Ludd and Gryff - who is the better villain?

edited April 2016 in Game Of Thrones

There's been plenty of discussion on which Whitehill is best to kill, but I'm interested to know which of the two you consider the best villain, and why?

For me, it's close, but I would go with Ludd. The fact scenes with him are always a lord-vs-lord affair make it even better, in my opinion. Gryff just doesn't have the same presence and gravitas, even though he's a brilliantly written character in his own right.. and he's certainly hateful, especially after the end of episode 5.

What do you think?

  • Most people think that Gryff is worst then Ludd (which I think is true).

  • Ludd was the better villain. While Gryff is a sack of shit, it was Lard who was the mastermind of everything.

  • Definitely Gryff. Ludd was the guy in charge and the mastermind but Gryff is such a great character and was almost always in the front lines (meataphorically). I think I'd definitely prefer him with Rodrik alive and maimed. Every scene with Gryff and Rodrik was so fantastic. They have chemistry in a good rivalry sort of way.

  • They do.

My canon save is Rodrik and maimed Gryff :D

  • I'd have to say Ludd. He's calculating and intelligent but such a loudmouth and a coward that you just love to hate him.

  • Same.

  • I love to hate 'em both, but Ludd.

  • They both suck.

  • Gryff is like a guy punching your face. He's annoying and he hurts, but he's not long lasting. He's not clever, nor subtle, Gryff doesn't have the cunning of Ludd.

Ludd is more like a guy who waits until you're turned around before he punches you. He's a clever, ruthless, intelligent man, and that makes him a better villain in my eyes.

  • Gryff, he is like a kid angry at you just because he is jealous and had envy of your house. Ludd is a pathetic fat man, he is just bad because he want to look rude, Gwyn even says that he fears Asher, instead Gryff is just... sick, like Joffrey.

  • Or Gryff is a dumb jock kind of bully that gives you a wedgie, while Ludd is a savvy frat kind of bully that provokes you and uses admiration-hungry dumb-dumbs for human proxy so you can't even blame him for shit in front of Principal Ramsay.

  • Me too, with Sentinel Royland.

  • Ludd was the better villain, he's cold, calculating and surprisingly decent in a fight. He was the head of the Whitehill family and the cause of all of the Forresters' problems. However, despite me preferring him as a villain and character, for those reasons I killed him as he was a greater threat to the Forresters down the road.

Gryff was a great villain as well in terms of hate but he also wasn't a massive threat in my eyes. He just seemed like some guy with an inferiority complex because he was a fourth born son and I already maimed him. His death scene (which I saw after I beat Episode 6) shows how absolutely pathetic he is in my eyes and how he likes to talk big but can't actually back it up with his combat skills. His pride will be elevated even more when I kill him in Season 2 since he conquered Ironrath. The bigger the pride the harder the fall.

  • They were both one dimensional imo. They had some depth to them in episode 4 but that was short lived as they were later shown to just be goofy. I did think Gryff's VA did an excellent job at portraying him so him

I dont think they were one dimensional overall, their backstory is apparently being lower than the forresters and being jealous (gryff especially being the youngest) as such they are vain and love rubbing our faces in everything.

They did push it a bit with Ludd almost mutilating ryon and alike but still they wernt that one dimensional.

I mean when you consider how cruel book/show characters can be without seeing their thoughts they appear one dimensional

  • That's what they sort of reminded me of. Most of the time they were just written ridiculously evil with no particular likable qualities. The thing in ASOIAF/GOT when you're presented with houses (Lannister, Stark etc) there are characters who are written to be likable or unlikable so even if you hate a house there's at least one good apple in a batch of rotten ones. All the Forresters were written as your normal good guys as the Whitehills were written as bad guys

For which was the better villain, I'd pick Gryff. He's one of the best-written characters in the entire game; through his actions and subtle hints in dialogue, the player can easily piece together his motivations and even his backstory. You feel like you know him to a certain degree, and you know why he's doing all this to the Forresters. Plus he's more of an aggressor than his father is, working directly inside ironrath, which makes the conflict between him and the family seem more natural. Ludd just seems far less interesting in comparison. Sadly enough Gryff is dead in my "Canon" save file so I'll never get to develop his relationship with Asher any more. Maybe Ludd will get a bit more nuanced in S2, tho....
