perfect game for telltale.
It pretty much comes down to whether or not you like a medieval setting, with dragons and magic (no elves and dwarves), with lots of twists and political stuff, and the occasional sword fight. I personally love it, but it's not for everyone.

It's set in the same universe as the show I believe, but I think it's a separate story. Kind of like how the walking dead and wolf among us were.

The basic lore is pretty complicated, but it's not particularly hard to understand.
I doubt they'll expect you to know all about it, I'm pretty sure they'll give you all the information to understand what's actually happening.
They might also do a book of fables type thing for it. It would definitely help.

I'm hoping to be able to hold out and wait for all the episodes on this one before playing them. Getting so tired of these short games.
