  • For some reason. I loved the first episodes better than the first episodes of Season 2

  • I. LOVED. IT.

Not only am I playing as a different character alongside the beloved story of Clementine, I got immediately invested in Javier's story, which I felt needed to happen if I was gonna enjoy the season as a whole. You can see already that the established characters have a lot more depth and purpose than season 2. There are a wide range of themes and emotions to help develop interest, rather than the constantly bleak atmosphere of previous seasons which ultimately drained me playing through it. As long as they can build on a solid start, I think we're in for a good game here.

  • I liked it. Javier's cool and all the new characters are likeable, Clem is really cool. It did a lot of things well like bring hubs back.

Although there are definitely some bad things. No rewind, short episodes, a community that looks like they've been doing pretty good for themselves falls as soon as the protagonist gets there and groan worthy return of David.

Overall i enjoyed it and i'm looking forward to episode 3. Although it's kinda scary to think we're almost half way through the season already.

  • Well, aside from the atrocious way that Jane and Kenny were killed off (seriously, that didn't deliver the feels at all - I was pretty close to yelling at the computer monitor there), I thought it was alright. Javier's decent enough, and I get all giddy inside whenever he gets to talk to Clementine. The other characters are mostly meh, with a few exceptions like Tripp, Mariana and Kate.

I thought that Conrad's transition into trying to screw over Clementine was pretty rushed. I mean, yeah he'd still be a wreck after Francine, but him pulling out a gun in that train tunnel when they all should've been focusing on getting out was kinda silly.

I'm glad they're giving us more room to explore, at least it seems to be that way. Getting to interact with more objects than in season 2 is a nice change. But seriously, they NEED to bring back the hubs with all the different dialogue questions that Lee got in season 1. They could get away with it in season 2 with how young Clem was, as it would probably seem a little odd for a little girl to be asking a bunch of adults all these questions about their lives. But Javier's in a better position to do it, and with the amount of new people introduced this time around, I think some backstory would go a long way.

Overall, I liked it enough. There's definitely room for improvement, and I've been purposely trying to avoid Jane's ending now because of the insulting way her character was offed, but Javier's story is at least enough to kind of grab my attention.

But if they were to have done it differently, I actually think that they should've made this season with Javier as the DLC for season 2, then bring him back and divvy up the time between Clem and Javi more equally. As much as I enjoyed the Michonne stuff, it really didn't add anything to the regular games. The 400 days cast, although not serving their full potential in season 2, at least made me go, "Oh wow! They're actually here at Howe's because of the choices I made! That's pretty cool!"

See? If they had cut Javier's story down to maybe three or four episodes, gotten people invested into his story beforehand and then brought him back, maybe people would care about him more and there'd be less negativity overall. It wouldn't come close to the original Lee and Clem dynamic obviously, but it might've given our choices for season 3 that extra mph. How much more heartbreaking would it have been if Mariana died after having several episodes-worth of buildup with her character, only to then have her get shot almost out of nowhere? Shock value works better when you're more invested in the characters, I think.

Anyway, that's what I think so far. Not too bad, but not great by any means just yet. I think they've got the potential to turn things around, so hopefully they can come back with a stronger 3 episodes.

  • Disappointed because the hype around season 3 was built around the endings, and I did not like they killed Kenny/Jane and just move on, but that doesn't mean it's a bad game I still recommend people play ;)

  • Love it, trying to talk myself out of making a pot of coffee and running through it again on a different save file.

  • It was Okay. Highlights were definetly Javier and Clementine. But the flashbacks and the short length soured the Episodes a lot.

    6.5/10 for Part 1 and 6.0 for Part 2.

  • I couldn't agree more

Gabe (as long as he keeps himself from at arms length with Clem at all times). Whenever Gabe goes over to Clem: Javier, neuter your nephew.

  • Very funny, I hope their alive (Kenny and Jane) but I do not want Clementine having a bullet wound in her check

Love it, and apparently so do most of the critical reviews. Side note: I always knew the alone with AJ ending was the right choice. At least Jane is alive... somewhere...probably... in my playthrough.

  • What if she is alone with A.J. and Kenny is alive

  • I don't think Kenny would commit suicide

I have to admit that I like Jesus voice more than I thought I would. Whenever that voice actor plays minor characters, like the mooks in Dishonored, I always imagine Garrus walking about, but not with Jesus. It didn't give me flashes of Garrus constantly.

There was something dark and gritty and just raw about the first two seasons, from the "production design" to the atmosphere of the dark woods and all, to even the dialogue and the way things happened. I did not see and feel that in this season at all. It felt....cartoony.

Kenny deserved a better ending than in some flashback and as an afterthrought. The story that should have been told was what happened to Clem after Season 2, not this Javier business. I feel they completely abandoned and with it ruined the existing narrative and established continuity in service of this ill conceived new story line. And what kills me is that it is not even good. OMG. it is so bad.

See, this is what happens when you put out a new season every 2 to 3 years. The people who were first on board and made Seasons and 2 are no longer there. Any show, real or game, that changes writer, showrunner and producer hand too much is bound to fail and/or backfire. Seasons 1 and 2 worked, so why mess with it? Or if they wanted to no longer continue the Clem story line, why not just create a whole new story then and not bother connecting it to that. Close that chapter. I would have preferred that much more, to be honest, than this.

