No Going Back Was One Of The Worst Of The Series
I know its subject to hate and argument but I feel No Going Back was one of the worst episodes in either Season 2 or 1. It follows suit and fails at doing the "Illusion of Choice" almost as bad as Amid The Ruins which is of course not a good thing.
The Gun Fight
This angered me. In the end of Amid The Ruins the Russians have the group held up. Now seeing the angle they were pointing in at least 3 people in the group would be dead. Secondly the save AJ and Go to Luke changes nothing and is not even referred to later. Also when Kenny grabs Arvo all the dialogue options are practically identical. Jane's return felt badly written. I mean look at it, it came out of no where.
The Lake and Luke's anti climatic death
Good god a terrible point in the episode. We knew Luke's character was ruined since Episode 3 but could they do better than rip off Titanic. Also the Cover Luke and Save Luke change nothing. Many people will say "Oh it affects your relationship with Bonnie", fuck that they had all season to make and build on relationships and they didn't. I don't care about a change in dialogue that lasts two cut scenes.
Mike, Bonnie, Arvo run away
People are building this up as something when the scene was chalky written and the player had no influence over it. I never gave a damn about Mike and he had no character development in the other episodes but him and Arvo are the only ones that matter in S3 (Wtf what about Nate). The Can I go with you option was god awful and Breckon should be ashamed that he was that lazy. Keep in mind you could ask Lily if you could go with her but even her being there is determinant.
Kenny vs Jane
The worst climax I think I've ever seen. I don't blame Breckon entirely since I know his original plan was Kenny vs Luke but was changed by those amateurs Petty and Stripe, so he only had so much to work with. Jane never should have existed and she was a shitty last second replacement for Luke for god knows why. The build up and writing up to this was absolute shit. I get the feeling they wanted to be "unpredictable". When it comes at the cost of ruining the entire plot just forget about it. This could have been decent but Jane shouldn't have even been in the story.
I did like the alternate endings. It offers a new taste to the story but still doesn't redeem how bad the episode was. It was better than the shit fest Amid The Ruins but not by that much.
Comments
Amid the Ruins...Still got to say it's the worst.
so i bet someone would make a "No Going Back: Defense thread" sooner or later....
I didn't really like No Going Back much either.
Also I love this line you said:
The NATE-ion unite!
personally I liked this episode, now im not going to go all "you're shit, this episode is one of the best episodes if not the best episodes on the game" because no one wants to see that..
I respect you're decision and I did agree with some of the facts that were stated in here ie: the shootout, I was mindblown when i found out that no one had died, escept for Natasha and I think another russian and one was shot and laying on the ground with a shotgun, yeah Mike was hit and Luke shortly got shot in the leg afterwards, the Russians had shotguns and rifles and our group had pistols and I think Luke was the only one that had a rifle and he ended up wounded? Sorry Telltale but that's not right....
YES forget the Kennyists
Natetion
One day brothers will we unite, and strike down our enemies....let us pray to Nate to give us strength in the words:
Hail Nate, full of whiskey. The truck is with thee. Blessed are thou among junkies, and blessed is the fruit of thy loin Beak. Holy Nate, father of Rus, pray for us asswipes, now onto the hour of our fight. Amen.
There's no need for one, the episode was highly praised among many, rightfully so IMO.
Out of nowhere? Lol, everyone knew that was coming.
People complain people die too fast and too many people die, sure it might be illogical but I thought keeping them alive was a good idea, rather than killing them all off by the beginning of the episode.
Uhhh what? Just cause someone dies from falling in a freezing lake does not mean it's ripping off the Titanic, 2 completely different deaths.
Except you don't know that, so lol.
Again with these threads using bad writing for examples, if you can't say something better than bad writing for a point then that point isn't very good in the first place.
That was actually originally supposed to be the "Did You Shoot Mike?" However, it was changed for an unknown reason (they either felt it was out of Clem's character or they have plans for Mike, or an entirely different reason).
This can be shown when you threaten Mike, if you notice the scene drags on weirdly as if you should be able move your cursor, that was originally the point where you move the cursor and fire it at Mike.
Or maybe, it was simply a choice of who to sit with, and everyone blew it out of proportion.
The Kenny and Luke thing was heavily foreshadowed in episode 2. Most people saw the direction it was going in as seen with the who did you sit with choice.

It was a pretty quick fix, some people on the PS3 could still do it until they patched it.
They really messed it up. It just seemed so lazy and rushed

The entire Episode was just illogical, the only point that I really got into was the final act of it. Even then the the final choice was the easiest in the game for me.
Anyway, I didn't think the episode was that bad, just really silly.
I agree, but mainly because I didn't like how the story continued on throughout Amid the Ruins and No Going Back after the rushed Carver death. If you want to look at it as an episode of its own, its not that bad.
