He's not crazy he's just a little unwell (A character analysis of Nate)

I wanted to give you my thoughts on Nate and my interpretation of his character. I know I've had defense threads but I wanted to go deeper into his character like Carver and The Stranger. I think he's an interesting character because people understand him in so many ways whether it be some evil or just a troubled trucker I find morally ambiguous characters the better ones. We're first introduced to him in Wyatt's story where he appears as a mysterious figure we don't know that much about. All we know of him is that Eddie killed his friend for a reason not very clear. Nate goes full throttle and is vicious and determined to hunt the two down, the group split up and he chases one of them down

He later re appears in Russel's story happy to have found another person that hasn't tried to mess with him. Having not properly interacted with another person for a while he comes off as odd and strange but overall is friendly or fond of Russell. Not covering him and the "rating a walker" game seemed to be obnoxious attempts to bust his balls. When they arrive at the gas station Nate sees Russell is mad and his attempts of making a friend have failed. When shot at Nate's survival serious mode kicks in and he begins thinking rationally and strategically and the time for play is over

Nate and Russell team up and Nate trusts Russell with his gun. Even if Russell chooses to determinately threaten Nate with it Nate seems more hurt than angry and still covers Russell where most people at that point would have just pushed him into the line of fire. He even saves his life later on and forgives him for doing it. Once on the inside they plan on sneaking up on the shooters which later turn out to be old people who are both in very bad condition a woman is shot through the stomach and the old man is on the verge of a heart attack and had gone crazy, in the condition they were in the supplies they had probably may not have worked and would just be a waste Nate guns both of them diwn in a flash

In the end people are quick to just dismiss him as a rapist and evil. I think he has antisocial personality traits and when faced with danger the fear inside him makes his head kick into a gear that its hard to get out of we've seen it with Wyatt and Eddie and when he was shot at. As seen with Russell he comes off the wrong way because he hasn't had a conversation for god know's when and is re learning the ropes of social interaction. I think he cared for Russell and wanted to draw him in and impress him with the bad ass act and killing the two old people. I noticed how people in the game who kill someone with a genuine grudge look them in the eyes prior he looked away which leads me to believe he didn't enjoy it as much as we're lead to think

Nate feels like a character that should be in an Adult Swim show. He's so hacky and too ridiculously crass for something about the human condition and enduring the worse of the inner-psyche.

It'd be like watching Platoon with Donald Duck. It just doesn't fit the tone.

  • Holy Nate, he is immortal!

  • See, I don't think Nate is "ha ha" funny as much as "why does he exist in this world" funny.

  • So Daffy Duck comic relief in a fucked up ZA? Don't get me wrong it would be fucking funny but I don't know how believable.

  • Nate is basically Daffy Duck already.

I'm surprised he doesn't have a cartoony catch phrase he can exploit.

  • I wonder what's Nate's end goal is? Just seems to try and kill people in the episodes he is in, not even worried about the zombies. A man that is looking for revenge to anyone that crosses him. I doubt a community will let him in and he seems to just drive around (amazing he still has gas).

  • Nates cool, His rage at a dumb stoner murderer and his druggy friend and two attempted killer oldies doesnt bother me at all. Plus hes entertaining at least

  • Nate: is a cracked-up, "rack"-lovin', sociopathic, not scared of anything S.O.B..

    Interesting indeed.

  • Nah, he's crazy.

  • I always love the option of drawing on Nate.
What he says feels real and genuine.

I thought we were gonna have fun adventures with him and drive down to Russell's Gram's house.
But no, even after he killed the old people and I chose the "Stay with Nate" option, Russell had to be a bitch about it.

  • Did you see his eye's? The man's "gorked".

  • Nate has problems and can't associate with people. He has an addictive personality, which most people that abuse substances have a underlying mental condition. I would guess PTSD with associative brain injury. How his mood switches from friendly, to angry in a light switch. I would say he isn't as bad as "Kenny." because he never beat anyone to death with a crowbar.

  • I found out gorked means a rage period while you're high

I'd say Carver fits more into the "doesn't fit the tone." Carver is a walking cartoon villain while Nate actually seems like a crazy person you'd come across in the apocalypse. Troy is a close second at being a stupid cartoon as well.

  • Honestly, most characters in season two were pretty cartoony.

  • Troy was fucking hilarious though lol. But yeah compared to a fleshed out character like The Stranger Carver is cartoony

I think the Russian group takes the cake for 'biggest one-dimensional cartoony villains' but Troy is a close second.
