Does The Walking Dead TV Show Suck now?

edited February 2015 in The Walking Dead

I started watching the second half of season five, and I feel like half of it is random pretending to be artsy (ie the cuts in 5e09), or alluding to earlier seasons, like in 5e10 when Maggie opens the trunk and there's a zombie tied up and it's like "remember? Maggie will suddenly have flashbacks to when she was sexually assaulted in that season you enjoyed a lot more than this one?" So far it's all been 'Hey, think back to all those episodes and characters you used to like, think about those while we rest on our laurals'

Plus, all of a sudden "hey Christian audience, you can feel validated now, ever though we've had no strong religious themes before this."

  • What's the christian audience thing about?

  • I'm Christian and i haven't seen the last season, because i watched the episode man, and at the very end. I sitting there watching it with this girl i just met on social media, and there is that "NOT AGAIN RAPE SCENE." I'm like WTF man, i don't want to see that shit, she acted like it was entertainment. Ever since then i haven't watched a episode, its just getting too real for me.

  • stopped watching months ago, when they were stuck at the prison for like forever...lol

  • After Frank Darabout was fired the show became garbage.

  • I've never understood this, he wrote the first half of season 2 which many consider the weakest point. Just because he left before people dont associate him with it

After Frank Darabout was fired the show became garbage.

  • i still watch it..there are a few characters that i like.

  • season 2 was very good, didn't Dale leave/got wrote out of the show because of the treatment of Frank Darabont?

  • didnt read the comics...but i think TT is a lot better than the show.

Yep he did write the first half of Season Two, but guess what? He did it on a way smaller budget and they had to film the show in one location. That drained the show's quality completely and after he left it got even worse.

  • Its sucked for ages

  • I felt the first half of season 3 was the highest point the show got and everything since then has gotten progressively worse (with a few exceptions like the season 4 mid season finale, and the first 3 episodes of season 5) I'm hoping though that they can bring it back with the rest of season 5, the first 2 episodes of the later half of season 5 were pure trash IMO but I think the third brought it back a little.

  • nope i still love it

  • 5e10 they suddenly have a hurricane that protects them when they all should have died, the priest deals with issues of faith (burning his collar), and basically the episode takes a random turn (or so I felt).

What's the christian audience thing about?

  • I disagree, I'm starting to think once The Governor arc finished it got kind of boring. I'm all for character development, but not just "oh, make this scene seem heartfelt then kill one of the characters in it"

After Frank Darabout was fired the show became garbage.

the show has never had amazing writing...I like it because I lenjoy zombie flicks and this one comes on weekly...and the 'christian theme'...Father Gabriel is in the comics so they didn't just throw him in there to appease religious viewers. I like the little nods to former characters and passed seasons...it shows that those characters haven't been forgotten by the group

  • LOL how would a hurricane protect them, HOLLYWOOD LOGIC BOGGLES MY MIND.

  • I still love this show, and this season is, imo, the best season since Season 1. Scott Gimple, the current showrunner, is much better than Glen Mazzerra who almost ruined this show, and Gimple follows the comics much more than he did. The show has slow episodes, but it's still an entertaining show.

Yes and I am assuming the majority of the people posting in this thread are probably not fans of the comic nor much of the TWD universe outside of the games.

The show is actually a lot better now that Gimple took over. He is not only following the comics closer than any of the previous showrunners but he has turned it into a psychological thriller to go along with the apocalyptic and zombie themes.

I can understand people who havn't read the comics scratching their head a bit as to what is going on now but it is all being taken directly from the graphic novels and some of the best storytelling is yet to come.

The trip up to Washington was a pretty slow part of the comics so it is no surprise episode 9 and 10 were slow as well (I as someone who like delving into the psychological aspects of the show enjoyed them though).

lots of zombie stuff has christian themes Iits because of this:

Zechariah 14:12“And the LORD will send a plague on all the nations that fought against Jerusalem. Their people will become like walking corpses, their flesh rotting away. Their eyes will rot in their sockets, and their tongues will rot in their mouths. On that day they will be terrified, stricken by the LORD with great panic. They will fight their neighbors hand to hand.”

