How Exactly Did Nick Die?

edited September 2014 in The Walking Dead

Okay sorry for being my idiotic self but I still have little to no idea how Nick died. At the beginning of 'Amid The Ruins' we see him get shot in his shoulder. A worrying wound, but we saw someone like Mike who got hit later in 'No Going Back' deal with a gunshot wound quite fine. So Nick should hopefully be fine. But we then find him like this:

What exactly happened? I know a walker most likely bit him, but I'm not sure what could have went down since I know Nick wouldn't be dumb enough not to notice a walker there. Maybe he got stuck on the fence, but he appears to have been impaled. So I guess the walker bit him behind the fence, he fell got impaled and left to turn? I have no honest idea.

Maybe I'm still in denial. Fuck it, I'm still in denial about every ones death.

  • Maybe that walker cornered him and he got his right hand stuck in the fence causing the walker to bite him.

My guess is that he was overwhelmed when he tried to crawl out of the fence. Maybe his right arm got caught before the walker attacked so he was handicapped in the struggle and it just neck'd him.

Get it? It's a pun on "wrecked!"

    I'm funny.

  • I wish I had a pic of it, but the walker in the green running gear, if Nick dies there he has blood on his mouth, but if Nick died in ep 2 he Doesnt.

  • Basically the very next walker you see has blood all over him if Nick survived Ep 2, and it's fresh. It's not there if he died in Ep 2.

There was also a trail of blood leading to the fence.

What I think happened is after looking for help, he found a walker and, too weak from the gun shot wound, could'nt fight it off and got bitten on the neck. While he held his neck, the walker then chomped on his right ankle. Nick somehow managed to get away from it and crawled to the fence. Remembering how the zombified woman bit his mother before Clem showed up, he stuck his arm in the fence, in an attempt to not harm anyone who might find him there.

Atleast, that's the most logical thing I can gather from his cryptic death :)

  • This is the best I can come up with given the miserable circumstances surrounding Nick's death.

Nick tells Luke he's going to look for help. He goes out of the trailer, already weakened from the gunshot wound. He can't fight off or evade a walker because of his weakened state. It gives him the chomp. Knowing he won't last long, Nick wedges himself into the fence so he won't harm any of his friends when he turns. Then Jane and Clem come upon him.

Still... why wouldn't Luke give him a weapon of some sort I wonder?? His machete? or that AK-47 Luke always has? You'd think Luke would give his friend of 20 years some kind of protection right?

  • Headcanon confirmed.

He has a bite on his neck or his leg, right? And the walker has/doesn't have blood depending on if he died in Episode 2 or not, so he was probably bit.

Not sure how he got tangled in that fence though.

  • Yep, he was bit in the neck with bite marks also on his calves and ankles. Most likely they just reused his bit model from EP2 (if you didn't tell Walter Nick was a good guy). He was bitten in the neck in that scene as well, so they did a little head work, desaturated the model, and hung it on a fence which would account for why his clothing turned grey along with his skin. In other words I don't really think a whole lot of work went into Nick's death they just wanted to get rid of him. Shame really.

You would think luke would go himself, and not send the wounded guy to go.

  • I think he got surrounded against the fence by the walkers and as died he fall on to the fence and got impaled. He might have heard Sarah and was trying to reach them but got caught by the zombies. Luke didn't see Nick so it during the hours he was talking with Sarah, before Clem and Jane arrived.

  • Me too.

  • Telltale were all like 'Fuck it, lets kill him'

So they reached over and pressed their big, shiny, red, kill character button (they have those). And Nick died. In an offscreen death. Thee end.

  • His VA didn't talk so I'm not really surprised.

    Poor Nick...

  • Yeah, but looking for his name and not seeing it was really kicking us while we were down.

Atleast Julia Farmer was in there, for a line or 2 of dialogue.

He was shot through the shoulder, lower down than Clem was.

Chances are that he was bleeding out or suffered internal injuries if it wasn't a clean shot; perhaps it ricocheted off of a rib or something. I expect, going by what Luke said, after they chased Sarah into the trailer Nick adamantly battled his way out of the park up to the fence, where he passed out from a cardiac arrest due to blood lost and overexertion.

I don't think he was bit, but I will affirm that Nick had the shittiest death of the series so far. Then again, the other survivors can't all die within line of sight of Clem, nor should everybody get a chance to be in the limelight or play the hero.

Sometimes life ain't fair and people die in shitty, undeserved, lame and unexpected ways.

  • He was bit. Take a look at this walker.

    Alt text

It only has blood on it's mouth when Nick is alive up to the point where you confront it, however, if Nick died, it has no blood, furthermore, Nick has a bite taken out of his neck, as viewed in this photo.

So we may conclude that this walker killed Nick.

Perhaps he passed out then as I mentioned above, and got neck-chomped?

  • Maybe he was running to the hole in the fence, and that one walker in the green, grabbed and bit his leg,(this would explain the leg bite) he tripped and got tangled up in the fence and then the walker ripped out his throat.

  • Gill was also there for like two lines. Sad.

  • I don't know but if you look closely you can see a bite mark on his ankle also. Maybe tripped got bitten in the ankle, staggered to the fence couldn't make it through while the walker started devouring him.
