Well there is a line which you cannot cross and killing off Clementine as a kid is crossing that but if they kill her off as an adult people would be butt hurt and that's it.
BTW before you say that oh telltale killed off Duck but it was different Duck was bitten and there is only one way that solve that and it was also to show the development of Kenny.

Incorrect. While Clementine successfully died in Episodes 1-4, she made it through Episode 5 unscathed. Well... except for being nearly frozen... and shot... you know what, forget the unscathed comment. BUT SHE MADE IT!
