  • This definitely would have merited an R rating, so I'm sure there's plenty more stuff in the vault or in concept art that pushed for that rating. You don't get Sam Raimi helming a horror project and at the very least try to let him give some classic hard-R Scares.

Thankfully some of that darkness still remains in the final film with how much light gore & injuries there are, characters get maimed severely.

It would have been fuckin' metal. This really makes me think that at one point there were talks to have Multiverse of Madness be rated R. There's no way the stunt coordinators made this while knowing the movie would be PG13.

Early reactions to Werewolf by Night are out, with many people calling it a love letter to classic Universal monster flicks, as well as praising the practical effects, blood and gore, the characters (particularly Jack Russel and Elsa Bloodstone) and the schlockiness of it all. It's also been confirmed that the special has a runtime of 53 minutes (but I'm going to assume a real runtime of 45 minutes when not including credits), which is much more than I thought it'd be.

Seems like Michael Giacchino knocked it out of the park!

  • That's awesome. I've been getting pretty hyped recently after hearing Giacchino was making his directorial debut with this. Dude's scored SOOO many movies it's going to be cool to see what his eye is like behind the camera lens... so to speak.

I've also heard rumours that this might get a TV-MA rating in North America (or regional equivalent for you) due to some severe gore shown off in it. But it all adds to the campy old-fashioned horror style which intrigues me even more!

  • The special has been confirmed to be TV-14, despite them apparently trying shoot for a more mature rating. It seems like it being in black and white managed to keep it under TV-MA.

From an interview with Michael Giacchino by Hollywood Reporter.

Michael Giacchino, Werewolf by Night is a bloody good time.

    (Laughs.) We need that quote.

I submitted it to Disney! Anyway, while watching, I assumed it was Marvel Studios’ first R-rated or TV-MA project, but according to the Internet, it’s TV-14. Did the black and white help counter the blood and keep the rating at TV-14?

You know what? Maybe. You could be right. I’m not sure. We had always assumed it would be TV-MA, but I wasn’t always involved with what was happening on that end in terms of ratings and all of that. And so I’m not sure, but I am sure you are absolutely right that the black and white did help keep us within a certain range.

At the very least, it's nice to know that Marvel Studios is finally willing to push things further, even if it took over 10 years lmao. First with Multiverse of Madness and now this, then in the future we'll have Marvel Zombies which'll actually be TV-MA and Deadpool 3 which will assumedly get an R, whenever that releases.

Right, I forgot about the Zombies show.

It's still a seperate part of the Fox universe.

Whatever the case, they'll probably poke fun at it in the film, since in Deadpool 2, already, the main crux of that film was "Logan dies at the end of his most recent movie, fuck it, now I'll do it too!"

  • I really really liked the newest episode of She-Hulk! Might be my favourite of the season so far. It's a more focused and "serious" episode without a side story going on, and centers on Jen's lack of self esteem which has been bubbling over the course of the season. A handful of new characters get introduced and their chemistry with one another, as well as Jen, is weirdly heartwarming. CG's a little rough in the first half but it smooths over at the midway point. The episode overall had a different feel to it than the others, not sure if I can put my finger on why though.

    Spoilers

    • Look at these fuckin' Z-List characters lmao. The only one I actually recognised was Porcupine.
    • I really liked the group therapy in the the episode, especially when Jen pours her heart out and her expression gets more pained and she goes on and her voice starts to crack a bit. Great acting by Tatiana Maslany.
    • I think most people would have gathered that something fishy was going on with Josh by the end of the last episode. I wonder who he's working for. The only character I could possibly think of that would want Hulk blood is the Leader, and with Blonsky being a recurring character I could see the season connecting to the Thunderbolts by the end of it.
  • The Don Cheadle-led 'Armor Wars' Disney Plus series is now being reworked as a feature film!

Feels weird. We've known about this series for a long while now, but I guess the development and writing hasn't gone so smoothly?

Marvel Studios has shaken up its Armor Wars project, and now what was to have been a series for Disney+ will be redeveloped as a feature film.

The move essentially pushes back the title further down the development slate.

The studio was committed in getting the story told the right way and in that process realized that a feature was better suited for the project.

Don Cheadle, who is reprising his longtime Marvel Cinematic Universe role as Colonel James “Rhodey” Rhodes, AKA War Machine, remains on board to star. Yassir Lester, who was acting as head writer on the series, will remain as its feature scribe.

This week's episode of She-Hulk really slowed things down and addressed a lot of Jen stuff regarding her self-esteem and self-acceptance she's been facing ever since becoming She Hulk.

