Why is TellTale trying so hard to appeal to newcomers with Season 3?
Whoops, I mean "A New Frontier" Season 3 so far seems to appeal and favor newcomers compared to fans of the series since the beginning. They barely have any sections where you play as Clem, and it's only for 5 minutes for each episode, instead calling Season 3, Season 3, instead it's called A New Frontier so new people won't get intimidated, render our Season 2 endings useless by killing Kenny, Jane, Edith and destroying Wellington the first time we see them. In a cheap way as well. Clem's personality staying the same no matter what you taught her as Lee and the choices she made Season 2 besides some dialogue. All of this just to make sure new players can play this game without having to play the first 2. Look, I get they want more players, but they literally screwed all old and loyal fans who've been here since Season 1 all the way back in 2012. Looking at the stats, there doesn't seem to be many new players to begin with, since all the choices involving Clem are overwhelmingly in her favor. Really, I just don't understand it at all. The majority of the people playing this game are old fans. It doesn't even seem that hard either, at least to me. Like all the ending you chose in Season 2, you can get completely different flashbacks, so the people of previous games feel rewarded and newcomers have the alone ending to work with. Since Clem is not playable in the present, it seems a hell of a lot easier to make her personality different. Look at Kenny and Lilly in Season 1, they completely change their attitude toward you depending on what you do with Larry. As for the title, why not call it "The Walking Dead Season 3: A New Frontier?" I just really don't get it. I still like it, but it could so, so much better right now.

Who knows, maybe they overestimated how many people nowadays is interested in these types of games, maybe they thought there was more demand than there was, I definitely think that these types of games are a very niche game compared to things like Call of Duty.
We can only really wait and see what they do with a potential next game before we can judge whether or not they think diverting the attention from the (until now) main storyline was a good idea
Because newcomers will think and believe that the games are tailored to how they play as the rest of the fan base have realised that it's a lie.
Well if you look at the forums, you'll rarely find anyone who is "old school" or has been around since season 1. Im assuming they either grew up or just stopped using the forums. So i think as telltale staff read these forums as well, they get a sense that a lot of the people are new, i mean you get people asking threads about season 1 choices and situations like they've never seen or heard of it before and a old school member would know that naturally because how long they have played the game for. I never made an account because i prefered to play the games, but when i saw a lot of backlash from TNF, i decided to start using one to share thoughts. I was never the type who would share my thoughts but it's actually good to share it with people, im a bit regretful i didn't do it earlier on, but the people on here are still great company.
Because they want money.
This. They seem to think that the current fanbase is dwindling and leaving, therefore they need to acquire a new fanbase which as you say doesn't exist.
But the reason people are leaving is because of the streamlined features of the series' and the declining quality of the games that they are making. Why bother forking out $20 or whatever for a game when virtually every playthrough is the same with little to no variation in choices and you can just watch your favourite YouTuber play it for you?
I thought it seemed like most of the people here have been with the series since the beginning. Maybe not always posting here, but have played both before ANF. I actually started posting here recently as well, though that was mostly to see the discussions and info passing around before the season since the drastic change had me worried, which proved true, unfortunately.
I'm glad I did though, I completely agree there's good conversation and people aplenty here. Especially compared to some of the forums I've posted on previously on.
Because they assume the rest of us are gonna buy the game anyway no matter what garbage they throw our way.
Unfortunately, they're right.
Sometimes i check peoples profiles out just something i do, and i haven't seen anyone who has joined in 2012 when season 1 was out, i 've seen only a a few in 2013 but that's very slim maybe 1 or 2 besides the moderators of course. It's mostly people who have joined 2014 to present who are still on here. Im sure they probably have played ANF, just don't post on here anymore i guess.
One thing i've noticed about these forums is you do get the standard trolls, but everyone on here can have conversations with each other in a respectful manner, after all, these are forums for us to connect with people who enjoy the same game and we can chat about the games and even general talk. It's good to share stuff you have in common with others.
Just because people didn't create an account in 2012, it doesn't mean that they didn't play it back when it came out. I followed the game as the episodes came out ever since 2012, but I created my account long after that.
Who knows, the funny part is, Im sure about 95% of players playing ANF played Season 1 and 2, so why even try to focus so much on this super low percentage of players.
