Season 2 a lot weaker than Season 1?
So I picked up season 1 TWD on steam, when it was on sale for $5. Even though i'm not a zombie genre fan, I thoroughly enjoyed season 1 and the game play. I'm a fan of the old school Lucas Art money Island series.
Then I figure, season 2 is out and it should be great or at least pretty good... based on how well done S1 was, I was totally okay paying full price for S2.... but to my surprise telltale changed a whole bunch of game mechanics and the story is no where near as compelling as season 1.
For me, season 1 is a 9.5/10 and season 2 is 6/10 at most.
Does anyone else feel the same way?
Season 1
Lee has plenty of chances to look around, interact with things in the surrounding, talk to ppl to get to know them better
Season 2
Clem have very few chances to talk to anyone outside of MANDATORY cinematic? Lee gets several opportunities to interact with the group at each episode... Clem... nope just cinematic after cinematic
In season 2, nope... NOTHING. I don't care about anyone. Can I talk to Carlos to know more about his and Sarah's situation... background... nope. Can I ask why Rebecca is such she's so mean? Nope, she's still a bitch as far as I'm concerned... pregnancy is not an excuse. Can I even talk to Mike to gauge at his potential as future ally? Nope.
Do I care about anyone in this entire season 2 (other than Luke or Jane or Kenny... because those are major plot point characters you HAVE to sit through the cinematic) Absolutely not.
Voice actor:
Whoever voiced for Lee was excellent, top notch. When he was calling out for Clem when she went missing, you can hear his panic.
Clem? She's monotone for most part, no emotion or just recycled yelling during QTE. I mean season 1 Clem voice actor is about 5x better than Season 2 voice actor... and with games like this.. it is big.
Story impact/ending
Entire season 2 ending is based on season 1. If I've never played season 1, i would be wondering why Clem is talking to this other guy in RV during her obvious dream sequence.
Without season 1 (context), Kenny seem like an impulsive and dangerous guy with mental problem.
You know your story is bad when your story climax is mostly based on another story (season 1) written by someone else?
I don't know if I'll get S3 when it comes out... i mean seriously. I paid for a GAME, not a movie or tv show. Stop FORCING cinematic on me, let me control my character... let me PLAY?
Comments
A lot of people think the same way you are, IMO I thought it was well worth the price and is almost equal to season 1, it was great.
Season 2 is weaker, but I personally wouldn't give it a 6...
Recycled files also happened in S1, right?
Clem's VA is the same in both seasons...
Clem's voice actor is the same voice actor as before -.-
I thought the recycling of files was bad as well, at least in season 1 you could never really notice it if it ever happened, in season 2 those stitching screams will never leave you lol.
I personally don't really mind. Maybe I'm in the minority.XD
I also don't mind Clem's new bored voice. I mean...the shit's she's gone through and all.
I liked Clem's voice this season but the stitching scream thing was just annoying to me also when Carlos died it sounded like Grendel was getting his arm ripped off.
dafuq? Are you playing the game or not?
First, its the same voice actor. Second, the no emotion part is stupid.
dafuq?
Its a sequel, stupid. Thats what sequels do. Also, that the story impact/ending depend of season 1 is just opinion.
Okay. And?
Lol, nope.
You know that season 2 is sequel, stupid? Besides, the story climax of season 2 is not based on season 1.
You know Season 1 is mostly like Season 2?
Only recycled file that I was kinda put off by was Sarita using Beatrice's screams.
When being reused or on the actual stitching? Cause that stitching scene was...really hard to go through, ouch.
I didn't rip his arm off, does he hold a bigger grudge against Bigby?
The reusing of the scream, and the arm rip choice really makes no difference in the end, in fact Snow get's mad at you instead of Gren himself in episode 4. But I think once in episode 5 Gren brings it up at the trial.
I just laughed at it, it kinda ruined the drama.
That one was the only one I liked and didn't notice
I didn't know the voice actor for Clem is the same for both seasons, they just sound so different. S1 being a child and more emotional and S2 is very monotoned (with some exceptions)
Man you guys reply fast
Well, Snow gets mad a lot so I can't say I'm surprised.
Oh, I gave Crookie a trial and he seemed to want him dead so I assume he brings it up if he's alive at this point?
Lots of people think the same, i wouldn't give Season 2 a 6/10 though, maybe an 8 or 8.5/10
I think season two is better than season one.
Clem voice actor is the same, Melissa Hutchison (actually every S1 character voice actor is the same) , she did the voice a little deeper cause Clem was already growing, she couldn't keep the same little girl voice.
This is her:
Nah I don't think he brings it up, though Snow will again at the trial if you bring crookie back dead. Don't quote me on that one though.
I don't agree with everything, but I do agree that season 1 was the strongest season. There were a lot of hit and miss things in season 2 and the lack of being able to go over to characters and speak with them like Lee could in season 1 leading to a lack of character development that often only seemed to come up for characters when they were soon fated to die.
Season 2 definitely improved on many things like the graphics and the quick time events and so on, but season 1 is still the best overall.
Ah, damn it, Snow, if anyone should be angry it's Gren. XD
Yeah that's what I was thinkin as well
I still like her though, haha.
