Thoughts on Episode 3? *SPOILERS*

I thought I would just open up a discussion and just talk about the episode because I'm curious what others think. I really enjoyed the episode and I feel bad I shot Conrad in EP2 after watching a playthrough of him alive.

  • I also think that it would have been better to just go with Conrad's plan because Clementine gets more screentime and there is really no consequence if you betray her. Shooting Conrad was just the alternative choice without the beginning with Clementine. She doesn't really get mad at you and she treats you the same no matter what. I thought about going back and changing my choice before EP3 came out, but I just went with it because it would ruin the experience.

I felt bad about Conrad too, and how you get more Clementine screentime if you choose Conrad ending in EP2, but I remind myself that if you shoot Conrad you can say to the new frontier that Kate

    • "Means the world to me, and I couldn't bare to lose her."

I am really waiting for the option to tell "I love you" to Kate, and then bang, and if David can watch, better. Just hope this isn't just another Selina 2.0, my heart couldn't take it.

  • Yeah, that's true. I'm also surprised that Conrad will survive the entire episode if you give him the gun at the gates, and I thought that was pretty neat. Also, I don't know if it's just me, but the beginning of the episode felt like the animations were so much smoother and textures were improved.

Not sure if I loved it because it was a generally good episode, or I just loved it because I had really low expectations going into Above The Law. Either way it was a big step up from Episode 1 and 2. I'm also proud of telltale for making such a well written and interesting episode. Also choices that actually matter, I thought that I was playing TWD Season 1 at some moments

To talk about Conrad, I hope they don't kill Conrad off screen because I can see telltale doing some stupid shit like that where he ends up dead and Tripp mentions that he was killed by a walker while they were looking for Eleanor. I don't want telltale to pull a Nick/Sarah on Conrad, I really hope that they can show that they can change. I know that Telltale made Conrad a double determinant, but Telltale has to do a lot more to convince me that they're willing to take a huge step when it comes to making choices matter.

  • Nah even if the choice kill conrad dosen't matter or had a bad out comes and betraying clem give good outcomes i will still shoot conrad over and over and over and over and over
But who know maybe this choice had an outcomes later but i don't think so maybe TT dosen't planing to make fair or 50\50 for the choice any more as we seen in season one like help dog or carly or help larry or help kenny to kill larry

The plot is boring and the characters are just being dragged through the plot without much development.

I really don't see much of an improvement.

  • I loved it! So good. And David easily swooped in to become my favorite character.

Javier's family is the focus, and they've been getting a shit ton of development. I mean, you get all that backstory between Javier, Kate, and David in the flashbacks that give you a good idea on how you want to play Javi. Hell, the trailers even do a neat bait-and-switch with David, and make you think he's the sole leader and all around bad guy of the New Frontier until you discover things are far more complicated than they appear.

Conrad has a really great redemption arc if you decided to go along with his plan and gave him a gun in this episode. Telltale didn't just write off a determinant character for dead this time and allowed him make it through an episode with a few shining moments. Compare that to saving Nick from Walter back in Season 2 where afterwards he pretty much just sleeps through all of Episode 3, doesn't say much to anybody, and then gets an off-screen death Episode 4.

Anyways, this is going way better than the cabin group in my opinion.

Best. Episode. Ever. (Atleast in S3) Some of the choices were so hard for me. Like at the end, when you decide to leave David behind or stay with him, I couldn't choose so I ended up with Kate leaving (or trying to leave I guess.) And I don't know how I should feel about this whole situation with David. He is not as bad as I thought he would be and I think he's actually nice and brave. But then there is this complicated love triangle and Clem, who is not trusting him after all (which I can absolutely understand). But then, like at the scene at the door, she wasn't right about keeping him outside. Hnnnnng Idk, maybe I will change my decisions with "leaving him behind" and kissing Kate. I somehow feel bad...

  • When can you say that about Kate?

  • I loved it. I thought it was gonna suck but finally. That's how you do it Telltale. Easily the best episode of this season so far.

  • Very good episode indeed, was quite surprised with where David's character was going. I also got quite sad when Clem had to say goodbye to AJ.

    "Love you Goofball."

Way to go with making me feel sad again Telltale, you guys are masters at that. And weirdly in a good way.

  • All they need to add are hubs and maybe make the episode a little longer, but I really really enjoyed this episode. It's an improvement over the first two. Also, I am wondering what everybody did to Badger. I let him turn because I thought it was right for what he did to Marianna and Francine. He also said that he would have killed Marianna again if he had the chance and hearing that, I knew he was gonna get his ass whooped. I let him turn because I thought that it's like rotting in hell and he doesn't deserve an easy way out after what he did.

  • It made the scene even worse when A.J said "Clem!" I'm not sure, but I think that's the first time we, as the player, see him talk.

  • You just always find something to complain, don't you? I think it was improved and is 100% better than Episode 1 & 2.

    @Sir_Roswellington has got a point.

  • Man, I loved Lucille-ing the shit out of Badger. I want him out of this game ASAP. I actually like letting assholes suffer and turn but I just wanted him to see what happens if he fucks up with the wrong people.

