Well, safe to say I didn't expect things to escalate that badly between Richard and Alan :D I'm interested to see where will Alan go from here... hopefully he won't fuck over his brother because of this.

Haha, this was a very emotional moment for Richard. He didn't thought much here, it was mostly him venting his frustration at Alan and as such, things seriously escalated. For now, Alan is gone, but it should be clear that this won't be the last we've seen of him. Wether he will be a hindrance from there on or actually starts to better himself (keep in mind, a similar decision from Maya had a positive effect on Irving), remains to be seen.

I also noticed a certain familiar name dropped a couple times, and safe to say I'm hyped ;)

Aye, you spotted him =) I guess the storyline he will appear in is pretty clear now, or at least the location, even if it might still take me a little bit to actually introduce him. But he's coming and it'll be glorious :)

Edit: Having started a new page with this, take this link back to the latest post :)

Well, safe to say I didn't expect things to escalate that badly between Richard and Alan I'm interested to see where will Alan go from here

  • Since for some strange reason there is not a choice to accept to have a week for pay the debt I choose the choice that will be less of a problem in the future (since Bannister is not the only person that Keat owe money and the other creditors are people with a bigger influence in the city). And I found this choice more fun and I doubt that you will kill the new PoV in his second part.

Oh, my bad, I worded this terribly. Actually, asking for more time means accepting Bannister's offer of granting him more time, meaning this week. Keat won't ask for more, he'll just take the option that means not handing over his backpack. However, this will also mean Bannister will continue to bother him in the future, expecting to be paid and not letting go until he got what he is owed.

1)This Richard part was one of the best inside all the story! Alan deserve anything that Richard said to him (he is the main cause of Richard's wife death, leave Richard and Hal Recton alone to due during a raid and he don't even care to found an excuse for what he do!He make mistakes that hurt and expect that everyone say that it is fine!)

Ah, I am glad you consider it to be one of the best! I did not expect this, even if I had a lot of fun writing it. This is great, I'm always happy to hear stuff like that :) Alan surely had it coming, I agree there and he showed serious delusion when he tried to defend himself, making it only worse. He's not like Irving, someone who messed up by mistake but has fundamentally good intentions. He deliberately did all this, because when push comes to shove, Alan only cares about himself. Richard knew this much, but it took him until now to accept it.

2)btw what happened with Alan will be for sure a problem in the long run but hey!Let's live in the present!

I can confirm, this wasn't the last you have seen of him. Alan will return, probably changed by this experience, though if he will be humbled or only seeing himself confirmed in his self-centered worldview remains to be seen. There will be character development coming for him.

3)Now Mathea know that the Alley cats are not good people (but that was almost obvious) but she make the smart decision to not be part of the rebellion (even if that doesn't mean she will be safe if everything go wrong)

Yeah, Mathea had the suspicion all along and the only thing stopping her from making outright assumptions is the Sphynx at least trying to appear different. She sees herself confirmed now, but that doesn't mean she'll change whom she is. She will continue to work with the Sphynx when it comes to healing people and she will not go as far as to play an active role in any event leading to open rebellion, but she can be counted as an ally of Team Richard still, as she is definitely willing to assist them in some passive way (like she did with Kersea here). Most importantly though, she knows what to expect from the Sphynx and will do her best to keep her distance.

4)It seems that Samantha storyline will start with the meeting of the Rebellion members!I'm really curious to read it and see again some old faces!

Aye, a couple of old faces and the first time all of these characters are together in one spot. Several characters who haven't been seen at all in this chapter yet will appear and naturally, Samantha herself will be among them. I feel like this meeting should hold some interesting moments and revelations ;)

5)Keat the Trickster is the new PoV! If I must be honest I'm not too surprise of your choice because the last time we see him he said that he will come back to Oldtown and you obviously need at least a new PoV for that city after Jaron and John will left it

You are not too surprised? Huh, that is a surprise in itself for me, I really thought nobody would even remotely guess that Keat, the most obscure of side characters, is the new PoV. But yeah, it had technical reasons, as I need a new Oldtown PoV (though Keat will not remain the only one), though Keat's role as a thief also makes him perfect for the type of storyline I have in mind.

6)Wow Keat! You really are something because have a debt with so many important people of Oldtown underworld must not be an easy feat!

It is a mixture of debt and having stolen from some of them. He has, for example, gotten a credit from Bannister, but he has stolen from Hishi. It is his hope that the coin he brings back will be enough to clear his name, because he has realized that he bit off way more than he could ever hope to chew when dealing with Hishi and Tavner's underlings at once.

7)Theodan Ballister seems to be a man with a short temper that you won't like to meet in a dark alley...at least he is a dog person!

A dog person he is, probably still the best thing I could say about him. Thorrin (not Theodan ;)) is quite a piece of work and Keat has done a stupid thing when dealing with him. There is a reason why he managed to remain independent during the past gang war in Oldtown and it is because dealing with him is almost always more trouble than it is worth.

8)I'm curious to see Keat meetings with his siblings and discover who protect them in his absence (will be a new character or someone that we don't see for a long time like Samuel (the Puffer one) or ROACH!? XD)

It won't be Roach, because Keat is not stupid XD That being said, Roach will appear in Book 2 as well, I can confirm him to appear. Same goes to Samuel Puffer. Those are good guesses and I plan to give an answer either at the end of this chapter or the start of the next one :)

9)In the end you mention another new character called Vogero but he seems to work for Tavner...I think that Vogero is the guy that act as a new crimelord while the merchant is his sponsor and true leader

A very good guess. Of course, there is a connection between Vogero and Tavner and both will be major characters in Book 2 Oldtown. And I like your speculation. Something similar worked well for Mullendore, even if he took a more active role with the Solvers. So, all I can say is, both names should be remembered, because they will have a lot to do in the things to come.

[Refuse and ask for more time] Since for some strange reason there is not a choice to accept to have a week for pay the debt I choose the c

  • I knew we shouldn't have gotten angry with Alan. Now he is gone for who knows how long and on Richard's badside. Despite all his flaws, he is a useful guy to have around at times. His basically that wildcard that turns out to be an ace all along. Plus I think there may have been a way to mend their family.

Hm, it was a very emotionally charged decision Richard made here, which is not always a good thing from a rational standpoint. Alan surely wasn't entirely useless, but then again, he has done more harm than good and was quite a load to have around at times. One thing I can confirm though, there is no way to fix the Harking family as long as Alan does not want to. There's only so much Richard can do to accomodate Alan and he really did everything and went out of his way, with Alan still being entirely ungrateful and remorseless.

Plus, I wasn't sure about telling Mathea about the Alley Cats, but seeing that she isn't going to oppose them puts me a little to ease. I can't wait to see the meeting of the rebels. All they need to do is somehow get Ryler and Arthur in on this and then they'll have a whole new view of the Alley Cats' backstory/weaknesses, as well as the information of Oakheart's treachery. And then there is Kasyn Luck who we have yet to learn more about. All these potential allies that need to be gathered.

Yeah, opposing them really wouldn't have been Mathea's style. She sympathizes with their intentions at the very least, but not being a violent person, she will not take part in something that could very well end in violence. And well, there are surely more allies who have not been involved in this yet. Arthur has kept his knowledge a secret and Ryler is a loner by nature, neither having much of a connection to the others. They each hold important pieces of information that the rest doesn't know yet, so it remains to be seen when/if they will decide to work with each other. Perhaps it will be too late by then ;)

  • [Hand over the backpack] Let's be nice to the homicidal man. Maybe he only takes what is promised and not everything? I can guarantee if we don't hand this bag over we are going to lose it and he's going to murder Keat. If we do give it to him, we never have to see him again.

    Also, Keat, my favorite.

