Did Kenny actually forgive Ben?

When I finished season 1, this seemed to be the case. But during season 2 Kenny regrets mercy killing Ben, nominates Arvo as the new shitbird and beats the crap out of him every chance he gets.In season 2 Kenny was quite vicious, I don't think Arvo deserved getting beaten up half the time. I got the feeling that he was still harboring resentment against Ben, and wreaked his anger on Arvo. Let's face it they kind of looked similar. They were around the same age, and both of them had similar hair styles.

What is your opinion on this?

I don't think he nessacarily 'forgave' him but I believe he was working towards moving past it who knows maybe if Ben survived Kenny would've eventually forgave him. I don't think he regrets it when he said "For some reason I tried to save that fucking shitbird Ben" I think he meant that to this day he doesn't know why he tried to save him. At the time I don't think he knew then either he just knew that he had to try to save him. You may remember when the group found the couple that had commited suicide he gave a speech about how no matter how hard it gets you help the people you care about and never give up "You don't just end it cause it's hard you stick it out and you help the folks you care about". I believe that's what he meant when he said "Me and my fucking mouth" after Ben fell he knew that he had to try save him.

Well he knew that after he said that, had he'd not done anything, he would've shown himself to be a hypocrite.
So part of his doing what he did, was to save-face with the others.
Though that is not to say that his motives were completely selfish.

For example, when Ben, his school teacher, and his classmate were in trouble, Kenny held off the walkers with his rifle as long as possible, while Lee did what he could to free the injured man.
And then Kenny became outraged when Larry stated that they should've left Ben's group behind.
    So Kenny wasn't heartless!
He did try to good toward others, but his first priority was Katja and Duck, and then later Clementine, Aj, and Sarita.

  • No, Kenny's thing about Arvo had nothing to do with Ben.
Arvo's gang tried to slaughter the entire group!
So with that being said, is it any wonder why Kenny had it out for Arvo?

  • Did Kenny forgive Ben?

I don't know if he truly forgave him, but after hearing Ben's story, in that moment of him being trapped, maybe it was just the father in him, but for whatever reason, Kenny empathized with Ben. Now some year and half later, after he's had time to reflect on everything he can see how illogical it was for him to have attempted what he did.

but on Kenny calling Ben a shitbird...it comes across as Kenny insulting Ben, but that's just how Kenny is...in In Harm's Way, when they're are discussing getting Luke a radio, Kenny says to "get that terd a radio"....so Kenny referring to Ben as shitbird does not necessarily mean that Kenny did not forgive Ben

  • Pretty sure, he went in there knowing he'd die (even though he didn't) trying to save him.

  • I can't tell but Arvo DID deserve to be beaten. Arvo and Ben are differents. Ben made mistakes, he didn't mean to do that, he was trying to help. Arvo is the stupidest boy I ever met. I didn't take his shit, he still accuses me for stealing and blames Clem for his sister's death when he was the one who got her killed. Arvo deserves pain. He needs to die.

I don't think he would have given Ben a quick death if he hadn't forgiven him. Even though he calls him a shitbird again in season 2, I don't think he regretted putting him out of his misery.

As for Arvo, he was just a punching bag for Kenny to vent all his anger and frustration on. I doubt Kenny related him to Ben.

  • Though he called Ben a shitbird in A House Divided, the way he said it seemed more calm and passive, like it was a humorous nickname for him rather than an insult.

  • He kind of forgave Ben ....but I think there is no way that Kenny would forgive Arvo because he almost killed clementine and the baby and he got so mad at Arvo that he won't forgive him, he even shot clementine and made Kenny go way more crazy, I bet if Kenny saw him, he would for sure torture him so bad.

  • No, Kenny isn't the forgiving type of person.

  • I always thought Kenny didn't know what drove him to go save Ben to this day, and uses shitbird as a humorous name for Ben.

Come on, does anyone really not find the word shitbird funny? XD

  • I find it funny. Strangely, I have never heard of that cuss word before. I felt kind of bad when Kenny disrespected Ben's memory further calling him a shitbird after his death.

  • Kenny losing his family was just all a coincidence. The bandits would have still came and raided in.

Uh, I don't think he forgave him.

But I do think he made peace with his role in Katjaa and Duck's death. At the very least the way he mentions Ben if he survived Crawford in Season 2 didn't seem like he still held deep resentment against him.

I don't think he fully forgave Ben, but I do think at the very least he accepted/made his peace with what happened

I never really took his shitbird line in S2 as an actual insult. I felt it was said in a more endearing, playful way, IE "I love that stupid son of a bitch"

Also, as a side-note, I saw his "sacrifice" in S1 being a legitimate attempt to save Ben, for what it's worth. He didn't want to just shoot him or leave him, he wanted to actually get him off that spike to safety. He only mercy killed him when he realized that it was hopeless and that there was no way to save him. Kenny's willingness to actually want to save him convinces me that some small part of him actually did forgive Ben, even if wasn't entirely.

  • I never knew the answer.