That's not true. It was heavily implied that it was supposed to be Carlos Vs. Rebecca Vs. Alvin Vs. Luke Vs. Nick Vs. Pete at the end, it was never in doubt when you had to appeal to one of them when they're discussing what to do with you in Ep. 1, imo.
Except the Lee death, everything is rushed for you guys.
Still you could tell it was quick and thrown together without any effort. A small dialogue option that changes nothing should not be a main choice, what were they thinking?
Season 2 was eerily similar to the show.
Both need to pay MORE attention to detail.
I would have to agree. This episode was only marginally better than the previous two episodes, but as a finale it was pretty lousy.
The only good thing we had out of No Going Back was that we finally had a 'sit together, talk together, and give us a reason to care for these people' that we've been waiting for.
Everything else was pretty subpar. We ended up tagging along with unlikable characters (Kenny and Jane), we had characters act OOC for the sake of drama (Bonnie and Mike), and we had a character killed off purely for shock value (Luke).
i want to see some of more Nate VS Kenny threads in the future..
I get the feeling if we spent more time with Nate people would feel more liable to help him.
Take my like, just take it.
well... i have to learn more about Nate... since he's a interesting character.. crazy.. but damnn scary at the same time
Only thing that bothered me was the gun fight, Everyone teleported and guns were switched
Agreed.
Episode five was so bad in terms of the writing and the bastardization of every character that I found myself giggling most of the episode... Which I think was the absolute last thing TellTale wanted.
And I just want to say that if you want people to care for the narrative you're trying to craft, write situations and characters with an identity and make them feel relatable. I mean, good God, every-single-character was so dull and had no expansion to them that I felt nothing by the end of the season but a tad disappointed there wasn't a "fuck off A.J." ending. I mean, that's bad TellTale. The single most important plot device in the final episode was my main target to get rid off.
And that atrocious beginning? I can't recall a worse intro into something... A Mexican standoff resulting in possibly the coolest moment of season 2 (the cliffhanger at the end of Episode 4) ended with everybody being fine on our side... oh, sorry! Luke gets his "wittle weg shot" and Mike has a booboo on his shoulder. Fucking hell. No consequence yet again in a game that is supposedly all about 'em.
As you probably noticed, I love second season. My heart says "In harms way" is the worst. Yes, final episode was bad, but IHW beats it.
Carver was promoted from mysterious villain to asshole, talktative bully. His motives were dull. Even in the face of death he can't shut up. Rest of camp of course didn't notice true face of their leader. Governor again. Becca and people from 400 days were a joke. Clem is ninja - climbs roofs and nobody sees her. Alvin sits in the chair untied but is too lazy(?) to act. Kenny fights Mike so the zombies can appear for a while. Luke teleports himself inside but later is caught stealing food. His plan - stealing walkie talkie is crazy bad plan. Why people on the roof were shooting? Too much ammo? Why didn't block the entrance, stay quiet and wait for herd to pass? Ninja Clem is cutting limbs off with her sword, sorry, axe. Lee taught a little killing machine.
"In harms way" pissed me a lot. Worst episode.
Wittle weg shot and a boo boo?
My reaction to that scene...
Can I say something crazy?
Where have you been all my life!? T_T You're right, even what few good months were in there, No Going Back was terrible!
Woah woah woah, stop right there. How can you look at that munchkin and think "little killer"?.
Yeah, for a season finale episode, it was pretty boring.
What do you mean "no consequences"?
Now they have to go on a harrowing expedition to find MORE BAND-AIDS!
I liked it
How about the fact that there's literally no difference between waiting several days at the observation deck and leaving immediately? Even though it's made explicitly clear that the rest of the group would starve, and Rebecca still dies anyway?
What were they thinking with that "choice?" It's not just a matter of making you feel powerless - it actually makes it blatantly obvious that none of these characters are really troubled by illness/cold/hunger/pain/thirst.
It and Amid The Ruins occupy the bottom of the series' episodes.
Like I said before, No Going Back tried way too hard on trying to be No Time Left. Many things felt forced, no real build up from Amid The Ruins or any other episode for that matter. Kenny V Luke- Nope.avi The town they where to go to near the ending of Amid The Ruins- You wish Plot- No way. Logic-Tell that to Lake Luke. Get it? cause he died in the lake, and it was rename after him, and uhhhh... Nevermind. And of course, the the biggest middle finger was that shitty "Lone wolf ending". Do I even have to explain how fucked up ending was. But of course out of all the people in the world, A fucking J survived. The walking plot device survived all of this bullshit.
It you get anything from this however, is that don't hate No Going Back. I actually kinda like it. It just had so many problems with it's whole plot, and main story focus. Looks directly at Kenny