She sounds different because she's maturing. And monotone, well...life must be pretty shit two/three years into the apocalypse, can't blame her.
Personally I felt that Season 2 was almost better, with my only concerns being with the ~100 minute episodes compared to Season 1's 150 minute episodes, the slightly more convoluted 4th episode that felt more like a filler, and borderline unnecessarily frequent death scenes throughout with predictably determinant characters that lost all purpose once they were earmarked as determinant.
Overall I felt the episodic writing of Season 2 was better, character development was slightly weaker due to the determinant characters not carrying much impact (Nick, Alvin, Sarah, et al). The choice at the end and the difficulty in choosing who to side with is what proves this season to be just as good as the last. This Season was way harder on Clementine than Season 1 was on Lee in terms of decision-making, social interactions, bad situations and the journey throughout.
Yes exactly, I mean I WANT to know these character, let me talk to them, let them tell me their stories.
I did notice graphic and quick time event improvement as well but at the heart of these type of games (role playing games with point and click?) are stories and character development.
If I wanted top notch graphic or reflex based game, i would play shooter game. Graphics improvements are nice to have.
Season 1 started the whole craze.. so...?
I think the season was solid all around, I came out with a few characters I liked more than some of the characters from season 1 (Nick being my favorite out of the season 2 group), it wasn't as good as season 1 but at least the characters were there, I just wish they hadn't wasted some of their potential.
I miss you Nick.
agreed, i wish at least 1 or 2 of the cabin survivors made it to season 3.
Yes, I would agree S2E5 is the best episode so far but conversely... why should anyone buy S2, E2-E4?
It's complete filler?
I would buy S2E1 to know what happened to Clem after S1 and S2E5 for the climax.
If you've watched the TV series up to Governor, it's the same almost (in regards to Carver story line). Given the lack of character development (because of bad game design, can't talk to other ppl), S2E2 to S2E4 is almost a complete blur of meh, did something happened that I should care about?
Generally season 2 was good but season 1 is superior in most ways. IMO season 2 suffered from what tv show seasons 2 and 3 also suffered, too much dramatic events where forced into it, pretty much every action lead to some kind of a conflict but in the long run nothing really made a big impact on the ending. There was also a serious lack of humor, Nick had some good comedic releaf moments and he got killed. Kenny had a few funny lines, like that speak american one but thats pretty much it. Big problem was that no matter how you react you never really change anything that much, season 1 had way more variations, you could chose to take Clem to Crawford or not, Doug/Carley choice had a big impact on the game and if you antagonize Kenny he doesn't help you when you get attacked by the walkers or in the farm. In season 2 you have those moments you feel like your making a difference but whatever you do with Sarita Kenny still is mad with you, no matter how you treat Alvin, Carlos or Rebecca they still end up liking you. Got that nice scene teaching Sarah to use a gun, well that will never come into play. Choosing to save Sarah was almost like a joke about the supposed motto of choices matter.
Yeah S2 have some really meaningless "decisions" I think there was a supposedly major decision to "hold the baby"!? I was like, that's a MAJOR decision!?
I really liked season 2. I didn't mind having almost no hubs as those points in the game were my least favorite in season 1. In season 1 I thought the puzzles were almost all annoying and silly. If I were to, say, record myself playing for family to view; I'd pull out almost all of the puzzles as they aren't interesting, are easy, and reduce immersion.
In season 2 it felt like I was being swept into situations and had much less control, but I liked that as I was playing a little kid.
I liked the dialogue more in season 2 almost universally. The character to character felt much more natural and there were fewer places where the writing had hickups that seemed out of place.
I basically feel like season 2 dropped a lot of what wasn't working from season 1 and focused on what telltale does well, which is storytelling.
I think season 2 could have been really a lot better than this, but I don't think it was bad.
He's actually got a point with some of them, if I hadn't played season 1 then ep2 of this season would not nearly have as much emotional depth
I like it overall and it has it's moments, but the season reeks of wasted potential. Carver, Nick, Sarah and Christa all got screwed over despite being built up massively. The narrative isn't nearly as strong this time either with weak plots per ep. I stand by saying that episode 3/4 ruined the season's narrative. Pierre, why'd you have to screw up this bad?
You know Christa won't stay because it needs to soft reset the season
You know Carver's dead as soon as your entire group has been captured.
Nick has potential except you seem to have mostly negative interaction with him (when he's upset)
Sarah actually have a lot of potential, I mean she's sheltered by Carlos so if writer wanted to, they could have literally made Clem mentor Sarah so to speak as opposed to one of those you know she's gonna die character the second her father died.
Did you try going with Nick in episode 2? That scene in the shed is awesome. To be honest, Nick isn't upset that often, and he takes responsibility for his actions a lot of the time. To be honest, most of the Cabin Group were wasted potential.
He's got a point with Kenny. Kenny always exploding in anger. Nothing connects him to Clementine.
I may replay S2, but I really don't want to go through E2-4... it's like watching a rerun (that's not all that great)
I thought episode 2 was one of the best in the series, but yeah it does seem like a rerun. By the way did anyone die for you in episode 2? Because Nick and Alvin can die or survive depending on your choices. Though they don't affect much later, but if Alvin survives he gets a great sendoff scene.
