Finally got round to completing Michonne, quick thoughts

edited July 2016 in The Walking Dead

Okay so I just finished this a couple nights ago:

  1. My biggest fear turned to be true - Michonne is not an interesting character, quite boring actually like her TV counterpart. I didn't care about the flashbacks either or how often they appeared, felt like they kept hammering that theme over and over like we didn't get it the first time. They never should have chosen this character to focus on.

  2. Her crew wasn't that interesting either and I didn't care much about them.

  3. The action was pretty good. I liked when Michonne and Pete entered the boat and got into trouble with the 2 groups.

  4. I tried to leave with Paige at the end and even said as much to Sam, but then Michonne just kinda.. stayed. Annoying when the game removes your choice like that without good reason.

Overall I found the game just okay. I liked being the WD universe again and the action was good. The story was whatever but that's okay because it's only 3 episodes so I didn't expect much. Mostly though I didn't care much about the characters, and therefore didn't care much about the events that happen to them - Michonne, Pete, Norma, etc, I just didn't feel connection or interest in these people. Off the top of my head, Sam and Paige are the only characters I wouldn't mind seeing again.

Mostly I'm looking forward to Season 3 now because I like playing as Clem. Can't wait to see her a bit older and better able to handle herself.

  • I think that the three biggest mistakes are:

    • The story was forced. Why did Norma hate you so much, even before you burned Monroe? Why do Michonne care so much about the Fairbanks? Why can't we just solve it all in a paceful way and walk away? They forced us to side with Sam, antagonized Norma too much, whe she is actually the most similar character to Rick in the game, I think.
    • Three episodes, for three parts of the story: begining (the characters are presentaded, the antagonist shows up at the end of this part, as well as the main goal is established), conflict (a lot of character development and action to keep the player interested until the ending) and ending (the protagonist either achieve their goal or fails). Episode 1 was the begining, Episode 2 was the conflict and Episode 3 was the ending. But in the conflict, we need to get to know more deeply the characters, and the other two main characters (Pete, as deuteragonst, and Sam, as tritagonist) are practically absent during most of the episode (Pete in Monroe/doing nothing and Sam unconscious). That makes character development difficult.
    • Not nessesary. Why did we need a Michonne Miniseries? a Magna Miniseries would have been better.

  • I agree with most of your thoughts, still, this series presented us good action and nicely filled Michonne's gap during that time in the comics.

  • a Magna Miniseries would have been better.

It would have been the same. I mean, I felt like I played as an antagonist in this game. Norma wasn't a bad person (Her brother surely was), I destroyed her home and her family and I was forced to be on Fairbanks' side.

  • I completely agree with you.

Someone else made a thread saying there should have been more choices, like being able to negotiate your way out of the situation at the end. Things like that would make the story feel less forced.

  • I mean, with Magna about to do something useful, why not a videogame explaining her story?

  • I never read the comics but I did hear about Magna.

  • New character that is going to become important but didn't do shit 'til now.

  • I actually found her interesting, like the comic book character she was based on.

She is a prominent character in Dwight's militia, if that counts.

  • I loved the miniseries, except the daughters. That was handled good in episode one, but it happened too damn much, so frequently that I stopped caring.

    Everything else I loved.

  • I tried to leave with Paige at the end and even said as much to Sam, but then Michonne just kinda.. stayed. Annoying when the game removes your choice like that without good reason.

I also tried to leave, but I didn't care. It's not like she decided to stay, but rather she got caught up in the fight that she was trying to avoid.

    Life is like that sometimes.

  • I could understand most of your criticisms except for Michonne's character being boring. I have to competely disagree with that statement I found her better than both her TV and comic book counter part.

  • I think, if anything, they should've at least made Norma determinant.

  • Um, comic book and game are the same.

  • I know that. I'm just saying Telltale did a better job with Michonne's personality than Kirkman imo.
