Am I The Only One Not Disappointed?

Am I the only one who didn't end up disappointed with how Season 3 turned out?

After everyone was getting all hyped up in the forums, the hype had died for me and I lowered my expectations and just didn't really expect this game to be focused around Clementine. I half expected it to be like Borderlands and just have Javi and Clem working together from the get-go, but other than that, I didn't expect to much.

Maybe that's why I wasn't as disappointed as most people on here.

  • I went in expecting to play as Javier 95% of the time, and I got just that. Outside of some pacing issues in episode 2, its been pretty great.

  • Well I was excited and I still loved it.

  • You lowered your expectations in order not to be disappointed. It is disappointing that a fan would have to do that in the first place.

  • I'd like to make a formal correction as telltale has stated this is not S3 and more of a unofficial reboot. Now onto am i disappointed with ANF? i'd have to say yes because to me even if ANF is exceptionally good i still see it as a cop out on telltales part. Rather than holding through to they're key selling point of "tailored story gameplay" where you choices actually mattered they opted to create an entirely new story and negate any custom story gameplay at all. Telltale was given a prime opportunity with the plethora of unique S2 endings to create a diverse S3 that integrated the choices of S2 and had a unique tailored story depending on how you played and ended S2. Instead of doing that they oped to just refreshing and making a new story which shows they're capability of being able to efficiently continue a story without having to give up because of having to put in depth work and effort into it. As far as ANF itself as of now its very lackluster and underwhelming with characterless characters, poorly written dialogue, little choice significance, short length and a very bland story. Clementine is shoehorned in for fanservice with little significance or importance and lacking any type of character and becoming a generic badass Molly-Jane 3.0. With that said i was EXTREMELY excited for ANF when it was announced and it was one of the most anticipated products for me for last year and all of this year only for it to be underwhelming and very lackluster. Despite my frustrations, disappointment and low expectations i am genuinely hopeful that the rest of ANF is absolutely wonderful.

  • I dont give a crap about Clementine. Javi is a badass.

  • Good amount of people loved it, maybe not on this forum but in general. TT was quite excited about the feedback they've received from critics (IGN, PCgamer, GameCrate, Metascore, GameSpot etc; all high scores like 8 or 9 out of 10).

  • I don't have a problem with it. I think the hate is a bit over the top to be honest.

  • I like it but it still disappoints me, does it count?

  • Continuing all possible endings from S2 would've been a pain...

With Jane theres 2 endings, with Kenny there's 2, with Clem alone there's one, makes up for 5 completely different stories, that only could've merged by some unsatisfying storytelling which would've made the 5 different endings not matter a lot.... Wait, that's what we got tho with ANF 0o ...

I'm still hyped. I'm still excited. I love this game so much tbh. Season 3 isn't better than season 1 and 2, but still... As long as we have more of TWD and Clementine, I'll be here.

  • I'm disappointed with the main menu copying Batman's style instead of maintaining its own. Plus I like to replay many scenes in the previous two games but the removal of the Rewind feature makes doing that just a huge pain in ANF.

Sorry wise I find it quite enjoyable even if Javier is pretty much every generically handsome short brown haired guy from every other video game.

  • I've enjoyed it well enough.

I think I'm one of those people who came out of Season 2 with any extensive good feelings at a minimum considering what happened there, particularly in the 2nd half. I was open to seeing what they would do in a Season 3 or whatever and even formed a few ideas of what I could expect.

For example, One thing I had hoped ANF would take advantage of was for flashbacks that developed previous characters in addition to Clementine. One of the many issues I had with Season 2 as it proceeded was that Clementine's character, opinions, and feelings about certain things felt like they were being ignored or downplayed in favor of giving Kenny and Jane prominence at every other junction. This even extended to certain characters, like Sarah, Mike, and Arvo himself, being boiled down to the basic characteristics and biased views for the sake of just having things happen with them without actually focusing on their characters, o the flashbacks could lead to some interesting retroactive development of a few characters.

Another thing I would've liked was the potential return of characters like Lily, Mike, and Arvo, who all just kinda disappear from the story during major moments and were kinda begging to have follow-ups on what they were up to in that time and how they changed since then. Arvo in particular is one who, if he does show up again, I hope they'll do the fair thing and try to develop him a little while he does whatever it is his role entails.

Unfortunately, as the teasers and early subscription information started coming out and we got a glimpse of the direction it was going in, what interest I had just slipped away over the extensive waiting periods; Clementine's redesign and the Amazon description in particular rubbed me the wrong way.

So, Episode 1 Parts 1 and 2 finally came out in Nov/December and, considering my expectations were pretty nil, I'd say I enjoyed it well enough. I mean, I had some problems(Ex.Mariana, Tripp, Badger) and concerns(Ex.Clementine, Conrad, Eleanor), but it was okay. Let's just say that Episode 2 is one I'm happily waiting for, shall we?