That said, I think they will kill off Clem at the end of this season. if there is a season 4, I hope it will be about something totally new since i am sure by the end of season 3 they will have killed off any remnants from S1 and 2.

    10/10 so far

And for anyone who is disappointed with the game based on how Clementine behaves well it goes back to what I've said many times before about TTG... Although it is never explicitly stated, there are wrong choices. So you doing your best to keep Clementines shoes clean in the second season was for nothing. Clementine in my story is behaving just as I played her, and I used the generate story feature. In short, a lone survivor who shot Lee & Rebecca (..Kenny too) and learned the value of trust from Luke... Lee as well... She also saves people (learned from Lee).

  • well, telltale was wrong in doing that.

oh hey leaf! i've read a bunch of your fanfics in the past, had no idea you were on here!

i pretty much agree with everything said here except i'm iffy about clem being more of a playable character.
on one hand, i really like how she is as a supporting character. i feel like her as a character probably wouldn't have as much impact if we controlled her (and i kinda fear that she'd be treated similarly to season 2 where we can make her say one thing, but the writers make her think another.)
on the other, there are somethings that seem... out of character for do in TNF. some people's clem wouldn't have the 'i stay on my own' mentality. and the obvious bias the players rightfully have towards her make it hard to treat her along the same lines as any other npc.

but idk. i guess it feels like they boxed themselves in having her be the s2 protag and having different possible personalities.¯_(ツ)_/¯

  • I like it. I like it for current Telltale games..

It's got real direction this story, rather than the jumbled mess of Season Two.

My real problem so far is that it's a game reliant too much on action, it feels like i'm speeding through the episodes and not in control of my character. I hardly get to move around with Javi before the episode is finished! I think I counted three hub sections where I can move around with my character. Three?! In two episodes?! That's ridiculous.

They really need to bring back more of the point and click puzzle element of their games to pad out the length of each episode. I like the story, characters and actions but these games are way too short.

Other than that i'm really excited for the next episodes, far moreso than Season Two.

  • Those discussions are still valuable.

But what would they do there...? I don't think it will be related to the story at all.

Do people realize that Kenny, Jane and Edith can still appear in flashbacks?

  • Oh hey, what's up? Yeah haha, it's been a long time :)

You've got a good point there. Maybe it would be better if we just let Javier do his thing, but yeah, the whole "mercenary" kind of thing they've got her being seems a little... off. I mean, I'm enjoying seeing Clem kick some ass and all, but I think they should've tailored at least a few of those 42 magical types of Clementine thing they were talking about and have her react differently depending on the one you picked - the big ones probably being what Lee had taught you most about in season 1, and then whether you went with the determination for Kenny, the kindness for Luke, or the independence for Jane.

That's probably just wishful thinking on my part though xD I kind of liked controlling Clem in season 2, but yeah, I can see the benefits of having her as a supporting role, too.

I just wish that I could somehow find it within myself to not make all of my choices geared towards one character. I mean, throughout the first two episodes, whenever Clem was involved in a choice, I just went, "So long Javier's family! Clem needs me!" xD

  • See the ending i got my Clem ended up alone so i suppose its kind of fitting how she ended up the way she is in season 3.

I had shot kenny because i felt he was wrong but couldnt bring myself to trust jane after forcing Clem to make a decision like that so she left and that in itself i felt was a powerful ending but the ultimate ending had her walking with baby AJ through a herd which doesnt seem reasonable way of surviving.a

this made the flashbacks scenes feel like how the hell did she manage to get through keeping him and herself alive long enough for the flashback scenes

that said im really happy this series is back and am not dissapointed at all. I was actually i was dissapointed in the 2nd season which felt like too much was going on at once, too many storylines too many characters too many deaths and clems plot armor which had me trying to save everyone and her not dying and watching everyone die instead

  • They don't have to be attached to the core narrative as long as the tone and pacing of these flashbacks coincide with the tone and pacing of what Javier is experiencing! We could spend more time with the characters and in the places that we like.

Telltale, you do have a change to make things right.

    Did you say @mostlypoptars?

  • It's like they spent 3 or 4 years creating this story line and everything leading to Clem's story in the ZA and bringing Kenny back, which was awesome, and then they just half assed through it in lousy flashbacks, completely shitting on the characters they built and abandoning that narrative in service of Javier, who may as well be Tom, Dick or Harry for all I care. Wow. Just wow.

  • the only great thing about this was that they were smoking pot. I mean really, why dont people just get perpetually high in the ZA. No one had ever brought that up (well except for that 400 episode with the sticky in the glove compartment, which was awesome).

  • I'm really liking it. The story is going in a very interesting direction, and I'm not too concerned about the playing split between Javi and Clem. Javi and his story is engaging to me, and I'm sure that what's in store for Clem will be good stuff indeed.

  • Technically, I hate how almost every conversation option for the flannel shirt wearing woman (whose name I've forgotten) involves a romance option. I wish that Telltale would post icons beside their text options like a heart of angry face or something so I would know the TONE of the text. I made a tone mistake with Clem with "Did they kill YOUR family?" Then the main character YELLS at her angrily although I thought that it was a surprised "YOUR" tone ("Clem will remember your anger" - great, thanks) and I did it with the flannel woman when she was dying and I said, "You CAN'T DIE on me!" in apparently an amorous way when I had no intention of ever flirting with her.
I don't remember making those errors in season one or two.
So I'm just so-so about this season so far.
