Is anyone pissed off about the new name

  • I don't know why I should be. The game is not even out.

  • They are probably calling it The New Frontier to distance it from the others games, since it is supposed to appeal to new players as well and not be solely a continuation of Season 2.

In a marketing standpoint, naming it New Frontier was genius. The current fan base and buyers are probably mostly people that been playing the game since season 1. Giving it new name gives people the impression that they didn't miss out on season 1 and 2. the people new to walking dead will give the game a chance. Thus, increasing the number of people that are going to buy the game.

It IS Season 3, regardless of what they call it. I see no reason to get pissy over a technicality. They are probably calling it The New Fron

  • I can't wait for season 3 to be absolutely stunning so all of this useless complaining about the name will deem utterly pointless.

  • Idk why but yeah it kind of does bother me the name season 3 gave some more hype for it but I can still live with it.

  • It's a name... although to be honest I'm not surprised, people can find anything to complain about in 2016.

  • First you complain about lack of Kenny, then you complain about new character and now you complain about the name? Lol, chillax (btw, this is addressed to that side of the fandom. You know which side).

  • Hoo boy! I am not able to post links, however most of what I say,can be verfied on this site. Now then I beileve that someone at TT said that they were'nt calling it season 3 because it is a new begining. Not that they will ignore the past Seasons or even Michonne mini. But to give it that fresh feel new comers crave. In a nutshell, if it bombs they have the title S3 in reserve just incase.

No. I mean I don't really like the name that much either, but it's nothing to get pissed over. It's just a name. It's not like it affects the overall quality of the actual product.

  • It doesn't really bother me. Every arc/volume in the comic series had a sub title opposed to being called Volume [Enter Number Here]. The name itself is unfitting and sounds like some kind of sub title to a Star Wars movie imo. "Telltale's The Walking Dead Season 3: A New Frontier" is a bit of a mouthful

  • Would you say people are... complai-naming?

  • I'm not bothered by the new title. I think if they're going to keep doing Walking Dead games in the future, then it makes sense to give the games names now, instead of calling them 'Seasons 3,4,5 etc' much like what book series do, or what somebody commented on here as the actual comics doing [which this season is said to going more into to].

I've seen this with Resident Evil and other franchises. The more sequels you have, the more difficult it'll likely be to draw in new gamers, and that's essentially what Telltale want to avoid, but still keep it's current fans as well. Giving Season 3 a named title will be less intimidating to newbies, and isn't pretending the first two games didn't exist in the slightest. If anything, if the story-line we've been hinted with does indeed work in a way that'll tailored to both old fans and new, then it's possible it'll encourage newbies to try out the previous TWDG Seasons, to even 400 days and Michonne's game. Uncharted 4 cleverly worked like that as well by giving mentions of the previous titles and having the game function as both an ending to Drake's tale, and an entry point for new fans to check out the series and that one's been going on over 10 years already. Although they don't hide the numbers, each is still given a name.

TWDG Season 1 came out 4 years ago, now that might not sound like a lot but it is, and when Season 3 finally finishes, it'll be somewhere close to 5 years. As time goes on, that's going to get bigger and they have to keep people invested and win over new gamers. Look at what Capcom are doing, they remastered the remake for Resident Evil 1 and Zero and now they're planning to remake the original Resident Evils after that, because that series came out 20 years ago, and they can't expect new gamers to get invested in some old PS1 games that might've even come out before their time. And they've called their games all different things from, RE: Code Veronica, RE: Revelations, RE: Outbreak. They're all part of that universe....exceeept for Operation Raccoon City, that can kiss my ass.

If it doesn't happen now with these name changes, then it'll happened sooner or later because 3 or 5 years down the line if TWDG is still going, it'll get to that point again where it needs to have another entry point like Season 3 is being, so it's better they do it now. And I know people don't like talking about this, but if Telltale do eventually want to do other TWDG games on other characters [if alongside the games still starring Clementine] then those can't be called Season 4 or 5 when they don't connect, because things would start getting really confusing.

All said and done about the title, I keep thinking of Star Trek with A New Frontier XD

  • No going back was fine, just because you hate it so much doesnt mean its bad. Most people liked it.

I just like the ideal that Telltale is self-aware and knew how balls No Going Back was, so they opted to ret-con the whole thing in favor of naming this new season something entirely different.

I don't like the new name, but it changes nothing about how I feel about the new game and I do not feel good about the new game at all.