And I got a bad feeling about Alan. Richard should have been nicer, the guy is going through tough times. If Leonard is at danger because of Richard, I will go back to my Harking hating in full.

And the ominous wolf howl in Richard's part, along with the howls in Keat's part, so close to Halloween makes me think Liquid should do a deliberately non-canon horror part. Wolfius too, jeez, I'm scared of that guy.

Well, he has waited for a long time and Bannister is nothing if not patient, even if his demeanor doesn't immediately show this. His way of dealing with someone such as Keat is to threaten them, while also giving them a bit of a way out. A bit like a good cop/bad cop act with just one person. Either way, he wins, so he can afford such games.

Well, he has indeed mostly abandoned Oldtown, though not entirely by choice. It was always the plan that he would eventually take over Raylansfair together with Petyr, but he did not want to abandon Oldtown completely. The problem here is, the Chapter 6 finale kinda ruined this for him. It has been mentioned before, way worse than the physical wounds he suffered has been the crippling blow this dealt to his reputation. While there is no evidence, the city itself has nonetheless become too dangerous for him to manipulate any further. And so, he completely focussed on Raylansfair and the big game. With Oldtown being his pet project, as well as his home, he is definitely not happy with this development. That being said, he has always been someone with big goals, so being able to pursue them in his current position is kind of comforting for him.

Well, keep in mind Alan has been the one who wanted to throw Leonard out from the very beginning. If anything, removing Alan from the equation has probably made things less complicated. Though it remains to be seen what he is going to do now, being kicked out of the house and all.

Huh, that would be interesting, as well as something I'd actually love to do! I am not sure how well I can write horror, but maybe I should make it a habit to regularly write non-canon one-shots dealing with certain events. There seems to be a lack of Westerosi holidays to compare, but I'm sure I can think of something fitting.

Oh, so that's why he seems completely delusional. He should know it doesn't work when its just one cop. And I guess he does win regardless, but this definitely would not work with everyone.

  • Well I'm not surprised from the outcome of Alan getting kicked out. He certainly had it coming all the way from Chapter 3 from Book 1. He will not be missed. Until he decides to hold a grudge and come back with a vengeance.

It really has been a long time coming. With Alan, Richard himself needed a lot of time to realize just how selfish and petty his brother truly is, but this part finally opened his eyes. And he definitely will not miss him. Alan though, he might come to miss what he had here, terribly so.

I'm actually really surprised with Keat getting the newest PoV and he is coming to Oldtown, of all the places in the world. I think he will be great and will hold Oldtown interesting for his storyline

At least not everyone has seen him coming :D I am glad you are interested in his storyline. I can confirm, he will not be the only Oldtown PoV, as two existing PoV's will have extensive storylines there as well, even after Jaron and John have left.

Do not worry, I saw it =) The new PM system is surprisingly reliable, this I must admit. So, don't be afraid, I will answer. Thing is, I have a serious backlog with PM's, so I cannot promise to manage it today, but I try my best to reply as soon as possible, at latest tomorrow.

Keat is going to refuse to hand ofer his backpack and he will ask Thorrin for more time

Huh, that was an interesting start to begin his storyline. Next part, we'll learn just what you can expect from Thorrin. He is probably not going to gut Keat where he's standing, but you can never know, maybe he won't be as happy as he seems to be. But I am glad the PoV was generally received favourably. Keat has been an unusual choice for me as a PoV because of how small a character he has been so far, but he won't remain the only minor Book 1 character to receive such an upgrade in Book 2 ;)

The next part is hopefully going to be out today. I am currently writing an Edrick part, but there is a good chance that he won't remain the only PoV in the next part. We'll see how it works out, I might add a PoV for Kyra or Arthur into the mix. Last time we saw Edrick, he was brought to Viveka Codd, who decided to take him and his entire group as her prisoners, to ransom them back to their families or to enslave them if they won't be worth much coin. However, she treated them fairly, giving them an acceptable room to stay in, not the cold cell Edrick expected. That being said, when he insulted her, she responded by cutting his cheek with her spear, though she later sent her young cousin, Sylvi, to treat Edrick's wound. Though reluctant to accept her help, Edrick ultimately allowed her to do just that. Meanwhile, depending on whom the second PoV will be (if there will be one at all), we're going to see the return of Kyra or Arthur. Last time, Kyra witnessed the arrival of Arrec Mallister and his daughter, Elaena. As it turns out, the Lord of Seagard came to Harrenhal for a very specific reason, namely to wed his daughter, a girl of thirteen years as it must be said, to none other than Harmund Hoare. The implications have been so horrible that even Harmund himself ended up disgusted by the offer, with him and Harrick being on the same side for once and arguing against the betrothal, while Harren was more receptive to Arrec's arguments. Meanwhile, Arthur had a talk with Berrick Rivers, the new blacksmith of Raylansfair and bastard son of Lord Strong. He reminisced about his father's shortcomings, fearing he'd end up just like Hackor one day. Despite this, he decided against spending time with his sister, whom he had largely avoided while they both grieved for their father. Instead, he decided to check up with Ryler, who has been brought to Mathea's clinic earlier this day (you remember the scene from Richard's parts) after being attacked by a wolf and bitten in the leg. Arthur's hope is to learn more about the still present danger of Wolfius, whom the current commander of the city guard, Daemion Stratford, does not see as much of a threat anymore.

Now, before I come to the link stuff, there is a small announcement to make. You hopefully remember the Samuel Harrington backstory part @NightShroud18 has written about two months ago. Well, he has finished the second part of this series and wishes to share it. It's a very well-written part and hopefully, you will enjoy it as well :) NightShroud, you can now post it whenever you like!

And now, without further ado, the useful links, for as long as they still have to be here. Hopefully that won't be for too long though, I really can't wait for the main post to return:

    Samuel

He awoke during late midday. It has been a few days since Samuel practiced with his brother. His ankle has prevented him from movement for a few days, but today was a special occasion. Today was Samuel’s twelfth name day. He has agreed with Anna and Cedric to meet with some of their friends, to pick an appropriate present for him and spend some time alone. Anna was bringing her best friend along, the beautiful Juline.

As for Ryder, he said he would join them later, as he said he had an errand to make. Samuel was anxious for his celebration, and was curious about what type of presents he would get. He was anxious to see what he will receive this year, maybe his very own sword!

“Good morning, Samuel! Whose name day is it today?” His mother looked beautiful as ever, as she gave him a warm hug and a kiss on his forehead. Samuel could feel his cheeks blushing from embarrassment. “It is mine, mother” He could not help but give her a wide smile, showing her how happy he was. “Of course, son, I always remember. You are growing into a young man quickly. How is your leg feeling today?” His mother asked kindly. Samuel moved his leg but the pain was very minimal and it did not affect his movements at all. He was ready to set out to find his siblings. “Much better, the ointments you gave me really helped me. Thanks, mother. Where is Cedric and Anna? It is almost time we depart.” Samuel looked around but he did not find any trace of his brother and sister. “They are outside, sweet one. Juline came a little early so they met her outside.” She said, Samuel was most anxious to see Juline. She always let her long blonde hair loose and wore fine clothing. Her family is not big since she is their only daughter and in training to be a handmaiden with Anna, but Samuel liked her none the less.

“I see. Well I had better meet them then, we will bring everything we need from the market. Anything you need mother?” Samuel smiled as he finished. His mother pulled him into another tight hug. “Just your safety, sweet one. Spend time as much as you like and take care of your siblings. May the Old Gods watch over you.” His mother messed up Samuel’s hair as she kissed him farewell. And now, Samuel was smiling as he reached for the door to get outside.

