Do You Like Kenny?

For me I initially developed a rather sour opinion of him towards the end of Season 1, because I chose to back Lilly and thought Kenny was too emotionally impulsive to be a leader, but as a result I can remember at least two occasions where Kenny left Lee to die (determinant of course).
I also gravely disliked his hypocrisy at how he completely refused to acknowledge Duck's condition, after he spared no thought at killing Larry (I hated Larry but even I didn't want to kill him before making sure he was truly dead).

But in Season 2 I developed a new opinion towards him, gradually feeling increasingly sad for his situation, at one point even torn between siding with him or Luke. I understood why he was acting the way he was, since I knew his character backstory from Season 1 and that made it difficult for me to hate Kenny but I was appalled at how monstrous he had become in the end and confused when he showed a warmer side with AJ who gave him hope.

When it came down to choosing between Kenny or Jane, I looked away and let him kill Jane but afterwards shot Kenny, though I did come to regret doing that. In the Wellington ending I found myself gaining a newfound respect for Kenny and how he recognized his own shortcomings and knew it was better for Clem and AJ to stay in Wellington without him (not that I actually took that option).

So, I've been curious as to the character reception of Kenny, is it like a marmite situation where a large portion of gamers hate him but an equally large group love him, or is he generally disliked by most or seen favourably by the majority of gamers?

  • I'm neutral with the guy. At times I get along with him other times I get pissed at him. I don't always follow Kenny's ideas.

In season 1 it depends he can be either your best friend or you can both hate each other as far as Kenny willing to leave Lee behind and not take him on a boat (but you know "choices dont matter")... i personally liked Kenny in s1, the only problem i had with was when Duck was bitten.. season 2 was kinda all over the place, especially with characters so i didnt really feel bad for any characters that Kenny was being a meanie to.. in my first playtrough ive stuck with him till the end...

On the fanboyism, from what ive seen its pretty split beetween kenny and jane, i dunno...

i dont really hate Jane but for me its still:

Yep. My third favorite character in the game.

  • I love Kenny, I get why others don't like him, but to me, he's always been a great guy trying to do what's best for his family and the people he considers family.

  • Wait, blowing someone's brains out all over a playground isn't a sign of love towards another person. Huh, I have to reconsider my love life.

  • alittle hot headed but overall a good guy.

I dislike him, purely because he has been the only character to irk me. That doesn't mean I hate him or believe he deserves death, just means I don't personally like him.

  • I liked Kenny. In Season 1 there was some things I didnt agree with him on but not so much season 2, but overall Kenny was always a friend to me

    Well, that's good.

I changed my original post cause I can't read properly today.

  • Yes. I'll leave it at that.

  • I used to like him a lot, but after he yelled at Clem in Amid The Ruins I was completely over him. I ended up shooting Kenny but kinda regretted it even though I despise him so much, I feel Jane is worse.

  • nope least favorite character in the franchise

  • This

alittle hot headed but overall a good guy.

  • For me, he's a likeable asshole. Yeah, an asshole that is likeable.

  • The most simple answer for me is;

In S1, yes. In S2, not really, no.

  • Your comment is perfect, I'm going to make it my bio.

  • I felt I was closer to S2 Kenny. Kenny was a good friend, well what can be considered a good friend. I left Wellington with him, but Kenny is not a personal favorite of mine. I actually liked Jane more and had the choice not been life or death, I would've chosen to leave with Jane. I just felt killing Kenny was such a betrayal to him in that moment. I wasn't expecting Jane to die, but I didn't want to shoot Kenny.

  • I did not agree with the guy in S1 on the majority of choices he wanted to make, but I knew where he was coming from and his family was good people so I never hated him even going into S2, just a little cautious when the game was playing out. The second he wanted out of Carver's camp I was completely agreeable and I knew I had an ally on my side.

After that it was nothing but either butting heads or pity until episode 5 heading to Wellington choice. I'm glad Telltale made such a controversial character that people could hate or sympathize with, cause without him TWD would be boring as hell.

  • That hot headed son of a bitch can be hard to like.

But yeah, I liked him. Through both seasons.

  • I like the guy. Sure, he has his flaws, but who doesn't? He is a complex character who I have enjoyed knowing. Yeah there were times when i got pissed off with him, particularly when he was so selfish in the first season. But overall, he is a character who is very well written.

  • Absolutely. I played S1 as his best friend. When we had to leave him it was almost as awful as putting down Lee. When I wrapped Clem's arms around him at the cabin, I said I would stick with him until the end, and despite TT's best efforts to change my mind, I did. Sorry, Jane. That was a stupid way to make a point though, girl.

  • He's one of the few things that kept me playing season 2 after episode 2

he has his flaws, but who doesn't?

This phrase has alluded me by many Kenny fans... Care to elaborate what his "flaws" are? I know quite a few (a shit-ton), but what do you think they are... besides him being hotheaded and sometimes bossy? Cause I've only heard those two so far and it seems a lot of people disregard the other thousand.

    Bossy.

    Bossy.

and sometimes says some mean things that he doesnt actually mean.

    Hotheaded.

These are only slight variations on the original two example I gave. Although, at least you acknowledge that he has shitty characteristics.

  • I don't see any of his other flaws then, i apoligize

all that i listed were the only things i saw as flaws in him, and even then i agree with a lot of his decision making

    Do I like Kenny?

    No. For both seasons.

  • Kenny pre-apocalypse - yes, though his racism is a problem; we'd have to have a chat about that.

    Kenny post-apocalypse - heeeeeeellll no.

  • Yes and no.

I like Kenny when he is being cool.

I dislike Kenny when he is being stubborn.

But overall he was ok. I didn't despise him like some characters.

  • Did you let him kill Jane?

  • Nah although I would've if I knew she was lying.

Did you let him kill Jane?

  • Would you have shot him after let him kill Jane?

I'm sorry if I ask so many questions, I just love learning stuff about people's playthroughs.

  • Probably not, I would have no reason to. The entire reason I did it in the first place cause I thought he was going to kill her over AJ.