Did you read the part i said about how i never made an account because i prefer to play the games? Im in the same boat as you. My point was that people who were on these forums around season 1 coming out not many are still actively on here.
Maybe they are re-writing it for the reason you pointed out. After they saw the amount of people that sided with Clem, maybe they knew they fucked up? Or I'm being optimistic and they are still failing to grasp the idea that we want Clem and a lot of Clem...
Honestly, I think the only reason I joined was because I bought Game of Thrones that day, and it prompted me to create a TT account to share my choices. It might have been one of the TWD games that prompted me, its too far back to remember but I rebought both seasons not long after getting myself an Xbox One for Christmas lol. But I'd never actually been to the website until this December.
I totally agree with your sentiments, its nice to have actual thought out conversations instead of TLDR from every other person, this is one of the best communities I've been to outside Elite Dangerous.
Lol just because people joined this forum later after S1 doesn't mean they didn't play the game back when it first came out in 2012.
So that new youtubers can play it and not be out of touch when they advertise it, that somehow gets them money.
One of the best answers for this question anyone could say.
I believe it is a combination of a few things. However the main reason why i feel telltale is appealing to new fans is because they simply figured it is easier to just start new and appeal to new fans rather than having to put hard work into making a season 3 continuation based off of players choices and endings from S2.
Mam, I've forced myself to be optimistic so many times after the VGA trailer, store descriptions, and game release before reading about the scrapped scenes I just don't know if I've got any left lol
I suspect a big part of it is that they expect people who bought the first two seasons to buy the third anyway, so they tailor the third to appeal to players who won't buy all the episodes if there were too many call backs.
This! So much of this.
That's true, I mean, the game doesn't live up to its promises.
Just a question, when you post a comment that is the same as someone else that i replied to , do you actually read what i say in response? Or do you get annoyed at what i say and just post a comment without actually reading the conversation? If you read what i said, you wouldn't need to of responded with that response. It wasn't to do with what you said, it was to do with the fact that these hardly anyone who was on these forums when season 1 was coming out that are still on here actively. Make sense now?

You don't get why they would want new players? Especially since the old, loyal fans can be so hard to please.
I'm a new fan. I bought all seasons ~1week ago, played em trough and after third season i had to ask refund of third season because i didn't like it at all, i rather watch it from youtube
Sorry for bad english
That isn't what they're doing. Yes they've said multiple times that it works for new players and old but that's it. Also I don't see why you'd think that they wouldn't want new players.
Well SORRY for wanting better instead, and SORRY for not wanting half assed games.
K
I feel like it goes beyond wanting better when people are declaring the game garbage and the worst of the series after only two episodes. People havent been happy since season one ended judging from the comments.
Don't be hard on yourself, just read the conversation before commenting (- :
From the artistic point of view, it's always a terrible choice to write a sequel in a way that enables you to skip the previous parts. If any new customer is interested in A New Frontier and TWD in general, then they should simply grab and play the first two seasons (which are truly great story games) in order to fully understand the overall story, characters and their individual bonds.
I think they've realized how heavily the second season relied on the first and thus trying to make this one more of an independent story
I'm reserving actual judgment for season 3 until the season is finished, but I really don't understand the "appealing to newcomers" thing either.
Take the show for example. There's 7 seasons (I think) of the show out now. Newcomers are inevitable every year, but if I (someone who doesn't watch the show, which would make me a newcomer in this instance) were to get interested in the show, I wouldn't just randomly start with season 4. I'd start at the beginning and work my way up to the current season. I'd imagine the same would ring true to newcomers or the game.
That being said, I like that they're at least trying to connect the story by still having Clementine around rather than starting completely fresh.
I'm a 2013er so I guess I'm the third on your list lol.
A fair point. I've played almost every telltale game since The Walking Dead season 1 but I didn't join the forums until Game of Thrones ep2 released.
I joined Telltale this december, never played a Telltale game before then, does that make me a terrible fan? :P
One can only hope that them rewriting alot for episode 3 means they have seen our pleas and get some more Clem gameplay in there, or just more of her story, but at this point I dunno
Haha howdy.
No, it makes you a new fan.