“Ah, took you long enough Samuel! Slept well?” Cedric spotted him approaching the little group. Cedric was only ten years old, but his enthusiasm was still burning deep within him. He was standing next to Anna and Juline, who were smiling as they saw him coming out of the house. “Well enough, little brother. You ready to get to the market?” Samuel asked and tried to hide the fact that he was blushing after seeing Juline. She looked radiant as ever with her golden hair. “Good morning, Juline. Thank you for joining us.” Samuel greeted her as he stretched his arm to shake her hand. Juline smiled as she accepted his gesture. “It is not a problem, Samuel. You’re growing into a fine man.” Samuel was pleased with this comment. “Not as fast as I should, but thank you anyway” Juline giggled at his remark. “Anna was just telling me what she wants to get for you. Oh, you are going to love it! We are going to-“
She was cut off by Anna anxiously “Don’t Juline! This is a surprise so don’t spoil it.” Samuel was a little disappointed by this, he couldn’t keep his curiosity back any longer. “What is it? I want to know what you got.” “Do not worry, Sam. I will give it to you once we pick it out for you. We really hope that you like it. I promise your name day will be very special.” Anna bent down slightly to give her brother a hug, a gesture Samuel found embarrassing, but sweet none the less.

The group began to walk towards the market place for Torrhen’s Square, it was never crowdy and Samuel enjoyed that. He did not need to worry about losing his siblings or Juline in them since the location is always spacious and everything was easily spotted. The weather was cool, but it was not snowing today. Juline and Anna were leading the path in the front, while Samuel and Cedric followed close by. However, he was intrigued by Anna’s conversation with Juline, they were whispering and giggling along the way. He had no idea what they are talking about, but it did not bother him too much. Samuel thought it wouldn’t be appropriate to invade their privacy, instead he spoke with his younger brother. “Cedric, I’ve been meaning to ask you something” Samuel started, “Ryder and I, we have been training with our sword replicas for quite a while now. I’m just curious why haven’t you joined us in any of it, or at least why you didn’t come along to observe?” He did not want to push too far, but he needed to know. “Samuel, how many fighters do we have? Father and Ryder are already experienced warriors, and you are already on the path to follow them. I don’t see why all of us must become knights or guardsmen. Besides, my interests lie within picking up a hammer and anvil to forge items. It is where my talents lie within. I know you and Ryder will fulfil your duties as soldiers, so let me fulfil mine as well” Cedric stated dully, but something he said seemed off. “I understand, brother. Wait, have you already crafted something?” He asked, and in an instant, Cedric looked away from him and focused on the ground. “Maybe. But I am not telling you so don’t ask again.” Samuel wanted to know what his little brother up to, but alas it seemed that he would not speak further of this topic.

They were getting closer to the market place that they were hoping for. As expected, the area was not crowded which made navigating an easy task. Their father would be patrolling the area at a time like this, but he was not anywhere in sight. In fact, Ryder was nowhere to be found either. He spoke of having an errand to fulfil yesterday, and Samuel absolutely detested that. He hated the fact that his brother kept him in the dark, keeping secrets from him. But whatever he wished to do, Samuel would find out eventually. “Have to say ladies, it is always a pleasure to spend my day with you.” He tried to flirt with Juline, in which Cedric reacted by simply chuckling. Samuel gave him a cold gaze, implying he will strike him if Cedric does that again. The girls did not notice, they both turned around, smiling. “Thank you, little Sam.” Juline spoke first, in which Samuel gave her a frown, “I am not ‘little’. And do not call me Sam, I hate that nickname.” “Whatever you say, Sammy.” She chuckled. He hated being treated like that, not taken seriously. But he ultimately decided to let the banter go. “Are we close?” He asked to distract them from the embarrassment. Anna nodded, “Almost there, brother. In fact, to keep the surprise hidden, I’ll need Cedric to tag along with me to the shop I’m after. We need to go to the market to buy the ingredients for tonight’s celebration. You don’t mind hanging out with Juline until I come back?” Samuel felt his heart skip a beat, he wanted this very much so. Perhaps if he plays his cards correctly, he might get his first kiss tonight! The thought of it excited him, but he had to keep calm and collected. “Yeah, of course. You just take care, sister. You too Cedric, take as much time as you need.” He finished, but noticed that Anna was resisting an urge to laugh. “Time, huh? You will need more than that if you want to-” She was going to mock him about Juline, he was sure of it. He had to stop her before she sabotaged him completely. “Stop, Anna! Just go get whatever you need to get.” He almost yelled, unintentionally raising his voice. “Alright, sorry. Just remember to have fun. I will meet you back at home” She apologised, as she messed up his hair. Juline was simply smiling, and he was not sure if she was happy to spend time with him, or if it is meant to further mock him. Cedric was polite enough to his brother and did not show a reaction. Afterwards, Cedric grabbed Anna’s hand as they left, waving off to the group. They will meet again later in the day, but Samuel will miss them. Except for making fun of him. “So then, shall we get going?” He asked Juline who had a smirk on her face. “Of course, Sam. Let us have some fun.”

For the next few hours, Samuel and Juline spent their time chatting about a lot of different things. It ranged from their interests, to legendary stories about honoured knights and kings. Samuel was inspired by many of these stories, and he would never get tired of them. Among his favourites were; King Jon Stark, who sailed against the pirates, freeing the White Knife, and building the Wolf’s Den in its place. Another was King Theon Stark, the man who had raised fleets with the Boltons to free Bear Island and conquer Cape Kraken while slaying a Hoare. Samuel was grateful to his older brother, Ryder, who had told him of such tales when he was a boy. And thanks to these stories, Samuel was determined to forge his own story. He would not let the fact that he was low born stop him, he will become a legend among men. And he will outclass and outshine his brother in every way. He will make his family proud one day.

Despite his dreams, he wanted to inform Juline of them. Maybe she would develop feeling towards him, just like he did with her. The girl was radiant in every way, her golden hair was shining brightly, her eyes were of a deep emerald green, her complexion was perfect and Samuel did not mind if she was slightly taller and older than him. Furthermore, she was kind and gentle to all her friends, and her skills at being a handmaiden were undeniably better than Anna’s. He just did not know how to express his feelings towards her, and if she ever will return those feelings. He feared feeling alone and helpless, but now is the time to tell her. He must try with her and hopefully, she sees him as he sees her.

“So Juline, I need to ask you something.” Samuel mumbled, as he was clearly struggling to find the right words for this situation. Juline could barely hear him, “Yes?” And then, his heart was furiously pounding. Faster and faster, he was afraid if he was visibly sweating. He hated showing his weaknesses in front of others. “Uh.. I.. Umm..” It was obvious that he was nervous, and thus he had to say something quickly to distract her from noticing too much. “Umm hey, are you joining us for the celebration?” It was a dull question, but it was the first one that came up on his mind. Now that he can think about it, celebrating each family member’s name day was always a private tradition. Each time, the family would gather together, sit at their dining table, and have their feast. It was very standard way of living, because by all means their financial status was never in jeopardy since all of the family members had a role to fulfil and obtain a steady source of income.

“I’m afraid not, Sam. My mother needs me back home soon to help her with the chores, she can get quite nasty if I’m not there by dusk. Besides, I am sure your family would appreciate it if they get to spend time alone with their little hero” Juline gave him a giggle and Samuel felt a sting of sadness because he would have really liked if she joined him. He wanted to lean in for a kiss, but Samuel knew this was not the time. He desperately wanted her, but she seemed so far out of reach. “Oh dear, it is starting to look darker. We must have spent a lot of time together haven’t we?” She was smiling as she said this, it was a look of geniality. “I must head back now, dear Sam. But thank you for spending time with you. It was actually not bad.” Samuel smirked at this. “Not bad? Is that it?” She laughed at his response, “Well I can give you something else.” As she finished, she leant downwards and gave him a kiss on his left cheek. Samuel’s heart was racing again, and it was much faster than it ever was. His face turned bright red. He could not find the right words to say in this situation. He was speechless. “Goodbye Samuel. And again, Happy name day.” She bid him farewell, as she started to walk away from his sight. It was not exactly what he was hoping for. But it was still very romantic none the less.

