Jane's interactions with Clementine

Now let me start off by saying that Jane was a great and complex character that was hard to figure out and to know what her motives were.

Now maybe i'm just reading too far into it but after replaying season 2 numerous times, I started to realise that there might have been some deeper (and perhaps sinister!!) mind games in a lot of Jane's interactions with Clementine (depending on the players choices). I'm too lazy to go through all their interactions but there were times where it seemed that way, like Clementine not really giving her position away and being in the middle when Jane mentions the group falling apart and what not. A
another example is the nail file thing when Jane decides to leave after Rebecca has the baby. You take it, is that a sign of trust and respect or just Clementine letting Jane think that? How sad was Clementine really after Jane left?

Not to turn this into a Kenny vs Jane thread but one thing that would prove me right is if Clementine agrees with Jane for all/most of the game and then ultimately goes with Kenny at the end. That would be the ultimate betrayal and would prove that the two were never really that close as either of them let on. So how close do you think Jane and Clementine really were? Feel free to point out any other strange, double meaning interactions between the two.

  • Jane isn't really complex. On the contrary, she's flatter than three day old soda.

  • I think how close Clementine and Jane were primarily depends on the player's dialogue/action choices towards her - in other words I feel it's a determinant relationship.

  • -Contradicting motivations and goals.

    -Unbelievable character arc.

-Idiotic decision making skills for a self-proclaimed survivalist.

-Largely exists to conflict with Kenny.

-Extremely one-dimensional once the season finale's focal point was fixed on AJ.

-Forced relationship with Clementine as her fourth mentor (cause I guess Clem needs people less capable than her telling her how to survive.)

-Other nit-pics (incredibly well-kempt considering she isn't above smearing walker guts on herself. Like she literally wears mascara which I'm not sure where she gets it from. Relatively bland and clichéd backstory with not enough meat to warrant it as a real design. And I thought for the longest time, she was Molly using "Jane" as some covert nameplate... I'm fucking dead serious.)

  • I disagree, I think Jane is one of the most complex characters in the series, considering how she thinks it's better to do things one way but due to some circumstances, she does things differently and goes out of her own comfort zone to do so.

  • I'm not someone who would consider a character complex just because they often take on two different extremes in a contradictory way only to evoke player reaction.

She's a bitter jaded survivalist, then she finds it in her heart to help others because she is supposed to. She's for investing herself in training a child who doesn't really need it, then she wants her to be her own savior for reasons not made clear and one's I highly doubt the writers knew. She's a vapid space occupied by a thinly disguised "Follow" Call of Duty marker, just with poorly implemented choices acting as placeholders.

She's a herd leader, not really a character.

Fascinating. I initially thought she was Lilly myself since we didn't get a close up shot until late in Episode 3.

I wouldn't calm her well-kempt, though: her hair is noticeably dark brown, short, and spiky. Her weird police-esque uniform is a dark shade of orange and has signs of dirtiness and dark smears. Honestly, she probably smells like shit and I'm surprised Luke would wanna stick it in that.

    Also, she's wearing mascara?

Mascara AND eyeliner in fact. It's roughly two or so years into a worldwide zombie apocalypse and people are still finding time to primp themselves for the undead? Or is it that she needs to have some sort of psychical appeal to more easily influence gamers' expectations? Either way, it's pretty stupid and is always something I immediately notice.

    You're lying!

    Molly was a good character.

  • Their relationship depends on the player's choices, mostly.

  • I don't know, I think it's like wearing lipstick or wanting to wear a bracelet. It could be something special to her that she still holds onto mascara for those reasons.

  • @Everyone'sClemInTime

I don't know, maybe its because I shouldn't be expected to know anything about makeup but I thought it was just dark circles/marks: a sign that she doesn't sleep often.

  • As I said, it's a nit-pick and in no way is indicative of the real reasons why I don't think she's any more complex or layered than single post-it that reads "CHARATER" in all caps.

And just the thought of her washing all the walker blood off of her face and jacket, but re-applying makeup so that Luke-chan will notice her is a bit far-reaching for me.

  • Lol tbh in this pic (or any of her pics) I don't really see any eyeliner or mascara. (Mascara is for your eye lashes and eyeliner is to well, line your eyes.) And I should know, since I wear that shit every day.

Eye shadow (which go oj eyelids) though? Maybe. Although it could also just be that her eyes are darkened and sunken from not being able to sleep at night.

Sleep depravation (if that's what you're stabbing at) tends to result in a much more severely drained appearance. Typically, a lot of bags under the eyelids, dark spots. And even just her acting more quick and responding to situations with heightened mental dexterity would lend way to a debunk in that theory, although I must admit it isn't a super far shot considering her decision making skills are about as rash as a person with insomnia.

And I know Fight Club is a standard example, but he seems a lot more mentally unhealthy than Jane did. And all he endured was his inner power-persona being a fucking badass. It just doesn't compare.

  • Clementine saw Jane as the sister she never had, Jane saw Clementine as a way to maybe atone for for her sister.

  • Which is myopic once you remember that she insisted that Sarah reminded her of Jamie.
