Who cares if he's not blood related. He's a living breathing human being with no one else to care for him. That's reason enough if you have a heart and a conscience.
I don't hate AJ even though it's a poorly written plot device , " hey clem , your best friend who you just slapped ..has just fallen to her … moregrave ?" ...1 minute later.." Forget about that , wow a baby" ..... I knew Kenny cared about kids but I didn't also know he was mother Teresa , smh .. But I don't hate AJ

my deal with aj in season 2 was that he was essentially just used as a plot device. it didn't help that i was forced to have some kind of bond with him (on top of having forced bonds with other characters ahem)
i don't really have that same problem in season 3 now. he's actually kinda adorable, and isn't used to just stir up conflict when the script dictates.
He's a living breathing human being with no one else to care for him
Yeah, no, he really isn't... He's a fictional character. There's a massive difference between disliking the emergence of a poorly written plot device and hating an actual human being.

I don't hate him, but I don't like him either, I simply don't care about him, I wish he didn't exist at all so that the game doesn't pull this "innocent kid" shenanigan gig again. We already had that with Lee with Clementine.
I know this might sound dark , since everyone here talked about how "Amid the Ruins" was going to be dark because of it's creepy and eerie episode banner, but I was expecting that the baby was going to die in Rebecca's womb... and comes back... through her stomach...

I have absolutely no hate to AJ. He's just a cute little toddler.
But think about it.
Taking care of a baby in the apocolypse with little to no baby food, diapers, or water is extremely taxing. Not to mention that babies sometimes cry for no reason; they do it just to do it. You have to potty training the child, teach it how to talk, teach it how to walk, which all in all is almost impossible for a 11 to 13 year old to do.
I don't think people hate AJ, they just dislike him because it's a drag on Clementine, to no fault of AJ's. He's a baby. He can't help that he was born in the zombie freaking apocolypse.
I don't hate AJ. I don't know AJ. The issue with using anyone ( not just an infant ) as a plot device to provoke action or emotion is that t… morehe writers first have to establish a connection between the characters. Without doing so, it makes the situation and the characters feel forced and unnatural.
It's also the reason most critiques for writers come with the advice of show - don't tell. We've been told Clem spent a great deal of time caring for AJ for some reason, but we as players weren't shown them bonding for any length of time ( unlike the natural flow of Clem bonding with Lee. )
This could've been bypassed if AJ had been the child of someone that Clem had bonded with in a previous game, but we're not given that in Season 2. For example if Kenny had a child with Sarita during his absence, the audience would've felt some pull through the history with Kenny ( like him or hate him, he already lost one child ). Alternatively, if AJ had … [view original content]
I don't hate AJ, but I don't have much of a bond either. I wouldn't let it die, but I wouldn't sacrifice myself either TBH.
Then again in Season Two Episode 5 at the start, I went straight for the baby. I'd protect it as best I can, but I'd also look for a place to give it to (community, etc), where it'd be safer than with me.

We have to consider the characters real people when we discuss them. There is no point in consuming fiction if you constantly remind yourself and others that nothing depicted happened.

You see, you're misinterpreting the "hatred" for AJ, like most people. We don't dislike AJ because he's a baby, nor did we have any sort of malice against the character, really. It's that we hate how the character is used. How Clementine is forced to have a bond with him, despite having little to no relevant reasons for doing so, how he's used to create the Kenny vs Jane fight, and how, we as the players, have yet to be able to build a connection with him, outside of being expected to think he's "adorable" from the few minor scenes we've seen in season 3.
Most people just feel indifferent to him. We don't have any particular reasons to love or hate him, and that's where the issue lies. Had Telltale's writers spent the time to give us an actual cause to care for AJ, other than him just being a baby, it'd be much easier to have concern for his welfare when they decide to use him as a plot device. Instead, they just throw him in whenever they want "drama" and expect us to give a shit. It'd bad writing.

I think he's grown to know that when she hums that means to be quiet as a mouse.
And it is super adorable.
Also when she holds AJ and cuddles with him... JUST UGH
Anyone that covers a baby's mouth is a complete moron.
Yes, I'll agree at times, it's necessary to view the characters as real when discussing them and their motivations. But when someone, in this case being @Jimayo, describes other users as "some of the worst people on the planet" for disliking AJ, as if their opinion on a character somehow determines what kind of person they are outside these forums, I believe it's important to remind ourselves of the line between reality and fiction.

That is true! However, good characters need to have both qualities—be effective plot devices that affect the narrative, and have a complex personality and behavior. I believe the user above meant that Alvin Junior is just a plot device.

She became anxious after learning about the New Frontier's uprising at Richmond not because the community where they were heading had been taken, but because Alvin Junior was there and she wouldn't be able to see him.
The point of disagreement is that people who might like—or simply don't mind—babies in real life do not take Alvin Junior as a real baby while they play the game, but as a fictional character, and therefore act differently.
If they did consider him a real baby, and acted toward him like they do with real babies, it would not be necessary to remind ourselves of the line between reality and fiction because there would be no disagreement and nobody would be acting as "some of the worst people on the planet."
Just different character interpretation philosophies, I suppose.

I know right? How are we not supposed to care about this living breathing human being that we know for 1 and a half episodes...
It's not like we took care of this baby for 4 years during the apocalypse and got to know him, and it must've been fun for an 11 year old girl Clementine to take care him, nurture him all by herself...

I really hate it when people start exaggerate/insulting/name-calling people over a fictional character.

And there is little they can do with a toddler as a character for now.
No, but it is unreasonable to hate him.
Sarah never made it out the trailer and we were never friends
Extra likes, Jimayo!

Remember how Clem scarred her right hand so she can always remember A.J. in one of the flashbacks?
Too bad most of the players don't get why the hell would she do that because there was no emotional investment to it!
I can just imagine her eating something with an utensils, looks at her hand, bursts into tears and the players would be just in awe.

yeah! i loved it too much for it to only have one use! c:
Everything in a story that is meant to help move the story forward is a plot device.
Thank you!
Yeah, I understand your point. And I also think that it's unfair with Clementine. But there's nothing we can do about it.
I can wait to see more interactions betweet these two!
Sure thing!