However, Samuel noticed something very strange about where she was going. Juline was heading in the opposite direction of her home. Instead, she seemed to take the path of the market place. Samuel suspected that maybe she was going to meet Anna and Cedric, but even then, they should have finished gathering everything they need by now. So, he decided to quietly follow her, to make sure that she is okay, of course. He kept a comfortable distance away from her, but he was making sure she could not seem him. The crowd was starting to fade as everyone was heading back towards their homes, but Samuel was solely focused on Juline at this point. She was reaching an alleyway, where she met a man who was wearing a hood that covered his face. It was impossible to identify him, but he looked taller than Juline. She gave him a hug, and held his hand, as they started to walk into the narrow, empty alleyway. Samuel felt a raging anger rise inside of him. Who was this man? And why did Juline decide to leave Samuel to go see him? The more he thought about it, the more he grew confused and angry, so he decided to follow, to get a closer look and have a better understanding of the situation he was witnessing.

Samuel entered the alleyway, cautiously and quietly. It was not too dark and Samuel did not difficulty with his vision in the dark. It was empty and he did not see any one in sight. He heard some muffled sounds, but he could not make out anything from the conversation. He was nervous, scared if anything has happened to Juline. Moreover, he was wary of that figure. Just who was that man? Samuel was determined to find some answers, if he sees them. And at last, he saw them. The man had his back turned on him, he was pressing his lips against Juline, but it was not forced. She in fact embraced him tightly, wrapping her arms around his shoulders. They did not seem to notice Samuel, who now hid around the corner, peeking just enough to witness what was unfolding before him. He did not have clear sight of the man, his hood may have been down, but he could not see his face. Juline, however, seemed to enjoy what was happening. She was even slightly moaning, as she dug her fingers into the man’s back. The man responded by moving his hands downwards, and onto her chest. They were preparing to undress and Samuel’s angry shot up again. He clutched his fist hard, resisting the urge to walk up to them and expose Juline, hurting the man in the process. He could not stand the sight of them together, he could not comprehend if this was real. In the end, he could not bear watching them anymore, he was too shocked and angry at what was happening. She lied to him! She did not feel a thing towards Samuel! Her kiss was false! And in the end, Samuel felt crushed. He wanted nothing more but to hurt this man, to make him suffer for what he is doing. But in the end, that was not the right choice to make. Instead, Samuel started to run, exiting the alleyway, and headed towards his home.

He felt a range of thoughts racing his mind as he was walking back home. What was he supposed to do now? How can he celebrate his name day feeling this way? Who does he tell? He suddenly felt angry, at Juline, at the mysterious man and most of all, himself. Because he was too weak, he could not impress Juline. Because he felt lonely again. Because he lost a woman he loved about to another. He should have told her how he felt! But he was too scared of rejection. Ultimately, he decided to worry about it tomorrow. Now was not the time to be angry, now was the time to celebrate with the only thing Samuel has. His family.

As he opened the door to his home, he noticed not everyone was here. His mother, Anna and Cedrick were waiting for him. And as soon as he walked in, they gave him happy smiles of their own. Seeing them made Samuel feel joyful again, his mother gave him a hug. “Welcome back, Samuel. Did you enjoy your time out?” Samuel gave her a weak smile, as he tried to mask his pain. “Yes, mother. It was wonderful” She seemed pleased with that answer, “Splendid! We prepared a grand meal for you to enjoy, tonight is for you to enjoy, my boy.” She took his hand, with Anna and Cedric following behind. The room was brightly lit with the fireplace burning firewood, and candles were everywhere to keep the light on. He saw the meals that his family prepared for him. And it was grand indeed. It was a collection of sausages, rabbit stew, honey cakes and mutton. They were a remarkable sight, as every time the dining table was filled with such wonderful food. “This is too much, mother. You did not need to do all of this.” He told her, but she seemly did not seem bothered by it. “Hush now, my son. All of this is for all of us to enjoy. Anna bought all of it and cooked them with me on my instructions. This is your day. And we will celebrate it because we are a family. Your father will be running a little late, and your older brother will soon be here.” He was very grateful for this, more than grateful. He did not know how to thank them for such an occasion, it truly meant the world to him. He seemed to forget all about what he saw with Juline. “All of you, thank you truly. I honestly don’t know how to thank you.” He was smiling now, truly, and happily. “Well you can start by helping us with eating all of this food! Come now, let us eat!” Anna said enthusiastically. Samuel sat next to his mother, with the opposite end sat Anna and Cedric. There were only two seats that were empty, one reserved for his father, and Ryder. He could understand his father being late, he had his duties as a member of the guard. But Ryder? Why did it take him so long? Just, where was he? He wanted to ask his family, but did not wish to interrupt the festivities. Everyone was talking and making jokes, discussing small gossip and chores. Samuel was truly lucky to have a loving family, it was something that no one can take it away from him. His thoughts were interrupted by his mother, “By the way, how is Juline? Anna told me you spent time with her alone.” And again, his heart sank. He thought about telling them what he saw. Venting about his rage and disgust. But what good would it do? It was simply not appropriate to discuss such stories on his name day. He wanted his family to be happy. “It was good, we walked and talked about different things. Nothing special really, mother.” She was smiling of course, he told her how he felt about Juline and no one else. She understood how he felt, and she would support him until the end. It is just a shame that all of it was for naught.

As soon as they finished eating to their heart’s content, Cedric sprang up from his chair, “Now let’s get to opening some presents! I can’t wait to show Samuel what we got him!” Cedric was energized for this, more so than Samuel was himself. His mother looked excited too, and Anna was smiling. “Very well Ced, since you are so anxious, show Samuel what you got him” In only a second, Cedric rushed towards the other end of the room, and grabbed an object. “Happy name day, brother.” He placed a golden ring on the table, it was a welcome sight. It looked a perfect fit Samuel’s finger, and as he picked it up, he noticed that it was made from actual gold. He was proud of Cedric for taking the time to create something for him, much less give it to him. Its craftsmanship was not bad, but Samuel did not care about the quality. It brought a smile on his face. “Gods, Cedric. This looks amazing! So, you did forge something after all! Why didn’t you tell me?” Cedric looked at him with a hint of pride in his stance, “I did not want to ruin the surprise. The blacksmith gave me a tiny piece of gold ore as a reward for my services. With it, I forged the ring you are holding. It’s actually my first piece of work so far.” It was a gift the pleased Samuel, and he truly hoped that his brother would create more of this. “Thank you for your effort. Much appreciated, little brother. Keep working hard.” As he finished, he placed the ring onto his index finger. As suspected, it was a perfect fit. Cedric looked as if he was tearing up, he got closer to his brother and pulled him in for a brief hug. He was glad that Cedric was progressing with what he wants to do in the future.

“I’m next then!” Anna stood up, and took out a small wooden box which she placed in front of Samuel. “Open it, brother. I hope you like it.” Samuel gently opened the box, and found a small piece of jewellery placed inside of it. It certainly looked like a symbol, but he could not recognize it. “What is that bird?” Anna seemed to giggle at his question “Silly, it is not a bird. It is a phoenix.” Samuel was still confused, “What is a phoenix?” He never heard of such a creature. “I found it on the market the other day, and I immediately thought of you. You see a phoenix is a mythical creature, made from fire itself. It represents strength, as it was said to burn their enemies. They can never die, since they are reborn from their ashes.” Anna explained, “You can look at it as a symbol of our family bond, we may die in the future, but our hearts will always be one and never ending.” Samuel felt touched by her words, it almost brought him to tears. It also looked expensive, even though it was not made from gold. He felt compelled to thank her. “Sister dear, it is simply gorgeous. And you are right, our bond is what defines our family. Thank you.” He placed the necklace around his neck, and it looked beautiful. She gave him a brief hug as well. A gesture he found very sweet, he just wished he could hold on a little longer.

