So what did Telltale spend 2 years doing?

Although there are mixed opinions regarding ANF, it's become pretty clear to everyone that Telltale has a huge management issue and are struggling with their direction for this season.

Telltale must have had some (even a small) team working on TWD for the past two years... Or at least a more focused one in the last 6-7 months after Michonne finished.

... What exactly did they do during that time? The season has gone through several rewrites, there are 7-8 writers per episode, even the game's most popular VA has spoken out about the issues that Telltale is going through. It's a bit worrying that they're still not sure about their writing and storylines so late into the game.

I just... I don't understand why it's turning out to be such a rushed job when they had so much time to make it a smooth process with a well-defined, strong direction.

  • Working on other games? I dunno...they keep announcing new unreleased games but I think they should focus on the games that they have planned/already out because it makes them suffer in quality. ;; I'm confused as to how they have episode names and all that but they don't have a plot though??? shouldn't the plot be one of the first things you do when writing a story?

  • Making other games! TFTBL, Game of Thrones, Minecraft, Michonne, and Batman

  • Haven't they said that there are multiple teams working on different projects and that by doing so the quality of their games wouldn't be affected ? (Hell at this point why would we trust what they say, right ?)

Also I believe they have a general idea on where the story is going, but it might not be so detailed so that's why they got the titles for the episodes and the Steam Achievements (which are pretty vague). I`m feeling like they know how the season should end but they don't know how to get there.

    I don't know I just said what I think

  • By the looks of it, Telltale seems to be the equivalent to that kid who didn't even lift a finger to do his summer assignment...except Telltale had two years as opposed to a few months.

  • They might be observing how we react, to see if they need to change the storyline. Theres an option to betray Clementine, which may have been a way for the developers to see who would stick by Clemmy, and who would help Javi. They may want to kill Clemmy, but are seeing how one would react before they do something dire. (btw about 99% of people stuck by Clem)

  • To tell you the truth, one of those five got the most effort and attention compared to any other Telltale game.

  • Making batman and minecraft...

  • They were working really hard to make the best game they could. But something went wrong. The end.

  • They were playing an epic game of Mafia (SCUM)

  • Which one? I think Tales and GoT were great, Minecraft and Michonne were pretty well done, but Batman just didn't cut it

    Rewrites.

I mean, look at the teaser. And even the screenshots. Even some of the more recent screenshots that were released like, two weeks before release were seemingly adjusted. More time was likely spent thinking about what the plot should be rather than exploring and detailing said plot.

I really wouldn't be surprised if this is why it's like this - TellTale apparently have no foresight with TWD and are shown to completely fail in long-term planning. Maybe the truth is they have no idea what to do with Clementine other than couple her with AJ and hope that the audience are satisfied that this is a good motivation/role for her in the apocalypse.

S1-S2? Kill off the two remaining characters, start afresh with a new protagonist who meets a new group.

S2-S3? Kill off your chosen companion, railroad endings and apparent personality from the protagonist in S2 into one, start afresh with a new protagonist who meets a new group.

  • This is only further proof of why they need to end the series after ANF. It's blatantly obvious telltale has no direction or structure for the walking dead anymore as shown in ANF and S2.

  • They have their main fanbase (or should I say people who buy all their games) and a fairly big company now. They will announce one game after another without much effort into the plot, choices etc.
Splitting the first episode into 2 was one of their new movements.

  • I'm sure they didn't start immediately after finishing season 2 also when they started developing I'm sure they scrapped like 50 storylines to finally stick to Javier..just my 2 cents on this I'm not sure

  • Wow after all those rewrites and it probably ended up doing worse than the original written version would have. Hardly an improvement

  • I think it went like this:

After Season 2 concluded, the team got seperated and moved to other projects, like Tales from the Borderlands (Probably already in Production), Game of Thrones (Probably already in prod.), The Walking Dead Michonne (Pre Production.), Minecraft Story Mode (Pre Prod.) and Batman (Very Early Pre Prod.). So they didn't really worked on ANF for some time.

After Borderlands and Game of Thrones concluded, some were pushed to other projects, like Minecraft and Michonne, since those two probably entered full production by the time. Some Writers, however, got the contract to map out the overall narrative for the next TWD Season. Writers, like Brad Kane, who'd simultaniously write for Minecraft, was declared as Season Lead for ANF. But they seem to have problems, where the story should go. Several weeks, if not months, passed and more and more writers get involved, to ensure, that the game is finished by the end of the Year.

While these months passed by, the dev crisis beginns, where the writers pretty much just shout out ideas to the actual dev team, so they get at least something. Time goes on and, like i mentioned, more writers get involved to help the Writing Team out. They pretty much went all over the place with all their ideas on where the story should go.

At some point, they agreed on one version, where you play as a new character. From here on out, they actually seem to know, where they're going. So the actual dev team got the order, to develop a little teaser for E3, which they did.

And i think it's shortly after E3, where the next problems occur. The Writers can't seem to fully agree on one version. But at this time, they already startet recording the Voice Lines and they finished most of the locations. This is where Melissa Hutchison's story of cut content would fit in.

And i think it is at around September/October, where they realized, that they got pretty much nothing. So they started to Crunch and to put everything, that might be important, together. Its November and now they have a big, 2hrs long First Episode. But they dont have any direction, where to go from there. So they decided to splitt this long first episode into to short episodes, so they get more time to develope the story of the remaining episodes. They probably had planned to Release Episode 1 "Ties That Bind" in December and Episode 2 "Divided We Fall" in January/Feburary.

But they feared to create a massive backlash, by releasing 2 short episodes back to back, so they decided to release both episodes at the same time under the same name. By releasing 2 episodes at the same time, they hoped to get some sort of "free pass" for a much longer wait for Episode 3.

And now here we are. I want to emphasise, that this is just a THEORY of mine and could be very wrong.

  • I didn't even realize Telltale had been working on this for 2 years. I hope that wasn't the case because what we got i thought was at best maybe a year of full committed development.

  • What does VA means?...

  • Telltale fell into the classic trap of taking existing players for granted and wanting to attract new players.

So they designed Season 3 as a stand alone without needing to play previous games, much like Bioware did with ME3.

However, whereas Bioware kept Shepard as the playable character, Telltale decided to create a new character to replace Clementine.

This alienated current players while not attracting new players