There also wasn't a title card at all in this, as far as I can remember, which was an interesting move.

I loved the montage of her obsession at checking her phone at the start of the episode. The moment where she's driving in the car, and it keeps switching from tense phone scrolling to the epic vista of the forest, as if she's about to come upon something life-changing, which she eventually kinda does...

I want to give kudos to the director of photography for this episode -- I can't find them on imdb right now but -- this episode had quite a few neat aerial shots from straight up on the ceiling of a room or a courtyard (or that montage). It was unique.

The side-characters in this episode were also lots of fun. Really felt like some obscure comics deep cuts, which is cool this series seems to be doing that quite a bit.
The CGI for She Hulk in that therapy scene was her best yet. Great facial performance... though again, still edging into uncanny valley a bit?

    And spoilers time --

I knew it last week, Josh is SUS AF. I know my action/adventure/romance tropes well, and he really seemed like the "perfect guy falls into heartbroken/love-loss woman's life, but for nefarious purposes". Dude was too perfect.

There's still some stuff we haven't yet seen from Emil Blonsky/Abomination according to a trailer from a while ago.
I seem to remember a shot of Abomination in a white suit, partying in a crowd. I don't think he's gonna be evil though -- maybe it's a shot from the finale, where him and everyone at the Wellness Retreat have a party?

Also DAAAAMN still no Daredevil!! Marvel really teasing us HARD.
"Yeah, we'll show him in the trailers, but you don't get to see him until episode 8 or 9." Daaamn it.
But it's either next week or the one after (or both!)
After Josh's ghosting and the twist revealed, Jen's world is gonna turn dark. And how best to show that? With a night-time focused episode. And who loves the night time? Daredevil. Mic drop. 🎤 It's gotta be next week.

Feels like they might team up to track down her blood/the incel hate-group. And SHulk is in her super-suit in the trailers too, so... hmmm it all depends on when Marvel has planned for that Super Suit reveal. Will it be the final episode like other series? Or not?...

Also Tatiana Maslany is cute yo

  • That's certainly unexpected, but not unwelcome. Considering the kind of CG that'd need to go into something like this, this could be seen as an upgrade. I wonder if this means it'll get a title change to something like War Machine: Armor Wars.

    New Wakanda Forever trailer!

Okay this movie is going to be damn good!!
Bit dissapointed they revealed who the new Black Panther was in this trailer though. I figured it would have been a mystery in the film itself, maybe having multiple people take up the mantle before the end.

Not too hyped about Shuri IMO, I was rooting for Nakia or Okoye.

  • edited October 2022

It looks incredible, and yeah, I'm surprised they decided to clearly hint who it is.

Considering the pattern of dots on the suit, it's very clearly Shuri. While it certainly does make more of a narrative sense, I was also rooting for Nakia and Okoye. If Letitia Wright didn't turn out to be the way she is I would have been totally fine with her. Still crossing fingers and huffing copium that there will actually turn out to be multiple Black Panthers lmao.

It also doesn't help that Shuri is front and center on the poster and the Black Panther right behind her.

The movie looks great, but it has a lot to live up to considering... literally everything, so I really hope that they not just knock it out of the park, but launch it into the stratosphere.

HOLD THE PRESSES. Someone pointed out something in the trailer and it's pretty interesting.

Potential spoiler for the movie (It's in the trailer but still)

In the trailer at 1:29, there is a blink and you'll miss it shot of what seems to be a different Black Panther suit.

You'll notice the lack of beads on the mask.

It's also clearly another woman. The body of the suit however seems to be the same as the final shot of the trailer. Now it could just be a very minor error and for whatever reason they just didn't include the dots in this one shot, or this is just a slightly earlier version of the new suit. But this might actually give credence to the theory that multiple characters will be taking up the mantle.

  • Hmmm... Not too sure about that theory being proven right over a blurry shot in the corner of the screen. It could be the good old Youtube compression at work there, removing the visible dots from the mask.

The body looks the same to Shuri's costume, and the gold outline around the eyes looks similar too. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Gotta say though, whoever has been editing the trailers for this film is doing an outstanding job! Goosebumps for both of them now!
The buildup into silence, with the silent landing and reveal of the new Black Panther was sweeeet!

Episode 8 of She-Hulk is probably my favourite episode of the series thus far lol. It's funny, the character dynamics are really charming, fun action sequences, She-Hulks CG is probably the best it's ever been (especially towards the end), and it ends in a very interesting spot for Jennifer. Of course, I can't not talk about the appearance of a certain character everyone has been waiting for. A certain client of Lucas, the superhero costume designer. He's pretty funny, he's got good chemistry with the cast, and his appearance doesn't feel jarring, like it's not a "alright here he is now shut up". That's right, I'm talking about my boy Leap Frog!