He heard the door open and make a loud creak, he turned around just in time to spot Ryder. He had that huge smile he always had on his face, that confident attitude always got under Samuel’s skin. “Hello everyone. Sorry I’m late.” Cedric was excited, as he ran towards his brother for a hug. Samuel did not even bother to give him a response, due to the mood he was in. Instead, his mother got up. “My dear boy its late, where were you?” As Cedric separated from Ryder so he can speak, “My sincerest apologies, mother. I got caught up with my friends and did not notice the time after I grabbed Samuel’s present.” Instantly, Samuel doubted this information for some reason. “Speaking of, where is my little man who turned twelve?” He walked towards Samuel, and messed up his hair. Samuel gave a loud groan. “What do you want?” Ryder’s smile never faded from his face, “Why, to celebrate your name day of course. I got you something special, little brother. I knew you always wanted it for a long time.” As he finished, he put a sheathed dagger on the dagger and in front of Samuel’s eyes. Instead, his body shot up with excitement. Indeed, Samuel was hoping for a dagger for a long time. Cedric gasped in shock, while Anna’s eyebrows went up. It was a simple one, with a golden hilt. “I am… astonished. How did you get this?” He asked in surprise. “Rather simple really, my friend owed me a favour. So, I asked him if he could get his hands on. Didn’t tell me how though. Better to keep it that way though. The only one who seemed to disapprove was mother, “Ryder! I told you before, do not bring any weapons to this house. They are dangerous!” She was not mad or angry, but her voice gave away concern and worry. Ryder attempted to calm her down. “Relax, mother. We obviously will establish some ground rules about it. We won’t use it in the house, and Samuel will be held responsible if anything happens.” Everyone seemed to chuckle except for Samuel, he will take this very seriously. He knows what a weapon is, he won’t use it carelessly or without reason. He is almost a man grown now. His mother sighed, “You know what, fine. Just this once. As long as I don’t see it, I don’t know about it. Deal?” And Ryder nodded his head in approval. “Agreed.” And then, their mother exited the room, probably to go take care of something. “Now with that out of the way, I need to eat because I’m starving.” He sat next to Samuel, who was still admiring the dagger. Anna placed a bowl of rabbit stew and a loaf of bread in front of Ryder as he began to eat. As much as he hated thanking his brother, he had to. “Thank you, Ryder. This truly means the world to me. I will treasure it with all my heart.” Ryder just gave him a smile. “Do not mention it, brother. It’s your name day, just doing my duty. I know how much this means to you. This is your first weapon, and it is said that the greatest weapons have names. So, what will you call it?” Samuel tried to think of a few names, but nothing sprang into his mind that was original. He wanted to give it a unique name, one that signifies meaning. “I don’t know, I guess I need time to think about it.” Ryder nodded, “That is fine, take your time. And just a reminder, tomorrow is the perfect time to teach you some techniques about how to use it. Better be ready.” He smiled as he finished. Samuel also couldn’t help but smile, he was already filled with excitement. With this, he can finally make progress, and one step closer to become a legendary knight with his brother. He gave his brother a hug as well, longer than the others. “Ryder, thank you. Truly.”

    End of Part II

  • Ah, a wonderful part :) I am glad you managed to finish it in time, especially as it seems I won't be able to finish the part in time, that'll be something for tomorrow then. But yeah, this part is amazing. Like the first one, it gives a great deal of insight into the younger Samuel, before he became the stone cold killer he is in the current events, though I feel this one showed even more of him as he used to be and went deeper in exploring his feelings, the naivety he still has, but especially also the connection to his siblings. That actually makes it all the more tragic what he eventually became in the story proper, perhaps not an evil man, but a very cold, dulled guy who has lost so much this way younger version of him still has. Ah, thank you for writing, this makes Samuel's development to come all the more fun for me =)

Thank you for the announcement, my friend. I'm excited to share this next part and while I'm sorry that I couldn't get it out faster, I'm st

  • Alright, apologies for keeping you waiting a little longer. Writing took me longer than before, partially because it turned out, I was able to stick with my initial plan to feature Edrick in a full-length part, instead of adding a second PoV. I hope you enjoy the result! Also,if you haven't read it yet, check out NightShroud18's part about the backstory of Samuel Harrington right above :)

    Edrick

With a sigh, Edrick gave the girl a nod. “Fine”, he said. “But no tricks” Sylvi rolled her eyes. “Sure, I'm about to strangle you with these bandages”, she said in a deadpan tone, though noticing the hostile glare on Alphyn's face, she flinched. “That was a joke”, she clarified swiftly.

Edrick frowned, as she got to work. Pulling out a small piece of linen, she first poured the water over it, before moving in to clean the cut. Edrick took a sharp breath as it touched the wound. Though small, the cut ached, particularly as she touched it. Luckily, her touch was gone just seconds later.

Looking around, Sylvi gulped, as she noticed the looks nearly everyone had on their faces. The only one who seemed even remotely neutral to her was Dante, whose expression was more curious than outright hostile, though Darreth, Alphyn and even Reymond made more than up for it.

Hesitating for a moment, the girl pulled out a second piece of linen, this time dousing it in alcohol. Edrick narrowed his eyes as she approached his cheek. “What are you doing with that?”, he growled and she pressed her lips together. “As I said, I clean the wound. First with water, then with alcohol”, she asked. “You don't do that in the North?”

Edrick shook his head, tensing up as the linen approached him. “We use fire for larger wounds”, he replied and now, Dante raised an eyebrow. “Don't your people use sea water?”, he asked, looking at Sylvi. The girl sighed. “My people...”, she mumbled and almost made the word a curse. “The Ironborn use all kinds of things, not all of them as effective as they'd like” She glanced at the linen. “In the Riverlands, they do it this way and we are in the Riverlands after all”

“Fine, go ahead then”, Edrick mumbled and with his permission, she pressed the linen onto the cut. Tensing up at the sharp pain flaring up in his cheek, Edrick growled, not averting his eyes from the girl, who quickly removed it again. “This should suffice”, she stated confidently, allowing herself a small smile towards Edrick.

He nodded in return. “Thank you”, he stated, as she moved to reach for the bandages. He stopped her by putting a hand onto her forearm. “This will suffice”, he said and after a moment, she took a step back, giving him the briefest of nods. “If you insist”, she mumbled. “You're welcome”

Edrick sighed, allowing himself a thin smile, more a showing of teeth than anything else. “Thank you”, he growled. “Now what is next?” Sylvi reciprocated his smile and hers was notably wider and brighter. “You're going to rest”, she said. “Viveka wishes to speak to you later today, though I think...”

The rest of her sentence was drowned out when the door got pushed open. In walked none other than Gawayne Schaffrot and Edrick narrowed his eyes at the man, who glanced around the room in a smug manner. Sylvi gulped. “Or... not?”, she asked and Gawayne raised an eyebrow. “Lady Viveka is going to speak to you now, one by one”, he proclaimed and looked at Edrick. “Starting with you”

Edrick clenched his fists. “Just me?”, he asked and Gawayne did not reply. Instead, he glanced at Sylvi, smiling thinly. “Are you done here, girl?”, he asked, putting a hand on her shoulder. Notably tensing up, she gave him a silent nod. “Good”, he spoke. “Then get out here. Your cousin wouldn't want you to spend too much time with this... filth. They're dangerous”

To this, Edrick took a sharp breath. It wouldn't lead to anything good if he'd kill that man right now, so he held back, if reluctantly. But his time would come, their time would come. These Ironborn would regret the day they put him here.