  • I don't hate Javier's character or his fam or anything, but i really want more focus on Clementine and her storyline. Everything else i was happy with :)

  • I don't actually think Lilly will ever come back, because in a mobile game based off of the comics, in the story missions you have an option to shoot Lilly. I think it was at the prison during the attack... but I don't remember getting the option, If i did though, I just shrugged it off and thought it was someone else named Lilly.

  • I'm digging it.

  • I enjoyed playing ep 1-2
But just give me more clem please why so short ;(

  • Actually it sounds like you were disappointed before you even got the game.

  • I really like it so far. I was sort of bummed that you don't get to control Clem but as I think about it, it's sort of neat. It's like we spent 2 games leading her and now she's been on her own for the past several years and we can't control her anymore, she's become what we and her circumstances have made her and we have to step back and see who she's become. Clem is still my favorite, the more she's in it, the better. I would love to see more interaction and contrast between sheltered Gabe and Clem, though I do not want any relationship to form between them. Just want to see more of the differences of Gabe getting to be a kid still for all those years and Clem having to grow up much faster.

  • I lowered my expectations because everyone else was getting so hyped up. When others get hyped, so di I, but lots of people tend to overhypse, so that's why I lowered my expectations.

  • Agreed!

I don't get how the game base became so focused on Clementine, anyhow. Like, I get it, she had a big part in Seasons 1-2, but if they were to focus on her in the third season, that'd be a bit much.

  • That's kinda what most of the fan base wants; more Clementine. Having her own season was enough, in my opinion.

I don't hate Javier's character or his fam or anything, but i really want more focus on Clementine and her storyline. Everything else i was happy with

  • This isn't even really her "season". There isn't too much more to go off of with her;

She's a survivor, now. She can get along on her own.

I enjoyed playing ep 1-2 But just give me more clem please why so short ;(

  • I don't even have the game. I watch others play it (I'm not big on the money spending on games unless I'm REALLY hyped to get them).

And no, I wasn't disappointed before it came out. I was annoyed with the fan base being so hyped up to see Clementine again and then ending up pissed that they see more Javier instead.

Actually it sounds like you were disappointed before you even got the game.

  • I like your optimism but the rest of S3 won't be wonderful in my opinion. This has been a disaster, as most Telltale games have been after 2012 in my opinion

  • If that is the argument made then they should've made that clear during S2 and ended it differently. They ended S2 in a way which it was heavily implied your ending/choices of S2 would shape the next season. To me ANF is the result of telltale opting out of making a legitimate S3 and just pandering to newcomers who are not accustomed to they're story formula.

    Ignore.

  • I lowered my expectations and episode 1 and 1.5 did still disappoint. Reminder that pregnant with lukes baby and kills her self is still the resolution of jane.

I cant judge if episode 3 is at my expectations as i am unable to play it

  • Even TFTB?

  • It certainly is a secret downgrade from telltales standards.

  • I WAS disappointed with this season, but at this time, I'm (at least mostly) not, albeit still very skeptical.

I was really hoping to take an interest in Javi's family, but it didn't take effect on everyone until episode 3. I don't want say what did it for me because I don't want TT staff to see it and be like "oh yeah, THIS is what we should stick to" (I'm sure it's happened before), but I am looking forward to what's in store for them. We still need to see more Mariana, though.

As for Clementine, who's the biggest (maybe only?) reason I have for trying to stick to the games, I feel like, at this time, her story treatment is a lot better here than it was in Season Two. She may not be playable as was advertised, but she drives a huge part of the plot, arguably as much as or more so than the Garcias, and although her personality has pretty much been railroaded (at least as far as I can tell, since I haven't seen multiple playthroughs of Above the Law), it does seem very in-character for her.

There's still a lot that can be improved, but I feel like we have reason to hope for the best now. I won't be surprised if this manages to surpass Season One levels of good or Season Two levels of bad, but I guess we'll have to keep up with ANF to find out.

  • Worst game ever? I've seen worse but i really don't blame those venting their frustration. Paying the same price (or more) as season 1 for this game with less quality in every way certainly pissed me off

  • Tales was a fun light hearted story and i enjoyed that about it but as a game i did not. I felt the gameplay was limited at times, and episodes weren't as long as i'd have liked but Tales was certainly not the worst.

I just can't enjoy their games anymore. Not after how brilliantly they made TWD S1

  • After being blown away by how awesome Telltale's TWD Season One and Two were in my book, I had really high expectations. At this point, TWD S1&2 became my favorite game of all time next to The Last of Us. That was early 2016. Never played any other Telltale-game tho, so I didn't know Telltale's quality dropped down over time and their top-writers left the ship long ago.

The release of ANF shattered all my expectations. Poor game-performance, a new engine that changed the look of the whole game for the worse and - most importantly - very poor writing with super short episodes. So yeah, "disappointed" is a very light word to describe my feelings on this franchise.
