Does Kenny kind of remind you of Joel from TLOU?

  • There was just too much wisecracking for me in general.

Joel: "That's all right; I believe him"
    shoots cannibal

Joel: "You know he's expecting us."
Tess: "Well, that'll make it more interesting."

Ellie: What is the leading cause of divorce in long-term marriages?
    ...
    Ellie: A stalemate.
    Joel: That's awful.
    Ellie: You're awful.
Joel: Do you even understand what that means?
    Ellie: Nope... it doesn't matter.

Henry: "Damn, man. You hit hard."
Joel: "Yeah? Well, I was trying to kill you."

Ellie: [after shooting an enemy] "I did good, right?"
Joel: "Don't let it go to your head. Let it go to theirs."

It just never felt natural for me.

  • Kenny is anything but boring.
He's a strong, brave, loyal, and decent man.
Yes, The Walking Dead had a negative affect on him, but then again TWD had a negative affect on everyone.

Both Kenny and Joel were loving fathers, who lost pretty much lost everything and everyone they cared for.
And yet, with help, they regained their humanity.

Except Joel is a phenomenally well written character complete with genuine character flaws and interesting moral dilemmas. Kenny is a boring character who is either pissed at everything or a caring and seemingly copasetic survivalist.

  • I agree.
Kenny and Joel are indeed superbly written characters!
    So was Lee.

You know I didn't actually remember that until now.
And the first time I played TLOU, I didn't really notice it, as I was always busy thinking what my next move needed to be, so that I wouldn't get my head blown off.

One thing I will say, TLOU had superb combat mechanics.
    Sneaking around.
    Ammo conservation.
Opponents actually afraid when Joel brandished a firearm. ( That detail made the game feel so realistic.)
    And etc.

I guess the only thing I didn't like, was that jog Joel did.
You know when he wasn't running, he jogged everywhere by default?
Why couldn't they have Joel walk by default, like they did John Marston in Red Dead Redemption?
That's the only thing that made TLOU feel un-real.
    What do you think?

  • Really?
I'd like to read that thread.
    What's it called?

Yes they are similar. I made a thread comparing Kenny to Rick Grimes and Joel and how they all do what needs to be done for their loved ones. Kenny is a perfectly written character.

  • Depends in a post apocalyptic work wear anything n jump out at you, would you just walk? Lol

  • Because Joel went soft on him

How is that bastard still standing after taking a hit like that?

  • Yeah, Kenny would've handed that guy's ass to him; in spades!

  • If I'm honest, I actually thought Kenny's character was at least going somewhere interesting in No Going Back, still though.

  • No, Kenny is a stupid mad dog, while Joel jas sp,e semse

  • Kenny actually reminds me some of "The Man" form Cormack McCarthy's The Road. Funnily enough, Gavin Hammon has said that he draws inspiration from that character when voicing Kenny.

  • Joel all the way!

  • I'm gonna say that Joel kills more people in almost any given scene than Kenny killed in the series so far.

Ummm I'd say they're about equal.

  • Joel is so much more bad ass and better than Kenny. Kenny is sort of a bitch. Clem has more sense than him and he's a grown ass man.

  • One thing you have to remember, Kenny was in a state of intense grief and mental anguish for most of the game.
Someone who's in that position, is not going to be very rational.
So in my opinion, that's not a fair comparison.

  • Well, if you got all the tapes in the last mission, they kinda say otherwise, right?

Makes sense I guess. Joel was also willing to murder people to protect people they love. Hell Joel doesn't even get to claim insanity. he just wasn't willing to let Ellie go even though it might have saved humanity.

  • Its been a while. Might play it again soon but I recall all of them being hopeful about it.

  • Now imagine if the AI was as good as it was meant to be. They toned down the AI because people testing it said it was too hard.

They since released a new difficulty mode that made it better but I haven't tried it.

I think the AI was the only problem with the game. Wasn't as hard as I would've liked.

It's been awhile since I played it too, but if I remember right, they say they had other immune survivors willing to give their lives for a cure, and it never worked. The chance for Ellie to create a cure was exceedingly slim, I believe. Could be wrong, iunno.

  • Joel calmer? Are you sure?

    RichWalk23 posted: »

While they have their similarities, Joel is calmer and more rational (in some areas) compared to Kenny, but not quite as sociable and group orientated.

  • He does. The first time I saw him, that's what I said. "He looks a little bit like Joel". But Kenny became more bad ass though, a one-eyed Kenny looks cool. However, in a brawl, we all know Joel is more brutal. In a team, they would be unstoppable. Kenny is better than Joel, more kind and loving. People say he's a lose canon, but he's actually no danger to Clementine and that's all that matters. Both have lost so much, but if you think about it, Kenny lost more than Joel. Joel was either divorced or widowed before the outbreak began. And he only lost his baby girl (although it is unclear, since in 20 years a lot can happen). Kenny lost his wife and child. Then his new-found girlfriend. Kenny however, never hurt anyone who didn't deserved it. Never killed anyone who didn't deserved it. Never harmed anyone who didn't deserved it. it is implied Joel was a bandit before, so he did some evil things.

  • Kenny with a crow-bar > Joel with a pipe XD

  • Btw, how did you encountered a thug in that part? That part didn't featured any enemies in my playthroughs. Mods?

Joel is a beast and a sexual tyrannosaur. Kenny was trying to steal Joel's shine...

  • I actually don't think those lines meant to be humorous. People talk like that. Specially military men. I am not saying Joel and Tess are military, but 20 years of apocalypse can make you talk like them. Ellie's joke book was a nice comic relief though. Those lame jokes (some were funny) actually made me laugh and be like "Are you serious? lol". And made it even more realistic. She'll get bored and read them to do something. Plus is a nice break from the hell they live in.

  • Isn't Jane more similar to Joel though? She's the one who robs Clementine of her agency and destroys any trust between the two of them in the name of saving her.

  • I have to agree.
Joel was using a little humour, to teach Elle important lessons about survival.
And in many respects Joel was a good teacher.
I think overall though, Joel was a little to serious for my taste.

Kenny, while depressed for a good majority of the game, showed he still had a lightheadedness about him, when he and Clementine raced to the top of that hill.
And back at the lodge when Clementine and him had dinner together.
Kenny still had hope of something better.
Instead of just surviving from day to day.

I agree, Kenny does have a cooler look.
The only real cool thing about Joel's look is his beard.
And on that topic, one thing I noticed is, Joel and Elle's journey lasted an entire year, and yet at the end of the game, aside from different clothes, they looked exactly the same as when their journey began. You would think that their hair, and Joel's beard, would be a lot longer than it was at the end.

Granted they could've trimmed it during that time.
But even so, you would still think they would look a little different.

Now in Season 1, Kenny had a mullet and a biker mustache.
When we see him again in Season 2, he has a beard, and you can see that his hair has grown out a bit since then.

And as regards their actions, Kenny has got an angrier disposition.
But he has a greater humanity.
Still, Kenny could indeed be brutal when the situation called for it.
However, the longer he spent with Clementine, he slowly began to regain his old-self.
Though part of him died with his family and Sarita, Clementine helps re-awaken in him a spirit that been dead for a long time.

Joel on the other hand, may indeed be much calmer.
But considering his past of being a bandit, and when we meet him, a drug/weapons smuggler, he has a lesser humanity.
And thus is more prone to commit heinous acts.
However, over his time spent with Elle, he reclaims a part of himself, that had also been dead for a long time.

He does. The first time I saw him, that's what I said. "He looks a little bit like Joel". But Kenny became more bad ass though, a one-eyed K