“He won't go alone”, Dante stated with determination in his voice and Gawayne raised an eyebrow. “I'm sorry, are you deaf?”, he asked in return. “I said she wants to speak with you one by one” Dante shook his head. “No way”, he stated firmly. “This is too dangerous. We're either facing her in pairs, or she can come and drag us to her by force”

Amused by Dante's display of defiance, the Ironborn approached him. “Dumb move, boy”, he snarled. “But your traitor told us everything about you. Dante Karstark, some insignificant northern pissboy. Barely a knight. He told us you're good for nothing in a fight and now you come and try to impress me?”

Just as he said this, Edrick narrowed his eyes. Swiftly, before Gawayne even saw him coming, he had grabbed the Ironborn, lifting him up a few inches and pressing him against the wall. Just for a moment, he saw surprise, maybe even fear, in these eyes. “Careful, Schaffrot”, he spat at him. “I am the one you should keep an eye on”

It was only then that he noticed the sharp knife that poked at his chest, the tip nearly digging into his flesh. He glanced down at Gawayne's hand, then up into the man's eyes, as they glared at each other. Finally, he let go of him, while Gawayne put down the knife. “Clever man”, the Ironborn said in a mocking voice. “But so be it. The Karstark boy is no threat and if it means getting over with you people faster, then I approve”

“Dante”, Darreth hissed and Dante gave his friend an apologetic look. “Can't let him go alone”, he whispered and the squire sighed, before giving him a nod. “Alright, but take care”, he warned him, before he shot Gawayne a look so vicious that even Edrick shivered. “And you”, he spat coldly. “If anything happens to them...”

Gawayne shrugged. “Then there is nothing you can do about it”, he replied. “You're going to be a thrall soon and one thing I can assure you, defiant thralls don't live very long around here” With these words, he approached Sylvi again, who still looked at them, tensed up. She gulped as he put an arm around her. “Come then!”, he ordered. “Lady Viveka does not like to wait”

Accompanied by Dante, Edrick followed the order, as they stepped out of the room. Two guards closed the door behind them, locking it once more and Sylvi sighed in relief as Gawayne separated from her. She turned, though Edrick called out for her. “Sylvi, wait”, he said and she glanced over her shoulder. Forcing himself to smile at her, he gave her a nod. “Thank you”, he spoke.

Sylvi lit up at this gesture, before she turned around, leaving them as quickly as she had come. Instead, Gawayne led Edrick and Dante down the other direction, deeper through the hallway, then up a set of stairs. It was a long, winded staircase, leading up a tower, with additional hallways protruding on each floor, until they finally reached a door that led up to the top.

Dante's breath was coming a bit faster from climbing the stairs, whereas Edrick and Gawayne barely noticed the effort it took to get up there. Gawayne stopped in front of a thick door, knocking onto the wood, while Dante leant against the wall. Edrick crossed his arms as the Ironborn opened the door, revealing a large room behind.

Viveka Codd was sitting on a chair behind a desk, a frown on her face, while reading through a document. Her spear was leaning next to her and there was a cup on the table, the reddish colour of the liquid betraying it as red wine. She looked up, first at Gawayne, then at Edrick and Dante, her face, already sporting a dark frown, visibly dropping.

As the three men walked in and Gawayne closed the door, the woman took a sip from her cup. “I asked for one”, she hissed and Gawayne gulped. “Mylady, I am sorry”, he said. “They insisted and I figured it would go faster that way” As Edrick scanned the room, he noted two silent guards sitting on chairs in the corners behind him. His brief thought about making a dash for the spear to get a weapon went up in flames at their sight.

“Doesn't change the fact that this is not what I ordered you to do”, Viveka said, as she reached for her spear. With the grace of a warrior, she had picked it up, aimed and threw it into their direction. Edrick and Gawayne dashed into one direction, Dante into the other, as the spear flew past them. Only as it his the wooden door did Edrick notice that it wouldn't have hit any of them, even if they would have remained exactly as they had stood.

“Don't displease me again, Gawayne”, she added in a low, threatening tone, as she leant back in her chair. There was only one on the other side of the table and after a moment of hesitation, Dante gave Edrick a nod, allowing him to take it. Viveka looked at them in silence, before grabbing the parchment she had been reading, putting it into one of the drawers of her desk.

“Edrick the hedge knight and Dante Karstark”, she greeted them. “Didn't expect you to show up together, but to be fair, a lot about this day hasn't been as I expected” She smirked coldly as she looked at Edrick. “I'd say that is one thing we have in common”

“What do you want?”, Edrick growled and her smirk faded. “I have been talking to your traitor”, she said. “Must say, I am not fond of that weasel. Traitors are weak, even if his treachery came to my benefit. It is not the Ironborn way”

“Will you help him with Alys?”, Dante asked and Viveka gave him a nod. “I stand by my word”, she promised. “If this girl means anything to you, I'm afraid you have to put your faith into that lovesick boy that sold you out” She reached for the wine again. “Though you should know that he has been lying to you even when he betrayed you”, she revealed, to Edrick's and Dante's surprise and intrigue.

“He doesn't know the Boleyn girl. Tried to hide it from me, but I saw right through him. He's pathetic and once I found the right tone, he confessed it all. Poured his heart right out as if I care to hear any of it”, Viveka explained and Edrick clenched his fists. Fucking Leo... If anything, he should have punched him harder.

“They treated him like an outcast in his hamlet”, Viveka said and Dante frowned. “I can't imagine why”, he said, his sarcasm darker than usual, yet at the same time, it seemed to amuse Viveka. She looked at one of her guards in the corner. “You there!”, she barked and the man stood up to salute. “Get your chair over here, it's impolite to leave a guest standing”

As the man followed the order, Dante raised an eyebrow. “Am I your guest?”, he asked, to which she only nodded. “It sounds better than hostage”, she stated. “But make no mistake, you are not free to leave. Even when I received the payment, the best you can expect from me will be to escort you back to the North. Your search for that girl is over” She shrugged. “Of course, you are free to come back anytime. If you slip past my guards, I won't even mind”, she added as she leant forwards. “Though neither would I mind to get the ransom for you once again. The Maester is still looking for proper documents, but I know your family is one of the richest in the entire North”

Dante gulped and Edrick leant forwards, placing his hands on the desk, while looking at the Ironborn woman. “What else did Leo say?”, he asked. “And where is he?” Viveka chuckled. “He's in a room of his own”, she said. “Not as pleasant as yours, but he is taken care of. And I keep my word. Once I am sure he has told me everything he knows, I will give him an escort through the Riverlands. My uncle at King Harren's court might offer further assistance”

She backed away from Edrick a bit, leaning against her chair once more. “But seriously, have you not seen what a snivelling piece of shit that guy is?”, she asked. “He's not in love with her, he's obsessed, because she's pretty, she's kind, because they had exactly one brief talk three years ago. Not my business, but you should have never taken him along with you”

“You don't say”, Edrick replied. “Never knew he'd be that bad though” He narrowed his eyes. “But why have you called for us?”, he asked. “Surely it's not just to gloat about the rat we've travelled with” Viveka shook her head. “Not just”, she admitted. “There is more. See, I have been talking to Leo about some events going on in my domain, but it turns out, he knows almost nothing. Though he told me you might know more, as you never involved him in any planning”

“That's a lie”, Dante clarified, now sitting on the chair the guard had brought him. “He was involved, he had a say and enough chances to make this work” Viveka raised an eyebrow. “Well, that doesn't speak in his favour”, she stated. “But still, he's not the brightest. Maybe you can tell me more”

“What about?”, Edrick asked and Viveka looked at him sternly. “How much do you know about the current events in this kingdom?”, she asked and Edrick exchanged a look with Dante. He shrugged, so the Karstark knight spoke up in his stead. “You're facing resistance”, he replied. “The Riverlanders fight back against you”

“And they are doing a surprisingly good job at that”, Viveka admitted. “Pieces of shit they are, but damn effective. Stronger than we thought” Dante pressed his lips together. “You have problems in your domain”, he concluded and Viveka gave him a nod, even if she looked anything but happy in that moment. “There are several rebel groups operating in this kingdom. Harrenhal has to deal with the Sons of the Trident, but up here, we've got our own issues”, she explained. “You have travelled through my lands, spoken to folk that would hide from my men, so I wonder, have you ever heard about a man they call 'Riverborn'?”