Next week's the finale! Looking forward to seeing how things turn out for Jen!

    Spoilers

    • MAH BOOYYYYYYY!!!
    • He's pretty much as he was from the original series, albeit a touch more playful, as well as being more acrobatic than what we've seen before.
    • I do wish that they didn't CG him so much during the carpark fight. Especially since a lot of it, aside from the jumping down the building scene, could have easily been done practically. At least the Lilypad fight towards the end was all practical.
    • The chemistry between Jen and Matt was great. They work really well together, I hope we see more of them teaming up in the MCU in the future.
    • Also they did the deed. 10/10.
    • Another reference to Wolverine with Nikki's makeup brush claws and her saying "Snikt!"
    • The things Intelligencia did at the end was super fucked up. Straight up revenge porn of her. I'm surprised Disney let them get away with that.
    • One of the dudes in the mask at the end was clearly the creepy guy. You can see his hair tufts sticking out from underneath the mask.
  • edited October 2022

Mmm yeah that was a great episode!

Some very fun fight scenes (one looking really wonky with CGI for something that should be so practical??), some awesome chemistry between She-Hulk and the other guy, and man, this show really knows how to insert fanservice and play off the very real insane vitriol against this nice show.

Great twist ending too. Can't believe it's gonna be over next week.

    Oh MANNNN
    MATT IS BACK
    MATT IS FUNNY
Oh he's so fun in this episode.
I love how the first thing out of Jen's mouth to him is "Who's this asshole?" Which I'm sure was deliberate to get under the haters' skin, passionately in love with their brooding, masculine Daredevil.
But guess what haters, they get it done by the end of this episode! Woo! I've heard they have quite a romance in the comics so it's really interesting they pulled off their first big fling in his first comeback episode.

Second cool thing: Hallway fight. They had a hallway fight oh yeah. Just what we need.

And that ending? I'm gonna have to watch it again, it kinda passed me by a bit quickly on what they hacked her phone for. But, yikes Jen! Is this her 'Hulk Out' moment? Seems like she was really surprised by the end, saying "that wasn't me" with her expression.
I thought She-Hulk's whole thing was she's so much better at Hulking than Bruce and doesn't have the split-persona thing.

Okay, I may have been a bit too sheltered or something, because I don't think I've ever known what "Revenge porn" is, -- until now -- which is what people are saying Josh ended up doing to Jen. Posting explicit, nude, "pornographic" pictures of her without her consent in an attempt to humiliate, embarrass, and shame her (as society generally finds nudity to be indecent and "wrong").
That's.. horrifying. Especially so when that makes Jen snap. But such a great twist and gut-punch to Jen's character growth this whole season. Bravo, Jessica Gao, for getting Disney/Marvel to sign off on that plot point. It's very socially dark, and kind of educational for me(?). What a slimy thing for someone to do...

Whatever it is, seems she might have a final showdown in court in the finale if she's in custody, then probably a mandated final fight showdown as is per usual for Marvel series.(and her own words)

(And anyway, She-Hulk is pretty fun so far, especially this episode, and my sister literally doesn't know what she's missing out on, unfortunately.)

  • Werewolf by Night is out and it's pretty damn good! The characters are really fun and hammy, Elsa Bloodstone and Jack Russell in particular are the standouts, well choreographed action, a good amount of blood and some gore peppered in, lots of practical effects mixed in with some CG, the cinematography was excellent, and I love Man Thing. Michael Giacchino did a great job with this and I hope he does more stuff like this for the MCU in the future. Hell, Blade just lost its director, give the job to him! Or give him another Marvel character to give the Halloween special treatment. The Marvel universe has no shortage of freaks.

    Spoilers

There's some pretty good deaths in this. The dude getting the crossbow bolt shot up his chin and into his mouth had me cringe.
Loved the "one take" scene with the werewolf attacking the guards in the hallway.
    I love Ted.

The season finale of She-Hulk is out and while I can see this having a mixed reaction, I personally enjoyed it very much. Wildly unexpected, pretty damn funny and very meta, while also being a bit of an asspull but I'll let it slide cause I had fun with it, I just hope this doesn't become a repeat thing lol. I do think the episode needed to be like 5 minutes longer cause the pacing at the end is like lightspeed fast, and the main arc does end pretty abruptly. Also after a bit of a break, this episode has an after credits scene.

