Clem's Menstruation

I know there's another thread about Clem's period but the actual topic of that is different and I don't want to hijack it.

How did everyone feel trying to have that talk with her? I was kinda' shocked it came up but I kinda' suspected when I saw her rooting around the clinic and as soon as I saw Clem wince and grab her stomach, I knew what it was. I remember when my daughter first went through it. I wished I could have had a more thorough talk with her. I'm glad TellTale included it in the season because it'd be odd going forward if she never had to deal with it. Those of us it would occur to would be left wondering if she just wasn't having periods, which would make us wonder if she was ok, or we'd wonder if she was dealing with it off screen or if TellTale just didn't want to include it since no other woman except Kate has even hinted at menstruation issues.

  • It felt awkward but it was supposed to be that way, really looked uncomfortable for Javi.

  • I think it was really well done. For me it reminded me of how Clem is also struggling with her own, personal issues, not just the surviving part. It was a nice touch to the whole Clem growing up situation.

  • I agree. I was surprised to learn that she never learned what it was all about though. She was alone with Christa for 18 months. You'd think Christa would have explained it somewhere in that time since she'd have had to deal with it while with Clem. Even something super basic like

"Hey so this bleeding thing is normal. All women do it and you will too some day so when it happens don't worry. It's part of our reproductive cycle and it's how our body stays ready to have a baby."

  • Wow I totally forgot about Christa. Now that I think about it, it would've make sense that Christa told Clem about it but I found that Javi being the one to explain it to her gave Clem even more reason to trust him

I liked it. It was handled well, gave Clementine some character development, and discussed the topic of periods without straying into 'lol gross amirite xD' territory. Javier's reaction to it as an adoptive parent was mature and supportive.

  • That could've just been the huge stab wound he had right on his upper arm though. The one that needed medical treatment but wasn't getting any cause Clem sent Javi to find the supplies for his possibly severe injury...

  • I guessed it is because we don't really know her actual age, then with this information we can give her a relative age, she's a teen, probably around 13-14 years old

  • Actually she's around 12-13 years old.

  • Almost in the start of ANF.

    She's 13.

  • I wasn't really that shocked at all. It's kind of normal for girls her age. Plus, it's been upsetting and sort of hilarious to see how many people were so uncomfortable when it's a part of life for every woman. They probably should have seen it coming. They already tackled pregnancy, so why not tackle periods? Plus, it's a legit question when you consider the apocalypse and how you'd handle it.

  • Still have yet to figure out why people are so interested in this topic.

  • I liked it. I'm all for helping people, so I enjoyed being able to help explain.

  • It made me laugh, so well done telltale.

  • Nobody wants to hear anything about that!

  • You could help Clementine to understand how her body work and is changing !
There is nothing wrong about that it is a natural biologic process

  • Exactly! I don't know about you, but even knowing what period was and why, my first time I was quite shocked... I didn't expect so much bleeding, I was seriously scared to have to wear a diaper and didn't expect it to be so painful.

So the "I'm fine" from Clem I don't buy it, way too casual
I would surely be scared in her situation not knowing if it's normal that kind of pain etc...

  • I don't think it was a bad topic to broach and don't get why anyone was upset by it. It's a normal coming of age event.

  • I can't fucking believe the only scene bonding with Clementine and being a Big Brother is Javier explaining her why there is fucking blood pouring out of her vagina.

    Dammit, Telltale!

  • SURPRISE!

    HEALTHY CIS WOMEN HAVE PERIODS!

  • Teaching Clem about her period and growing up was the most emotionally invested part of the game besides Kenny's Ep4 flashback.

  • Cisgender. The opposite of transgender. Girl with girl body, boy with boy body.

I mean cis women because I'm pretty sure trans women don't have vagina.

  • Because it's a huge life change that girls go through, it's a big deal. It's also really scary and confusing (even for those educated about periods it's still shocking). And also something that I think a lot of people wonder about when it comes to the apocalypse, as in how it's handled with limited supplies. I think people liked that it gave Clementine and Javi a bonding moment, along with really helping the narrative that ANF touched on most with Clem; she's not a little girl anymore. She's growing up, changing into an adult. The scene was handled really well. It was much needed development for her character. Try to imagine being 13 years old in the ZA, bleeding while also experiencing abdominal pain. If you had 0 sex Ed education or nobody around to explain, I'm almost certain that you would think that you were dying or something was very wrong. I think it's pretty reasonable that people are focusing on it. I know it's not something men need to think about and it seems unnecessary or too gross. But it's not. It was good on TT to add it in.

  • I guess I'm dense or something because I never saw it coming. I wanted to be helpful so I picked accordingly, but I cringed myself into oblivion because of Javi and how awkward he makes the whole moment. Like, REALLY awkward my god why.
It was a bonding moment, I guess. And sometimes they can be awkward.

  • Her situation was plotted out well.

Remember when games were supposed to distract you from real life and were supposed to be fun?

    I don't see that anymore.

  • What?

Clementine says "all the women I've been with had it". She knows it's a thing. It's like most people haven't played the scene who are commenting here.

  • I think this has more to do with games confusing uncomfortable or unpleasant with "mature."

It's not "mature" to have a scene set up for the illicit reason of Clem (a supposed badass, even though all she did was whine and bitch) to very unconvincingly start blabbing about her period just cause no notable game has tackled that subject. It's almost like games have this "first come, first serve" mentality about how unsubtly they write in certain dialogue. And it's really annoying that people seem to find the scene to be genuinely convincing and well-woven into the already weak narrative when she's there just to whine and then turn around and let someone who was just stabbed fetch her rags for her to look at curiously cause I guess she's also mentally retarded.
