I have one thing I need to comment on.
Norma's death. Norma's goddamn death. Especially if you let her get eaten.
I don't care what anyone else says, that was easily one of the most brutal and disturbing deaths in the game for me. Hell, maybe one of the most disturbing deaths of the entire TWD franchise, even. I thought that fucking flare gun death was bad enough.
Does berto die no matter what?
From what I've gathered, he does.
I'm looking at how different choices play out, and I'm a little bit bummed out, if not disappointed. From what I've gathered:
Berto will always die. He's either shot by Jonas out of revenge, or shot by Gabby.
Randall will always die, prompting Norma to attack (if you 'killed' him, it turns out the blow to the head wasn't enough to finish the job, so he reanimates, and you put a bag over his head and act like he's still alive. It's Holly all over again.)
Zachary will die even if you saved him. He attacks Norma in an attempt to save you, and she just turns around and shoots him without hesitation
Paige, Sam, Alex and James survive
Chances are Oak dies no matter what as well. It's a shame, they had the chance to really make the choices matter here, I think.
Sam is determinant, she can die if Michonne chooses to stay in the burning house with her daughters while she hallucinates.
And Oak can survive, though I don't exactly know how he can, and I'm not sure if you can see him in the finale.
Oaks alive in my game
What happens to Michonne if she stays in the building with her daughters, considering her plot armor? Michonnes daughters bugged me a lot through the episode, they were just horribly annoying and the game forced you to follow nothing like an idiot, I don't know how bored you'd have to be to stay with them. Also bloody Oak his death was a sad sight.
That's nice to hear, a fellow British fella surviving in the Walking Dead universe. Cheers!
Oh, well in that case, that's cool. Still wish Berto could have made it out. And Zachary, too (maybe not join our crew, but actually survive as opposed to dying like literally every other determinant character. With all due respect, would it kill Telltale to have a determinant character just end up unknown instead?)
As for everyone else that dies, it makes sense, now that I think about it. Randall dying is a given, since it's made pretty clear that he was going to cause trouble no matter if he's alive or (un)dead. Norma dying also makes sense, since she's obviously not going to let anyone walk away after Randall is killed. Not to mention that they're both the antagonists, and every primary/main antagonist in TWD franchise has died (with the sole exception of one), so yeah.
Michonne stays a little longer with her hallucinations, causing Sam to physically drag her out of her episode and push her out of the house through the window, but Sam doesn't have enough time to get herself out and collapse through the burning floor, killing her. In this case, Michonne is indirectly responsible for her death by not learning to let go sooner.
And yeah, I have to agree that this episode were rather ham-fisted with Michonne's hallucinations, they just came across as more of an annoyance than anything.
Seems the time restraints they just killed everyone off in a second from Norma's team. Keeping Randall alive meant pretty much nothing.
Shades of season two again.
Personally I'm growing tired of Telltale's current story-telling formula at this point, especially when the finale could have been more diverse with how choices matters and with multiple outcomes, and especially when the mini-series can be considered to be a standalone.
More could have been done with the project that could have been a well-done teaser of what to expect in Season 3, but instead the mini-series feels and works more like a watered-down Season 2.
What happens if you trade zombified Randall to Norma? To the point where she removes the bag I mean
My faith in Telltale when it comes to choices tends to go back and forth.
On one hand, they do some promising stuff now and again; the handling of Pete in episodes 2 and 3 of Michonne, a fair majority of TFTB, the determinant protagonists in GoT, the handling of Finn in episode 4 of GoT... But on the other hand, you have all these unavoidable deaths and situations that always play out the same no matter what you do, or characters just outright forgetting what you've said/done to them before. I mean look, I can understand why sometimes a character you can save will end up dying anyways, but a lot of the time it feels like they kill them off solely because they don't know what else to do with them, or some other asinine reason. Pete in S2 dying no matter what actually made some narrative sense given his predicament, but then there's Sarah and Nick, who they just killed off because... I don't even know why, honestly.
Shit hits the fan before she gets to remove it, Sam just shoots him.
I guess Telltale really wanted to make the negotiation event as linear as possible narrative-wise.
Randal is alive? Sam shoots him as he tries to run off. Randal is a walker? Sam shoots him before he gets anywhere near Norma.