I really enjoyed the series overall. I do think the humour was a bit hit or miss early on but as the series got into a groove I found myself enjoying it more and more. I really like Jen, she's a very relatable character and her struggles, aside from the... super powers, feel fairly realistic. The rest of the supporting cast are also great. A lot of them are very fun and charming. I hope they do a second season, out of all the live action MCU shows thus far, She-Hulk feels like something that could go on for multiple seasons. Just give the VFX more time in the oven and put in more lawyer stuff please.

    Spoilers

    • All the incel shit in the episode feels like it was ripped straight out of real life. I have seen so many fucking people who talk and act exactly like this.
    • For a second there I thought that Nikki was actually behind Intelligencia.
    • Nikki forcing Pug to act like an asshole was great.
    • I thought the Disney+ player crashed when it went to the home screen.
    • I can't believe Jen broke into Marvel Studios, beat up a bunch of security guards and barged into Kevin's office only to find out he was a robot. He even has a hat!
    • I very much enjoyed all the potshots the show took at the MCU, like certain repetitive storybeats and character tropes. This was certainly different.
    • Matt makes a surprise return and even has a bbq with Jen's family Fast and Furious style.
    • I am not the biggest fan of how the Intelligencia stuff ended since it just... ends after the meta stuff. Wish we actually got to see the confrontation in the event hall.
    • Bruce makes a return and he has a son now! There's been rumours for a while now that Marvel Studios was working on a World War Hulk movie and this seems to support that.
  • edited October 2022

In unexpected news, Harrison Ford has officially been cast for the role of Thaddeus "Thunderbolt" Ross, replacing William Hurt who unfortunately passed away earlier this year from cancer. He will be making his appearance in Captain America: New World Order and The Thunderbolts.

That's certainly interesting. I wonder how much money Disney dumped at his house for him to take the role, considering how much he seems to hate being in blockbuster movies that aren't Indiana Jones.

  • edited October 2022

That She-Hulk finale was certainly wild!
I enjoyed it, though I wish they'd have given it maybe 10 more minutes, since the ending really flew by.

They take the plot this week in a direction we don't expect -- very, very meta -- but I was okay with it. Leads to some truly crazy stuff.
If they're giving She-Hulk this much slack on her 4th wall leash, I can only imagine what they might let Deadpool do!

Overall, a good enjoyable show that wasn't so focused on building up mega-stakes and offers some great episodic storytelling, deep comics cuts, and surprising forward-thinking by the writing team, given how topical the main conflict of the show was.

    Now, spoiler stuff.

    • The opening credits being a shot-for-shot remake of the original Universal Incredible Hulk show was really cool!
Also, kind of a "screw you" as well? She-Hulk was originally created to stop Universal from making a female spin-off to their Hulk series, making them the original IP creators of a "new" female Hulk.

    • Okay, that 4th wall break was insane. Breaking through to Marvel Studios, speaking with the writers, then speaking with KEVIN (sort of) himself?
Never would have guessed that to ever happen.

    • Ooh, and great design for KEVIN too! There's this rounded metal shape poking out the front, with a flat rounded shape above it with KEVIN imprinted -- just like those baseball caps Feige always wears!

    • I do wish we had seen any of that trial where Jen would absolutely smoke Todd on the stand. I get they were pressed for time, or probably couldn't have figured it out (its been mentioned that the reason there aren't many trial scenes is the writers' lack of experience writing proper legal stuff)
Good idea to scrap Hulk Todd and the blood plot. Felt way too telegraphed and expected near the start, but they also kind of didn't do much to further that plot for the middle section of the show, so, yeah...

Fingers crossed for a Season 2, IMO.
This show could do with a follow-up. I just like this slice-of-life comedy legal stuff.

Ooh!! And it's a good thing I read this article last week about She-Hulk's comic origins and her signature 4th-wall break powers.
It's apparently very common for her to talk with her writers and artists of the comic book she's in, either to stop them from doing something, or making them skip to the climax. Even "ripping out pages" to do so.

...But I wish they had set up that reality-breaking a little more in the series. She does strictly 4th-wall break "hosting" throughout the show, but she does force one "Previously On" segment in the middle of an episode -- except that was for our benefit, not hers. This episode, she mostly escapes the show's writing to keep her show from looking predictable or "bad".
But that was such a leap in her "4th-wall logic", I do wish it could have been set-up a bit better? Eh, maybe that's just me

  • Finally got to watching Werewolf By Night 🌙

It was a great special! Felt much longer than it's 50 minute run time, and a nice standalone film to introduce a couple characters without needing a mega-budget 2hr film or multi-week TV event.

