  • Isn't it kinda late to be discussing WB publishing the retail version of Batman considering it's already out? Also doesn't Skybound/Telltale Publishing already handle the Walking Dead games?

Interesting that they're having meetings at Warner Brothers though. Hm. I was wondering about that too. Perhaps it's over WB publishing TWD:ANF and Batman for retail, but it might also be something else.

  • No...get your butts back to work!!!! Actually it would be so cool to meet them. My luck though..they would ask me my forum name and the season two gang would take me into an alley and kick my ass.

Fun fact: I am a forum member with a marketing degree. Also a fun fact: I am not a forum member who has yet commented on Telltale's marketing...

I agree, on surface level it looks bad, but I would be interested to see if Telltale has collected any marketing data on their way of releasing games and have come to the definitive conclusion that this is the best way to market their game based on that data - since Telltale has arguably a difference audience and product than big-budget AAA game producers that you would expect more marketing around. If so, as much as it pains me to say it as a frustrated consumer and marketing-degree holder, maybe it's not so bad.

I do wish they would cut it out with the "soon" or "very soon" to be the equivalent of more than a few weeks. If they can't spill the beans on the info until much later or until a not-yet-determined date, they should be transparent about that or even stay silent, instead of stringing along the rabid pre-release fanbase for weeks on end. It's essentially lying, but since "soon" has no specific time definition, they can't be held liable for it.

The "soon" thing does make me think though... While they no doubt most likely have a marketing plan, it doesn't seem to be the best choreographed. If they really did mean "soon" and then were told by execs "oops sorry we got to hold off on that" they should really plan accordingly. In my opinion they should have at least a three month's schedule of what materials can and will be released and on approximately what day or week, then get exec approval. That way "soon" really can mean "soon". But then again I know it's difficult with a game that's in constant development into it's final hours. Especially in a franchise that's so popular that you've got to be careful what you say or else everything will be overanalyzed by the fans and you'll end up with a "Caprikorn Farm" situation where we forum members inadvertently likely found the main setting of the game without anyone even mentioning it yet.

Your last part is the reason why I think they are withholding concrete information. I don't know if you join or lurked during Season 1 or 2 (I joined in the beginning of Season 2), but the fan base of here is crazy. Members of here will literally go through game files to find out information and analyze episodes to their tiniest bits. This place is like a piles of hay soaked in lighter fluid. If the smallest bit of info leaks out, TellTale won't be able to stop the inferno that starts in the forums and leaks out to the rest of the internet.

From what I have seen in the post-TWD-S1 era of TellTale, every other game besides TWD has been given more info during it's pre-release time. I theorize that it is to generate hype and a following. TWD already has that fan base, both in the forum and among the rest of the internet. It doesn't take much to stir the hive. It is a beast that must be contained. If TellTale let's it out to early, any other TellTale game could suffer.

We also have to remember that TellTale's games are story driven, not mechanics driven. You run the risk of spoilers if you reveal too much info on what is happening in your game. In TelTale's case, the story is the game. That's all they can talk about. I can imagine it hard to advertise a purely story driven game where only the events of the first episode are all you have to work with. I look at it like trying to advertise a movie where only the first fifth of the film is scripted and filmed. So, I imagine that this has caused TellTale to use very unorthodox tactics in their advertising. It's worked through. And as a side note: the teaser for A New Frontier revealed more than Season 2's teaser (which literally only showed Season 2 Clem running in the words).

I don't see the issue with TellTale's marketing. It is crazy, but it has worked. No, I don't have a marketing degree (civil engineer here). That's just me analyzing what I'm seeing based upon what I see as logical and highlighting the fact that I have 0 marketing experience and 0 info of TellTale's inner workings. However, I do appreciate your more professional perspective @LoseMyHome

The five stages of waiting for a Telltale Games Epsiode.

    1. Excitement
    2. Frustration
    3. Barganing
    4. Headdesk
    5. Acceptance

Personally I'm at stage three, and would gladly offer TTG my first born child for a trailer, or some kind of update, hell a screen shot would tide me over nicely.

Headdesk... just made it to stage four.

  • So I guess at I'm stage five because I'm not really pissed off at the lack of news lol.

I've got so many things to do that it honestly doesn't matter to me, but it'll probably change when trailer drops.

Well thanks, but I don't know if I would call myself a "professional" yet... I finished my marketing undergraduate schooling like 5 months ago.

I just believe Telltale's marketing looks bad because, yeah, when your product is a gift-able item released around the holiday season, you want to market that. And compared to other games, telltale doesn't have a lot of visibility or information for consumers to go off of. I agree, they're dealing with a bigger beast than just a typical game, where story can usually be spoiled in order to showcase gameplay - the heart if the game. But let's be honest, telltale gameplay is not what people play these games for, so they have little else to rely on in terms of what they can spoil. A release date though should not be that difficult.

Seeing their pattern of scarce information also leads me to believe that they care more about "word of mouth" marketing, either through the fans (I know I sure have recommended the first season to a few people) or through big YouTube letsplays like Pewdiepie and Jacksepticeye (which is how I personally discovered the company). Though honestly, I'm not optimistic that Pewdiepie will play season 3 after the way he panned Michonne, and skipped over Tales from the Borderlands. But given that Jack seems to be much more positive with his telltale playthroughs I think they will be able to rely on him. I just hope telltale has the right approach to this way of marketing because "word-of-mouth" marketing is risky, it relies on factors outside company control.

Javier and the walker both have brands, you need a fire and a hot branding iron to make them so that could also fit the fire theme in the logo.

  • Some guy on YouTube said he went to pay for the game and they told him it's delayed until early 2017 :/ I'm not sure if I believe it or not.

  • He might be talking about the Amazon pre order; keep in mind that you can't pre-order the game outside of the Season Pass disc.
