There should be an option to turn off dialogue timer

edited July 2015 in The Walking Dead

Currently you can work around this by pausing the game, but it would be better if it was an option built into it.

I prefer to deliberate over my choices instead of being rushed and potentially choosing something I don't like, which is why I bring this up.

What about you?

  • Well silence is a valid option and it isn't always there to be selected.

There are scenes were it wouldn't make sense (i.e. action scenes)

  • That'd take the realism out of it honestly. having a timer makes the player pick the very first decision that comes on their mind. Rushing actually kind of makes the game realistic and much more exciting.

  • The timer is necessary, it keeps the story moving at a good pace, it makes the decision of what to do much harder, and if it wasn't there, you would literally just be standing there while others around you are thinking "What the hell are you doing?" In fact, I never knew how much I liked having the timer there until I saw gameplay of Life is Strange, which doesn't have the timer on it and you literally have all the time in the world to make a decision, which slows the game down and can make a situation feel awkward as you stand there and make your decision. As you said, you have the start button to pause the game, just use that if you need more time.

  • Just press space bar to pause the game. Still, the timer makes the scenarios where you need to make a hard choice feel more intense.

  • I prefer to deliberate over my choices instead of being rushed and potentially choosing something I don't like

The point of the timer is to rush you, to get that first choice out of you before you can think it over. I think it's a great mechanic in Telltale's games.

  • If your pausing at every choice and/or rewinding every scene you didn't like the outcome for, your doing it wrong.

  • Right, I just prefer making choices that I've thought about instead of being rushed.

  • I do prefer thinking it over, but it's way more interesting and fun to just make a decision in the heat of the moment just as the way Telltale intended.

  • Walkers wouldn't wait while you're thinking to say something.

  • The timer makes it more realistic.

  • You don't get that option all the time in real life.

I can imagine a walker impatiently tapping it's foot, arms crossed, as it waits for you to decide what weapon to use on it

Truth is that everybody, including people like OP, would probably have no problem answering fast enough if the same things would have been asked to them in real life. That's because it's not the same when we know we can say absolutely whatever we want compared to when we have to choose what to say from just 2-4 things with the threat that if you don't answer fast enough we won't say a thing, we don't bother thinking about what we're going to say cause we know that we can only wait and see what kind of choices the game will give us and only then we can think. So yeah it doesn't have much to do with 'realism'. I do like the timer and don't think it should be removed, but I pause a lot myself.

You don't get that option all the time in real life.

  • It's not the same. I explained it in a reply above, you can check it if you want. You don't really think people like the OP have everyday problems of difficulty in choosing what they say/do do you ?

  • Not everyone plays games for realism guys, damn. I agree with OP, although I would never use it.

  • I agree that the timer can be really annoying sometimes (especially if your game decides to lag during dialogue), but overall I like it. It adds a bit of realism, and it gives you a sense of urgency. Though it definitely makes things more difficult for some, myself included, who have difficulty choosing things.

  • Bump. Any other thoughts on this?

  • Why even play Telltale at all if you want to skip the whole thing it's about?

  • There are plenty of other things to play Telltale games for; I like the story and characters and taking time to make decisions, for example. The timer is pretty low on my list of important Telltale features.

  • You wouldn't play anymore Telltale games if they didn't have a timer for conversations?

Lol I can picture someone waiting for you to say something. "Rhys, are you... okay?" Rhys stares into their soul "O_O waves hand infront of face"

Edit : glitch making comment appear as spoiler o.o

  • Ah....I thought I was replying to a different thread. Oops. That's what I get for leaving several threads open at a time and leaving the house for the day.

No. Leave the timer for the BIG decisions. Like the final decision in the Walking Dead season two. (Shoot or look away) Leave it for when you need and immediate decision within the moment, but remove it for just ordinary conversation.

I think so, or at least the option to turn it on/off. Giving the player options should be always encouraged. Also i feel it would be more realistic to not have a timer because I don't have a timer when i am talking to someone in RL, i usually think about what i am going to say then say it.

  • The timer is literally what made the game so special. Because it was like being in a real conversation or situation. It's essentially Telltale's brand-defining feature now.

If you want something, go play Life is Strange or, you know, every single interactive story adventure game ever made in history including the whole Telltale catalog before 2012.

  • I really enjoy telltale but the timer is a major put off as I have dislexia and can't read that well it can be a little annoying so yeah its help with the dialogue parts but it should be kept on the action scenes
