Was it ever revealed who she was or what happened to her? I believe that her absence is the reason why Sarah had anxiety problems in the first place.

In a TTG interview on some website they were asked about Sarah and the answer they gave about her was that she had something similar to PTSD; she experienced a traumatic event in the past.
Her mother isn't around. Putting two and two together I'd guess that she went into a similar 'shutdown mode' like in Amid the Ruins before Carlos brought her back but sheltered her at the same time.
