Determinate characters, Urdnot Wrex?
I'm just throwing this out there, anybody else notice that so far no determinate characters have received the Urdnot Wrex (Mass Effect) treatment?
The idea is that you have them leave the player's group and give them very limited screen time from then on to save on production. You think Jane/Kenny might get this treatment in Season 3?
Does anybody else have a writing method as to how to deal with determinate characters that doesn't throw money out the window?

That'd be great. However, I kinda disliked how this was implemented in terms of Mass Effect... The alternate characters were bland and I felt no attachment to them. If Telltale can make the Jane/Kenny replacement likable and interesting then I completely support this idea.
The mass effect series was great for determinant charcaters. I mean 3 was full of characters that didnt even have to be there, the suicide mission in ME2 remains one of the biggest choice effects I've ever seen

Well, if they use the same method as with Wrex, Jane's replacement would be Kenny and Kenny's replacement would be Jane.
The staple of the idea though is to emphasize that you have the character leave or get separated from the group early on so as to save on production and keep the player's encounters with that character limited, same as Wrex.
I see what you mean. However, my Clem's alone with AJ so if they went with this format they'd have to create a new character specifically for me and others who concluded the game with that ending, and I doubt they'd put in full effort considering only a small fraction of players would ever see the character.
For most of the previous characters I am fine with the writing style they've been using. It's depressing as it should be. When Sara died it hurt because I was trying really hard to keep her alive. It was well done.
In this particular case though, I think that killing off Jenny/Kenny early on would enrage some players. Some of them have spent hours mulling over their own choice as to who should be saved between the two and have an emotional investment on that decision that is far stronger than a lot of the previous characters.
I think that having them become separated from the group would be a good writing decision, especially if it's done well. You can make the player feel despair being worried about if the character is alive or not but leave them with hope that the character is alive.

Speaking of Krogans... Warlord Okeer gives his life so that Grunt could live. He would pass up a rescue, which was intended for him in the first place, so that Grunt, a child compared to the other Krogans, would survive.

People will make jokes about Mass Effect choices not amounting to much, but characters that could die in ME2 still had some of my favorite roles of the series in ME3.
Of course, one of the tricks they did was having minor characters fill in for the roles of those who died, which usually resulted in a less satisfying outcome. i.e. If you got an important character killed, you missed out on story content and potential party members.
Unless the role that Kenny/Jane plays isn't as pivotal as Urdnot Wrex. You can write it in a way such that if they are there when you get to the point in which you might see them (much later in the game) that having them not be there doesn't feel wrong.
Example, say that after being separated you don't meet for years in game time. When you do meet up they are with a group of survivors and so are you and that you're headed in different directions. Kenny/Jane think that your group seems good, but they have some emotional investment in the group they met up with. Say... Jan'es prego, Kenny knocked somebody up, or something like that, so they just can't go with you.
If both are dead the place they'd be standing is just empty and that group is just one person smaller. The players that have them both being gone miss out on maybe 3-5 min of dialogue, so no big deal.
There's plenty of ways to write it such that you wouldn't need a full blown character replacement.

Ah, I see what you mean. That could be executed well and it would tie up all the loose ends neatly! I was under the impression that the determinant character would have a larger role (like Wreav or whoever Mordin's replacement was, can't remember his name) in which case there'd of course be a few issues involved.
Urdnot Wrex is the third greatest Mass Effect character, behind Garrus and Tali.
While on this subject, I REALLY hope S3's finale is like the suicide mission in ME2, especially if it's the final episode of the series.