Narrowing his eyes, Dante shook his head, followed by Edrick giving her the same gesture. “Can't say I have”, he answered. “Who is it?” Viveka sighed. “Figured that much, thought it was worth a shot”, she mumbled. “The Riverborn is a nuisance, but scarily effective at that. He's our own little rebel, not as violent as the Sons down south, but that only makes his actions hurt more. He sabotages, destroys and all that without killing any of mine, leaving me to feed an ever growing number of people with an ever diminishing amount of wealth”

“That's why you took us hostage”, Dante stated. “You need the coin” Viveka gave him a nod. “Yes. There's no sense in denying it, if the Riverborn is allowed to continue, Faronhall and the Codd lands will be drained of riches”, she admitted. “I already dare not to send goods to trade down south by the river, because he'd find a way to sink the boats. That's what he's doing, destroying carts, stealing supplies, sinking boats and gold or wares with them. What he doesn't destroy, he gives to the smallfolk, good-for-nothing Riverlanders, who flock to support him”

“The coin you get won't suffice for long then”, Dante deduced. “Why keep us here if the Riverborn is just going to come and take what you have gained? Let us go and improve the relations between our houses” Viveka shot him a mixture between a glare and a smile, briefly, before regaining her composure. “You're a smooth talker”, she complimented him. “The rat warned me about it and I have to admit, he's quite right” She raised a finger. “Make no mistake, you will be ransomed. This offer does not extend to you, because I won't miss the chance of getting coin from one of the richest men in the North”, she spoke. “But you have nothing to worry. I have no doubt your uncle will pay. Same goes for Ser Alphyn and the Mormont girl”

“Leaves me, Darreth and Jorid”, Edrick concluded and Viveka now focussed solely on him again. “Which is why I wanted to speak to you first and alone”, she said, briefly glaring past him, at Gawayne. “I told you, those that cannot pay will work as my thralls. At least that's what seemed like a good idea when I met you. You look strong as an ox, surely you'd be a beast if I put you to work” To Edrick's surprise, she shook her head. “But then I realized, why should I do that? I have dozens of thralls and I could get ten men like you in a fortnight. So, I figured a way you could be of better service”

Edrick glared at her. “And if I don't want to be of service?”, he asked, to which Viveka smiled, not without sweetness to it this time. “Then you should listen even more closely, because I'm only going to offer this once”, she told him. “I don't need a thrall, I need someone who can solve the problems my lands have in a way I couldn't do”

This actually caught Edrick's interest. “Do you mean you offer me a way out of this?”, he asked and Viveka's smile widened. “Your family is unlikely to pay, I'm afraid”, she spoke. “I mean, you are a commoner, with a common family. They couldn't afford the coin I'd get for a thrall like you in a decade. So, a decade of work it would be if you refuse”

“What do you have in mind?”, Edrick asked and she emptied her cup, placing it back onto the table, as she crossed her legs in her chair. “I have told you about the Riverborn and that he has many supporters”, she replied. “In fact, Gawayne's men have found one in this very castle. We believe he is providing his master with intel right here in Faronhall”

“And this man is still alive?”, Dante asked, to which Viveka raised an eyebrow. “I am not some mindless butcher”, she declared. “Make no mistake, I will kill this man, but for the time being, I have kept my knowledge of him secret, because I want to use him. I want him to lead me right to the Riverborn and then I will kill them both”

“And his name?”, Edrick asked. Viveka took a deep breath. “Normund Tavorch”, she answered. “One of the stablehands and, as we assume, the Riverborn's man here in the castle. He's been snooping around, sticking his nose in things that shouldn't concern him. At the same time, the Riverborn intensifies his attacks” She sighed. “If I take him as my prisoner right now, I could cut him apart limb for limb and he wouldn't answer. I'm not fool enough to even try it, because he is my best bet at finding the man behind this all”

Dante's eyes widened and just a moment later, Edrick realized what she meant. “You want us to work on this”, he exclaimed and she gave him a grim nod. “The Riverlander scum won't help me out, not when it comes to their precious Riverborn. My own men are a bunch of lackwit inbreds, with the subtlety of a starving hound”, she spat and behind Edrick, Gawayne gulped. “But you on the other hand? Outsiders, my prisoners on top of that! He might be willing to trust you a bit more in this”

“And what exactly is it you want me to do then?”, Edrick asked, to which Viveka gave him a wink. “I'll do as I proclaimed in public”, she revealed. “I'll put you to work, in the stables. You try to win Normund's trust and if he is whom I believe he is, he will offer to help you. Accept, try to get closer to the Riverborn and once you figure out whom it is, tell me. Or kill him and Normund both, if it pleases you”

“Doing an Ironborn's wet work”, Edrick mumbled and Viveka shrugged. “I don't care what you call it and I don't care for your objections”, she clarified. “Normund Tavorch is already a dead man and with your help, I might be able to say the same about the Riverborn, at best even before my uncle returns from Harrenhal”

She raised a finger. “I call this your way out. Your only way, because if you do as I say, I'll let you go”, she promised. “You, Karstark's squire and that Wolfborn soldier, you can even chase after Leo and his lady love, if you want. Take your revenge on him, save the girl, be a hero, whatever, as long as you work with me on the Riverborn case”

“And if I refuse?”, Edrick asked, to which Viveka chuckled. “Then you will serve as well, but for longer”, she warned him. “If your family won't pay, you will become my thrall. Perhaps five years in the quarry will change your opinion on my offer” Smirking at him, she raised an eyebrow. “I leave the choice with you. Accept and work for your freedom, or refuse and do the same, longer and harder. One way or the other, I gain something from you”

[Accept the offer and work with Viveka] This seems like the smarter choice here. It'll give Edrick an opportunity to either do Viveka's dirty work for her and be freed, or perhaps betray her and join these rebels. Either sounds more interesting than just staying as a prisoner =) Anyway, this Riverborn guy seems like an interesting character, a bit of a Robin Hood type. Since we have brutal freedom fighters in Sons of the Tridents, it's kinda nice to have some more idealistic ones as well... if this Riverborn truly is as noble as it seems.

Hm, betraying her will be hard to pull off at the least. Viveka knows it would be possible, especially as she has to give Edrick relative freedom to do the task she bestows upon him, but she is likely to keep some sort of an insurance plan here. She wouldn't make this offer if she didn't have a plan to keep Edrick loyal.

It is indeed a different type of rebel we see here. While the Sons of the Trident have layers, ranging from borderline terrorists to actual freedom fighters, they are all at the very least okay with killing Ironborn to achieve their goals. The Riverborn however not only doesn't actively kill, he goes out of his way to avoid passively killing anyone through his actions, so that does hint at him being quite idealistic. If the right choice is picked, you might very well end up finding out more about him and if his idealism is genuine, or if it is just a clever way to win the support of the smallfolk.