Also, when there is no room left in hell the dead shall walk the earth. Plus other stuff

I've been enjoying this season so far. The episodes with the Termites where very exciting, Eugene's reveal was well done, the only problem I had with the first half was the Beth episodes.

As far as the second half goes I'd agree that their attempts at being artsy are really falling short, and sort of ruin the scenes they do that in, but I really liked the third episode, and if it keeps up along that style the season should get better. However, having read the comics with the next plotline coming up, I'm incredibly worried they'll make it to artsy/dull and misrepresent the next volume, but we shall see.

Regardless it's all up to personal opinion. I like the show and will continue to watch, others may not.

  • I think it's slowly getting better now. The whole prison flu stuff was beyond boring to me. I almost stopped watching. The only thing that I liked about season 4 (it was season 4 right, lol?) were the Governor-centric episodes. By far the worst season, in my opinion.

I still think the slowest part is to come for those who aren't into the internal/psychological or just character development. The next part coming with all the characters adjusting to Alexandria is very much along those lines.

I personally think it's a little much to say that the show "sucks" at this point... and this is coming from someone who didn't enjoy the past five episodes leading up to last Sunday's most recent episode. I really liked the first five episodes of this season, and I'm hopeful that this past episode has gotten things back on track (I personally thought the episode was quite good). Not sure how many more quality seasons the show has left in it, but as of right now I think it is still capable of putting great content out there.

Plus, all of a sudden "hey Christian audience, you can feel validated now, ever though we've had no strong religious themes before this.

I wouldn't say that these recent episodes have contained "strong religious themes" at all.

  • Soon it'll get better, it just has to. The characters that'll be revealed later in the series will be totally worth the watch... I hope.

  • Season 4 and 5 are really shit, the thing is only woods, woods, and woods, like TTG S2 bad written as well.

it is better now than what it was back in season 2 and in a few parts of season 3 plus they are only following the comics with all of the priest stuff

  • edited February 2015

Personally I think Season 1 was really good, 2 was boring as fuck, 3 was okay, 4 improved slightly and 5 is currently quite good.

I don't hate the show, but it never reached the level the comics and game did for me

There's something that just feels lost in the show; something the comics and game have that the TV show doesn't

The show's a bit of a wildcard. Sometimes they put out absolutely amazing episodes, then other times they just seem to lose all competence and put out an absolutely terrible episode. And to be fair, they've had quite a lot of problems with character consistency and overall writing at times. In fact, almost all the criticism aimed at S2 of the game is pretty much valid for the show as well.

It's not bad, but it's getting the silver/bronze metal while the game/comics get the gold

The sexual assault we're talking about is the thing with Merle and the Governor right? Cause I've forgotten basically everything that was Season 2 except the last two episodes and the Otis one.

So far it's all been 'Hey, think back to all those episodes and characters you used to like, think about those while we rest on our laurals'

The comics and game are not free of this either, coughSeason2andWeFindOurselvescough

    Herschel?

Just because it's a priest doesn't mean he doesn't appeal to non-Christian people. His turning away from God came appeal to a lot of people, religious or not, because it's him accepting that there is no hope essentially.

And fun fact, if any one brings this up. What happened in that storm is very possible. Tornadoes have destroyed houses but left the one just next door fine.

The show needs a lot more walkers and more interesting combat scenarios. This is why I thought the first season was the best.

Sorry about video quality but this is the best on edge of your seat moment in the TV show for me.

Im getting sick constantly seeing a handful of walkers come in one at a time and being simply handled by characters holding them then stabbing them in a single-file please kill me line. There needs to be more moments where walkers aren't always spread out.

  • There not exactly hard to kill unless theres multiple

  • It gets a lot of stupid hate over some stuff but other than the annoying number of filler episodes, the TV show is very good when its on its main story IMO.

  • That's exactly what I'm saying though. One of the big differences between the comic and video game compared to the TV show are the lack of walkers and creative close encounters with walkers.

  • AMC is the show's biggest problem. I think they purposely sandbag the story and make stingy decisions with the budget just so they can milk as much money out of this show as humanly possible. Reason why Darabount (sp?) left? AMC ordered Season 2 with twice as many episodes as Season 1, and 20% less budget money. That is fucking ridiculous.
