Ah, fair enough. They're legitimate reasons for liking the guy, I suppose. I was just kind of curious as to what your explanation for claiming he was a breath of fresh air was, but now that you've explained it, I get what you mean.

I made a thread a while ago called Javier is such a breath of fresh air. That was a while ago though and I doubt I'd be able to find it so m

No way you prefer this over season 2?!

  • I like him I only hope they don't take the easy way out and kill him at the end because of everyone's hating on him

  • I like Javier so far. He is a better protagonist than Clem for sure

  • This is another big problem I had with him. With Lee and Clementine, the relationships felt more organic because they were as new to the playable character as they were to the player controlling them. We were free to dictate our responses to them because of this, the only characters we met with any previous attachment to Clem in S2 were character we, and Lee, met for the first time in the previous game, which gave a lot more freedom because our interactions were based on prior knowledge of them. Javiers family puts us in that same position, except our knowledge of them are limited to very short flashbacks where they're not really fleshed out at all beyond a few short lines, and I'm just not going to hold anywhere near as much of an attachment to them as I would a returning character(s) just because I'm forced into a position where my character has those bonds.

Topping it off, he just doesn't feel like a character who's been the sole protector of his brothers wife and kids traveling in a van for 4 years, he's a goofball who doesn't seem to know how to take precautions or teach these people any kind of survival skills, they're sloppy and generally feel more like they'd be people you'd meet a month or two after the shit hit the fan.

Javier is a very underwhelming protagonist. Even his emotional moments like when he buried Mari came off incredibly cheesy. Even the minor 4

  • Yup, they aren't a realistic reflection of what 4 years in the zombie apocalypse does to a person. Becca from 400 Days was becoming cold and emotionally hardened after just 200 Days. Look how much Clem changed in her time in this world.

Yet here comes Gabe and Mari, who show no signs of mental illness or cold calculating behavior. Here comes Javier, who despite probably having to murder people in front of the kids still cared about whether they smell weed or hear them talking about sex. And here comes Kate, who is still playing a will they wont they game with Javi and still reminisces about her husband that most all characters in TWD universe would have forgotten about by now.

And instead of at least just giving us this new group to try and learn to love, Telltale sets them up for failure by having this pathetically unimportant group take up screentime over literally their biggest and most beloved character.