  • But yeah, this part is amazing.

And I am glad that you liked it! This is longest part I have ever written, but I was very pleased with how it turned out. :)

Like the first one, it gives a great deal of insight into the younger Samuel, before he became the stone cold killer he is in the current events, though I feel this one showed even more of him as he used to be and went deeper in exploring his feelings, the naivety he still has, but especially also the connection to his siblings.

It is safe to say that this Samuel we know here is vastly different from the one we know 20 years later. The focus is centered on the fact that he was just a random boy, with ordinary hopes and dreams. Some standard drama, like the one with Juline. He was an emotional boy, loving his family deeply, so I wanted to focus on giving them characters of their own. His feelings are especially strong towards Ryder, who he looks up to and is determined to be as good as him in the future. The first two parts are centered on the character development and later on I can promise, if my plan works and I can do it properly, they might be the best parts to come. ;)

That actually makes it all the more tragic what he eventually became in the story proper, perhaps not an evil man, but a very cold, dulled guy who has lost so much this way younger version of him still has.

Yes, Samuel's motivation was to become a knight or a soldier along with his brother, to make his family proud and prove to them that he can be just as good. In the end, he became the very opposite of a knight. He became a mercenary, with next to no morals, and a vengeance deep enough that would force him to make evil decisions. Because he lost all of that and everything he held dear, his sole purpose was to hunt down the man who ruined his life, killed his family and will stop at nothing until he fulfills his purpose. My parts really explain on just how innocent and young he was, who only has his family to survive. In the next parts, we will get into more depth with some action and more drama. Hopefully :)

Ah, thank you for writing, this makes Samuel's development to come all the more fun for me =)

And I can not wait for that! I'm extremely invested into this character and I am looking forward to the next parts featuring him! :)

Yeah, that was a major red flag there. Alys never thought of Leo while she went through the events of Book 1 and I can confirm, she doesn't even remember him all that much. They had a good talk exactly once and she was pretty much the first and only girl who ever showed him even a semblance of affection and sympathy, leading to Leo, the awkward outcast and loner, developing a super crush on her and now he is hoping that she might actually return his feelings if he ends up saving her life.

You know, that is one thing I really love about Samuel. Back when I first featured him in the story, I didn't even know all this yet, but it kinda developed in the story itself and my view on his character and also in your backstory for him. I really look forward for future Samuel parts if you wish to write them, they should be a lot of fun :)

More action and drama you say? That sounds great, bring it on =) But yeah, I tried to make the readers feel sympathy and pity for Samuel and I believe in some cases I succeeded at that, but these parts really drive home just how much he has lost. Means the small victories he did gain in the story itself so far are of particular importance to him.

The Riverborn does indeed sound a lot like Ironborn, possibly a name taken out of spite for the brutal opressors he fights and with methods they would never even think of. I am glad you enjoy Edrick's storyline in Book 2 more than the stuff in Book 1, though you probably see why it was necessary to spend time building up some characters and establishing some stuff. The current plot will be a lot more fast-paced and I look forward to get more into it :)

  • Oh, I do eventually hope that both storylines will lead to equally interesting outcomes :D I can confirm though, accepting Viveka's offer and actually going through with it are entirely different things. More twists will happen in Edrick's storyline and things might not be as easy as they seem at the very moment ;)

  • 1)It seems that Edrick and co. will have to find Robin Hood now,it seems to me that the knight won't follow his main quest (find Alys) for a loooooong time

Indeed, the goal, or even just pursuing it, seem to have been pushed far away. Edrick's mission has always been a difficult one, though right now, he has to deal with what is effectively another's problems. Leo is in a better position, but even he doesn't have particularly great chances. At least for the time being, Edrick will remain at Faronhall, either a prisoner or working for Viveka.

2)I suppose that soon Edrick party will be separate since I doubt that Vivieka will let the important prisoners left their room

Your assumption is a good one. Viveka is likely more lenient with the unimportant prisoners, giving Edrick, Darreth and Jorid a chance to actually do what she wants of them, but Dante, Alphyn and Reymond should expect to be watched closely, because while she is relatively okay with the first three to escape, on account of them being unimportant, she absolutely wants the second three to be ransomed.

3)Oh well,it seems that Leo really want to be hated uh?I will look forward to the next time we see him

He doesn't want to be hated, but he's really not thinking clearly here. He's pretty much an extremely awkward and lovesick boy, always shunned by others, who has fallen hopelessly for the only girl that ever seemed to care for him, if just for a talk. To his credit, it was a long talk and they got along very well. I myself would say he is not to be hated though, more to be pitied. He's not an evil person, just a very disturbed and lonely one, as well as not particularly intelligent.

Also this riverborn sounds much too decent to kill and one has to consider the consequences of killing him( also sounds a bit of a characterbiulding choice if edrick chooses to kill some one possibly innocent to spare himself a shitty time or if he chooses to go stand through the hard times and come up stronger) but it will be cool nontheless.

[Accept the offer and work with Viveka] It's not an unfair deal, even seems reasonably doable and if they do the job well they may not even have to get blood on their hands.

Fucking Leo... even when he isn't present he annoys me. Turns out that he has absolutely zero connection to Alys. And yet he sees fit to involve himself and label Dante a villain when he doesn't even know what he's talking about.

So since this offer of Viveka's doesn't extend to Dante, what would she have wanted to speak to him alone about?

Loved this part btw! Something about Viveka really maximizes my enjoyment.

  • Fucking Leo... even when he isn't present he annoys me. Turns out that he has absolutely zero connection to Alys. And yet he sees fit to involve himself and label Dante a villain when he doesn't even know what he's talking about.

Yeah, particularly Leo's hatred for Dante is not quite rational. He does believe he has a connection to Alys, though she'd likely disagree, as they really only had a single talk, pleasant enough to fuel his obsession. Actually, that made him even more of an outcast in his hamlet. The thing is, his entire betrayal is a result of that, irrational obsession which he has lost himself in. He sees Dante, who is intended to become Alys' betrothed after all, as the biggest threat, so this betrayal was particularly motivated out of the slim hope that if he gets taken care of, Leo has Alys all for himself. He probably didn't expect Viveka to be so pragmatic about the whole thing. There are other Ironborn who would treat them far less fairly and the darkest aspect of Leo's motivation was fuelled by the hope that Viveka turns out to be more like them and less focussed on actually reasonable goals. I'd say, he is kinda delusional by now, unable to admit how much he screwed up, how little his chances with Alys are and how hopeless his situation is. With him, it's that one unreachable crush we all had in our teenage years, but taken way too far and he never quite grew out of it. I actually consider it a bit tragic from this standpoint, as Leo is pretty much trapped in his current situation, but then again, he has only himself to blame.

So since this offer of Viveka's doesn't extend to Dante, what would she have wanted to speak to him alone about?

With him, as well as with Alphyn and Reymond, she wanted to discuss on how to best write to their families, so that they accept the offer she makes them. She knows how stubborn northern lords can be (and coincidentally, Brogar Karstark and Worland Mormont are pretty much the most stubborn lords in the entire kingdom), so she figures if her prisoners assist her, the chances to successfully broker a deal will increase. After all, she doesn't need prisoners whose families refuse to pay and since she figures that they want nothing but to be freed, they have a mutual interest in making this deal work.

Loved this part btw! Something about Viveka really maximizes my enjoyment.

Hehe, this is very nice to hear :) I have hoped for her to be a well-liked character, but wasn't sure if I'd achieve this, considering she is nominally an antagonist in Edrick's storyline, on account of being the one that keeps him locked up. She'll be important in this storyline, so it's a great thing that you consider her to be enjoyable. There's a lot more to come =)
