I played ME only once, so I bet someone else who is more into Mass Effect lore would be able to help you. :P It's just that you'll miss a great character in ME 2 (and in ME 3, especially in Citadel DLC) if you play straight away, which makes me sad, cuz he's awesome. :I

Probably around 8-9. Mass Effect 2 is teh best Mass Effect.
