I'd say it's just much harder to make FEMALE characters (who aren't just 100% innocent/nice/'badass') likable. Nate and Carver are pretty vile men, but they get a lot more excusing and identifying with.
Thing is, in a black-comedy series like Borderlands I'd actually have no problem with Nate. It's when the games are intending for you to take things seriously where I fail to understand why people think he's not a bad guy.