  • Anyone think we should be less concerned with the name and more with the fact our choices from season 2 will not impact season 3 outside dialogue?

  • Its getting more comic themes and I really like that. Good point.

I didn't expect everyone to have such strong opinions on this, yikes. Let's refrain from insults and such, over something very trivial.

That's what has me ticked off. That and the idea that my having played this series from the very begining means absolutely nothing to TTG. I've stuck with this series and my reward is being given thow away lines.

"Me and AJ had to go it alone after my group died"

"Me and AJ lived with a woman named Jane for a while but she died"

"My friend got me to a safe place but it fell, now Im with a new group."

TTG really doesnt give two craps about my loyalty to the series. They need that new money.

  • I kinda just wish they went with:

The Walking Dead Season 3: A New Frontier

  • I would be concerned about that, but unfortunately I stopped caring after you said it the 385935th time

  • THe walking dead had always been a pioneer story. ITs about people struggling to make a new world out of a wild untamed land. FRontier perfectly describes that.
and its just a name, you know its season three right?

  • Honestly I don't mind it, I think it's designed to attract new players in the game, I know they could have come up with something else (maybe "The Walking Dead Season Three: A New Frontier") but maybe we will find the title more relevant after playing the first episode, who knows.

  • Chill bro

No because its just a fucking name. If you don't like the name just keep calling it season 3. No one cares.

  • Honestly it's kind of stupid how they are trying to make this a game understandable to new players while also making it a continuation, I mean how could you do both? To the people new to the walking dead game, guess what, if you have a season 1 and a season 2 of something, and you decide to start at Season 3, you're doing it wrong...

  • Mmhm, it was objectively bad from the jump.

The Mexican standoff resulting in one of the most flaccid intros to any game I've ever seen, the distractingly large shift of plot and tone, Kenny and Jane's arbitrary feud, AJ being a nothing prop, the cruel disregard the episode had for characters in favor of narrowing the honey pot so that Clementine would forcibly have to choose between two unlikable people, Clementine herself having seemingly little choice or any rewarding payoff or development, Clem dying several times in circumstances that are essentially dusted off as if she's a robot, skewed motivations, skewed logic, awful ending in which the choices seem insultingly dull, A forced dream sequence used to insight nostalgia and nothing else, boring scenes that go nowhere, I could go on and on.

    One thing though...

just because you hate it so much doesnt mean its bad. Most people liked it

And just because most people liked it doesn't mean it's good.

No going back was fine, just because you hate it so much doesnt mean its bad. Most people liked it.

  • I disagree with that. You cant always expect people to start at the beginning of something and they shouldn't have to in this case. If this season is going to be a new adventure, then it should be able to stand on its own. If I had just now heard of this series, I wouldnt want to be forced to play the first two seasons just understand whats going on. Having it tie into the previous seasons seems more like a nod to faithful fans than a necessity. I believe it is the smartest approach they could make with the best chance of gaining as many fans as possible.

The same way they did it for Mass Effect 2 and 3? Remember that even though the game is from a series, it should still be a game that explains past events for new players that may not have access to Season One or want to try Season Two/Three first.

  • From a profitable point of view, then this is a successful approach for Telltale's company.

This doesn't negate that numerous faithful fans are uneasy because A New Frontier possibly won't pay the respect that previous seasons deserve, and a title that breaks the sequence does little to reassure them.

The title is not a problem really. One of my concerns is how much connection to the previous seasons would be, there is though so I'm happy about that. I'm just not a huge fan of the idea of treating it as a NEW story, which is my only concern. Treating a third season of a main line of the story as it's own game in one half seems a bit off-putting. Sure some series do it but I don't think every game should just because.

Personally for me, as an aspired writer, I feel a story should continue as it is without forcing it to seem like it's seperate story. It can possibly damage the continuity. New audience can join late in the game to check it out without sacrificing a long running story and they can then catch up with everyone else. It's not that hard. It creates commitment to the series/long running story. Catch up if you fall behind, if you're willing to commit.

Still it may be a blast so I'm looking forward to it with an open mind.

  • Well we better get more than just a "nod" when it is tied to the other two seasons, I want a continuation of the characters and story that ult over those two seasons. A new beginning is fine, but not a completely new story that ignores the previous two seasons save for some dialogue.

I like the implications less than the name itself. Changing it up like this suggests that they are trying to make the game a new entrypoint into the story, which means the focus on Clementine that I like will porbably be split towards tutorial parts and Javier.

When games try this, starting over by half, it's usually shit.
