To be honest, I thought Clementine was a mix of African American and Asian or some other race. Any clue about her true race is some what ambiguous, but the reason I thought she was mixed was because of her eye color (I never met a full African American with her eye color, but I could just be misinformed on how eye color works). Her skin is in between light and dark so she could honestly be anything. Some people thought she was Lee's daughter, so she obviously has some African American traits in her. However, people like Christa and Vernon knew that Clementine was not Lee's daughter. She could also try to pass off as Sarah's sister, so she obviously isn't a full race individual.
I think this is an "issue" because of miseducation. I think people expect African Americans to act like Michelle (the girl who killed Omid), or like the people in the bus in 400 days. It's quite a sad misconception, but because Clementine is not like this, it confuses people. To be honest she isn't as obviously portrayed as Lee, Christa, Mike, Russlle, Michelle, Rebecca, or Alvin. She doens't have their type of facial structure or features that make it obvious. This is the only reason why I see that people argue over this. Sure some people are racist and ignorant, but I for one love Clementine for her personality and actions, not her race/ ethnicity.
Analyzing her parents and then looking at Clem you would be right to be confused about her ethnicity. Her skin pigment should be much darker and that's what African/American genes should entail, providing that the Father's skin is dark.. Which it is in Clem's father's regard. So therefore it's DianaEdfusing to me...

I don't care if she mixed or not (confirmed by developers she is African American) but im glad I had a chance to see/play her story, never cared so much about a character such as clementine... Not even in books, movies you name it!
These type of threads can turn bad with people getting offended by comments that could be racist so i'm going to close it but i will give some interesting information.
Officially her race is African American
According to a gameinformaer article called Creating Clementine her design was based of the daughter of Derek Sakai who who works at Telltale as a art director.
Sakai drew inspiration for much of Clementine’s design from his young daughter, who wears a similar cap.
Derek is Asian and so is his daughter so it could be possible that Clementine did get some Asian features due to the fact her design was based off someone who was Asian but her official race is still African American.

Black people come in various shades.

As a black person, I can confirm that.
I thought I read somewhere that they made Clem a bit ambiguous looking so she could appeal to everyone.
Same here.

We all know it had to be done.
Well Walt did call Russel a spook, so that rules that out.
Okay.