I killed Max. I know, he wasn't that bad but he still agreed to steal stuff from other communities. I couldn't trust him enough so not taking any chances. At least I gave him a peaceful death.

  • Definitely an improvement over episode 1 and 2, but I still just find it mediocre. Although I've started to care about the Garcia family, I'm still far, far away from really getting invested in those characters.

  • If you don't accept Conrad plan, when Max asks you "why should I care what happens to (Kate)"
    You can answer:

    • She is a mother
    • Something something
    • I need her

If you choose I need her Javi says "I need her okay? She means the world to me and I can't bare to lose her"

When can you say that about Kate?

  • I was about to kill Max, but decided not to last second because I thought he would be evidence to the rest of The New Frontier, but it didn't end so well lol.

  • It's a lot different actually, Lonnie pushes the blame on David, and David begins firing, next episode may start off very different.

That's great and all except Javier and his family are super bland and don't really spark with me in any way and it doesn't help that the plot is going in an incredibly route and predictable direction.

I don't really even think they really develop as it just feels like they're just being dragged through plot point to plot point especially Clem and Javier.

I guess this is an improvement as far as pacing goes but a lot of these characters just don't have a lot of depth to the point where I have no incentive to care because the story is moving at such a fast pace.

  • It was a good episode. Now, as far as choices go, I can't say as of now because I haven't watched other people's play throughs, but apparently, Conrad plays a major role, so that's good to hear, it seems that there is good impact on our choices, Like I said with Ties That Bind, I like Javi, he seems like a great character, and we saw a lot of that in this episode, and several other characters got some pretty good development as well, especially David. The trailer definitely misled us, setting David up as this bad guy, but in my game, he was pretty good. He helped Javi out, he showed up at the garage, and wasn't nearly as much of a dick as I thought he was going to be, he seems like a great character. That being said, I did really like the sort of jealousy and brotherly conflict between them in the first episode, so I'm sad to see that plot line kind of dropped, but I like the direction they went in. This episode definitely moved the plot along, the issues within ANF go much deeper than I thought and are not because of David.

These are just my initial thoughts, I got done playing not 10 minutes ago, so I'm still trying to get my thoughts together. Overall, good episode, probably an 8.5/10, but subject to change depending on how I'm feeling later and how impactful our choices are.

I really liked this episode, Conrad was probably the highlight for me, which is pretty nifty.

  • I was always a dick to David in the flashbacks but in this episode i found myself siding with him, 100% the strongest episode yet.

  • edited March 2017

The opening flashback was fantastic. and did an amazing job setting up the family and Gabe's relationship with his father. I also really enjoyed how they treated Conrad in this episode! Telltale actually made the effort to keep him alive despite practically no one keeping him alive in episode 2, that's some good choice making! Also he's a double determinant character, and he's still treated like a member of the crew after that decision as well. We are long past the Nick days and I'm all for it! Also over 90 minute episodes for walking dead! Oh How I missed you! Only complaint I have is the cliffhanger being very blah.

  • It was better than ep 1 and 2, but I really didnt find it that good at all. Again Clem feels out of place, not to mention Joan's plan/motive really dont make a lot of sense. And the overall plot did not move anywhere. Ep 1/2 was "New Frontier BAD" then we play the whole ep 3 wondering if New Frontier is "bad" as we still assume they are just for "lol yeah they bad."

  • Definitely a better episode, I enjoyed it quite a lot. And I was surprised how ruthless I was.

  • edited March 2017

Well, I like that the whole situation with The New Frontier is not as black/white as it first looked like. Also it looks like the graphics improved a bit and the textures don't flicker anymore. But besides that, I don't see much of an improvement. What have they done all this time? Three months, 1/4 year?

The episode was short as fuq again and the jumps in the story were too big as well. Like, when you try to get into Richmond again after being kicked out.. they just skipp that. WHY?
Telltale could've given us a stealth-gameplay section, giving us time and space to explore things. Similar to how Clementine sneaked into The Cabin (with Nick and Co.) or Carver's office in Season 2. But no, they throw away the potential and just skipp it. Javier shows up inside of Richmond as if it was the easiest thing ever to infiltrate a heavily guarded, big settlement like this.

Gabe is so damn much annoying. One would've thought he got some brain, given the fact he had to live in a post-apocalyptic world full of zombies for multiple years. But nope, that kid is a lost cause. If he wants to stick with stupid decisions, fine. If he wants to stay with David, fine. But please don't throw this kid into my face all the time.

Anyway, this episode had some good moments.

    • A.J. might be still alive
    • Clementine is back
    • Badger and Max were put down and won't be a danger to anyone anymore.
    • Jesus mentioned the Kingdom and that opens the door for more potential

I love how there's like 2 different stories attached to this. The feud with New Frontier, and the classic love triangle between David, Javier, and Kate.

  • ehh, i don't know, I just didn't really like it, like it didn't grab me much at all - anyone else have this?

  • It was awesome episode seeing Javi turning into Negan :D Lucille confirmed for other episodes :D
