If you treat Gabe good and think about your choices carefully, you will have a better relationship with Gabe.
At the end of episode 4 Gabe will look more like Javi and finally listen well. He will stay with Javi when Javi tells him to do instead of running after Joan/Clint like a moron.

I've gotta go with Eleanor and Joan. The rest are likeable at least a little bit to me. Joan is pretty bland for a villain, and Eleanor is a… mores weak as they come lol. Badger I kind of like just because he made me laugh a few times with some of his lines.
Gabe would be my 3rd most hated character, but I did another play through and Gabe and javi have a completely different relationship this time around. I didn't kill Conrad, so he never sold me out, and I pretty much praised him any time I had the option to and I feel like I did pretty much everything right this time around with him, including siding with David completely. He was much more likeable that second time, and Kate was much less likeable. I completely understand why people don't mind Gabe now, because the change in perspective was pretty drastic.
You really should do an alternate playthrough with being nice to Gabe since the beginning and don't kill Conrad. Chose the option you couldn't kill Conrad when Gabe calls you coward.
You will see Gabe and Javi will have a very different relationship of trust. Gabe will be much more likable.
In the end of episode 4 you tell Gabe revenge is not worth his life and he finally listens to you.

Trying to attack a new frontier soldier was a dumb action. But he tried to be a 'man' wich he learned was a bad idea. In the end of episode 4 we will see a Gabe finally waiting for Javi's instruction because he learns from his mistakes.

But then I saw this (56:53).
After saving his life, this little prick does not even attempt to defend Javi in the slightest. He moved up to my hate list after seeing this scene.