I can't believe that they killed off both Norma and Randall! The most interesting original characters of this series! Also couldn't you have made Berto live if we didn't kill Zach? Gabby killing him felt so forced! Instead of that cheap Zachary death...
Norma killed him on my game
Really? Norma kills Randal? Seems a little out-of-character.
Unless you meant Walker!Randal.
Yeah walker Randall
Since I've seen Sam shoot Randal (both alive and walker) in two scenarios, what needs to be done for Norma to do the deed?
Make the trade successfully
Cheers. I'll be looking up how it all plays out if the trade is done successfully.
You know what's funny? This is weirdly similar to the GoT finale when you think about it. On your first time through, it almost looks like they went all-out with choices, a bunch of people can live or die. Then you realize that it's actually pretty linear, and most people end up dead no matter what you do.
Furthermore:
Person saved in first episode attempts to save your life and is immediately killed (Zachary and Bowen/Erik)
One relative dies, pissing the other one off and causing them to attack (Randall and Norma, Gryff and Ludd)
Assault on a fortified building after the gate is forced open (John's house and its gate, Ironrath and its gate)
One person always dies no matter what you do (Berto and Elissa/Amaya)
Two kids that are part of the main family survive no matter what (Alex and James, Talia and Ryon)
Characters escape as the building burns (John's House, Ironrath)

Seven Point Five Flames Out Of Ten.
I'm disappointed with at they handled the negotiation. I would've rather been right and have this be how it is, but it's still okay nonetheless. I like that they finally established personality for some of the minor Monroe ex-inhabitants, like Gabby. Norma not giving a shit for Gabby and Zachary, two who have been hinted at being of the earliest members of her community, seemed out of character to me. Can't be the only one.
In the end, Norma died either way at our hands. I don't know how I feel about that. If I was given the choice, I would've… I don't know… left the fight at some point. Her death was fucking horrific. Horrible. The most violent I recall. I was disgusted by it. That woman really didn't deserve it, especially considering that we burned her community down and that Sam had in fact stolen the bags.
Which leads me to, Sam started this whole mess up, this time it's confirmed!
Telltale didn't provide closure about Sam's and Paige's relationship, nor it did about what the hell happened to Dominic, Elodie and Colette, which was the deep purpose of this miniseries. Nor it did mention Ezekiel. Nor it did take into account #DoorOrPhone2k16!
Oh, and we killed the entirety of Monroe in about a day!
It was an alright finale. They didn't do as much as they could've, but without any previous expectation, it would've been a lot better in my eyes. Questionable writing decisions.
Looking back at it, there are a lot of positive aspects that I didn't consider when I first wrote this review. I'm giving 'What We Deserve' a 7.5/10 instead of 6.5/10.
Did Walker Randall managed to deliver any damage to someone before Norma killed him?
And what happens to Oak in this scenario?
If you signal Paige to shoot Norma oak lives
Flinches eyes narrowly.
What the hell…?
Re-reads comment.
How is that possible? …oh, right. Oak's alive in my playthrough, too. That guy's such a helpful member of the crew, and a great person, too. I'm glad I saved him.
Seriously, what happens in the case that Oak lives? Would you mind explaining how the rest of the episode goes? Thank you, in advance.
I found a playthrough in which Oak lives, like @zeke10 said before. Figured I'd let all of you know so that you can see it for yourselves. I'm sure I like this route better.
who even names these
Lmao of course it's in Dutch.
I personally don't know Dutch, but I understood what happened either way. It might be difficult for some of those who are not native speakers, though.
In the video, Randall was alive, though...
He was dead in my game
Yeah, I wanna see a video where the trade is made and Randall is a walker.
So the video doesn't work? You hurt my feelings!
Runs away crying.
I guess I'm in the minority here. I thoroughly enjoyed the episode. It seems you can hub in the house a bit a see a little more of it. I think Michonne's hallucinations fit well as they get more intense and life like as the situation get more dangerous. Everything fit fine with an appropriate length to tell the story. It's not an Oscar award winning episode, but I'll gladly give it 8/10, a solid B grade, a 3.0 on the TellTale GPA. I'm satisfied.
Fuck I got Oak killed. Fuck.
Embargo's up. If you're so ever curious, here are my choices. My video won't be up for another hour or two, so try to stay content with the Dutch. ;D
NOTE: I killed Randall in episode 2, just in case you were curious.
But what about the most important thing in the episode, IS OAK ALIVE.
