Why does each season have a screw-up character

edited May 2017 in The Walking Dead

Each season has a screw-up character...

Season 1-Ben is a shitbird

Season 2-Nick who doesn't think before he acts

Season 3-Gabe is useless

Who would be the season 4 character? Sorry if I offended you, I like Ben.

  • Well Ben tended to fuck up all the time, and sadly never got a redemption except if you save him in episode 4 and he stands up to Kenny and even then never done anything useful.

Let's not forget Nick in Season 2 who never done anything of note other than killing Matthew who was trying to help the group so yep there is another one.

Sarah was a sheltered girl who was not fit to survive in this world, and she got Reggie killed. Other than that she nearly got Clem, Luke and Jane killed in the trailer and either died there herself or made it only a little farther before dying anyway.

Gabe on the other hand has most of his bad points being determinant at least, and he actually helps when needed. So far Gabe has been the least useless, but still makes some bad decisions which sucks. At least he done some stuff though.

I really don't like that there has always been one person who continuously fucks things up for everyone and I hope if there is a Season 4 that we don't have a centralised screw up. Dole out the mistakes for everybody!

  • I think Nick was season 2's screw up. Sarah didn't do anything wrong. She just didn't do anything. Lol

I wouldn't count Sarah as a screw-up. I think Nick fits that better than she does. Also, does Bonnie count?

  • I don't think Bonnie counts

  • I really hate to say this, but counting Sarah as a screw up really shows how unsympathetic you are. If anyone who is vulnerable is automatically considered a screw up well I would consider you look up what being a screw up really is. Weak != Screw up.

  • Man, this thread is ableist.

That said, I noticed that, too. I don't think Sarah and Gabe were created for the sake of being screw-ups, but I do think that they might've eventually been written as such to create/continue it as a trend.

  • But... Sarah is weak...

  • Uhh... she risked Jane, Luke, and clementines life, she got Reggie killed too... Reggie was the best character... Also a few times with carver she screwed up... Also she was really annoying

  • "Reggie was the best character" ..how??? He was relevant long enough to get thrown off a roof to prove how rough and tough Carver was.

  • Sarah has PTSD.....

  • I see it as a way to test the player's resolve and morality in seeing how they handle and respond to less capable survivors. If done effectively enough (like Ben in Season 1), it makes for some really compelling scenes.

  • But... he was Reggie... he was the best character in all the walking dead.

  • Oh...

    Sarah has PTSD.....

  • sarah is more of an innocent child, nick was the screwup of season two. gabe doesn't fuck everything up, he's made mistakes just like everyone, but he has made some decisions that helped him become more useful

  • So was Clementine, and she wasn't sheltered/mentally ill in the same way that Sarah was. That didn't make her a screwup.

  • i agree with ben but come on he was a teenager who was holed up in a gym i mean how was he supposed to react and gabe is only 13 harmones and the world goeing to hell he was only 8 when it started and sarah she was a innocent kid her dad was just trying to protect her so you are just over reacting the whole situation

  • Me? I uhh... just said characters that messed up a lot.

  • No... sarcasm is the use of irony to mock or convey contempt, I'm being 100% serious, Reggie is the best character...

  • It's kinda ironic that Sarah died because her dad was too protective of her. That made her weak and that is why she wouldn't move out of the trailer park or couldn't get off the deck before it collapsed.

  • It's as simple as not every character can be a badass. Variety, diversity, etc... There are the very capable survivors then there are the people that aren't walking tanks.

  • Because Telltale doesn't know the meaning of the word original ^_^

  • That is known as bad parenting

  • Sarah wasn't a screw-up. She just didn't really do anything. Honestly, I'd say Nick fits the screw-up category a lot more than her.

  • I just feel like Gabe is even worse in a way, that he conciously makes bad decisions, like never listening to Javi or Kate

Gotta make Clementine the only competent kid character, amirite?

Also calling Sarah a "whiny little bitch" is all sorts of wrong. She and Ben were mostly just Telltale's punching bags.

Calling people shit birds, bitches and pieces of shit just because they make mistakes... thank god the walking dead isn't real. People are way too intolerant and violent.

  • Kenny allied Ben a shitbird

Same. In fact, part of the reason the Sarah Situation in Amid the Ruins was so bad was because they failed to convincingly portray her as such.