Michael Giacchino has some great directing chops! I loved the use of some huge panels of light in the maze to give some extra black-and-white juxtaposition. The titular "Werewolf sequence" was a spooky one-shot transformation, and there's an especially cool one-shot fight scene as the camera slowly zooms in on the action.

The film surprisingly had some typical Marvel comedy, I was expecting either light horror or campy dialogue the whole way through, but the characters are played with enough levity to joke around which surprised me.

I will say, the use of CGI for Man-Thing was nearly always in the uncanny valley, though that's once again on Marvel rushing their VFX artists.
But there is a ton of practical costume use in the climax which was great! It looks kinda goofy -- which is intentional obviously given the style -- but the fights were very well-choreographed, and very brutal. I had tons of jaw-dropped moments or exclamations of surprise.

Just saw Thor 4: More Thor. Er, Thor: Love and Thunder. It was good! I had a couple issues in that it didn't take itself seriously enough throughout the entire film, but it was still very enjoyable, full of laughs, and has plenty of heart-warming/breaking moments.
They also tie the title of the movie right into the film at one point I thought was neat.
No idea why this movie got so much hate from the fans, or that "Taika went too far". Nah, he upped the comedy a bit from Ragnarok, but it didn't take away from the film too much.

The use of the Guardians in this was short and sweet. Loved it when Nebula grabbed and gun to put down the goats and Mantis immediately joined her lmao.
Gonna love seeing them come back next month.

Jane Foster is back, and now the Mighty Thor. Natalie Portman did a good job at being the excited, nervous new Superhero unsure of what she just leapt into.
I think they should have maybe lengthened her transformation into Thor. Maybe give us a little of her surprise, or getting used to the role, training with Valkyrie maybe. She kind of just... shows up later being superhero-y and I wasn't expecting that so soon.

This movie also went full Space God Epic, the whole sequence in Omnipotence City with all the different gods was a bit silly but fun overall (take my soul Bao, God of Dumplings). Russel Crowe as Zeus was a lot of fun as well, I really liked his accent and the CGI on all his Thunderbolt flaunting was great.

The Black and White realm was really cool! Such a nice unique filming style to just jam into the middle of your film.

I also really love how much this movie pushed for its Space Rock Opera theme, brought to you by Guns N' Roses. Nearly all the licensed songs are theirs, wow they got paid a lot for this one.
The credits sequence was also really awesome, with all the names resembling iconic Rock Band name designs.

Some stuff I just didn't like:
The Goats got old after a while. Quite a lot of the Shadow Monsters had uncanny valley CGI. What the hell was up with that Axl Floating Head scene?? The first Shadow Monsters scene was just way too dark. I couldn't see what was going on half the time.

But I enjoyed how the movie could slow down and get a bit somber when it wanted to (the Thor/Jane montage to Abba was bittersweet). The climax/beating the villain scene was heart-breaking, more to follow in spoilers. Love all the scenes with Thor and the kids.
I also love where the movie ended with Thor, and excited for what that could being for the future.

Also, this is on me, but I'm impressed Marvel Studios created a moment where my parents -- the confused, not knowledgeable "fans" of the MCU -- both screamed in excitement at that mid-credits scene while I was the one who remained in confusion. (I don't know who Brett Goldstein is)

    Spoilers here

Okay, so, I really loved the moment where it's revealed that being Thor is draining Jane of her strength, and if she keeps using it it will allow the cancer to kill her.
The moment where she shows up to help defeat Gorr was awesome, but had such a dark, sad undertone to it because you know she's stepping up to do one last good thing, then die. Genius!
Loved her final hero moment. Also loved that the Korg not knowing her name running joke ended with him finally getting it right, Dr. Jane Foster!

Oh yeah and when did Sif come back?? I know she was in Loki (as a TVA trap) but she's just... here? And here to stay too? I thought she died

ABC has a Black Panther special on right now, going over the cultural impact and history of the film, its comic, and some behind the scenes.
(And also promotion for the new film -- I call it the Disney Company Nepotism Special, as nearly everyone featured is related to Marvel Studios or ABC Studios, or just constant disclaimers about "Black Panther is owned by Marvel/Disney, Parent company of ABC" or "Watch Black Panther now on D+!" Idk its just a lot of corporate promotion and legal disclaimers for something so recognizable)

Overall it really is a pretty interesting production, and they tease something about the new Black Panther costume at one point.

Interviewer Robin Roberts asks: Who will we see take up the new, important, Black Panther Outfit?

Ryan Coogler: I'm not gonna give it away, but I will say that whoever steps up to earn it, earns it, as you'll see happen throughout the film.

So... it might not be Shuri? I didn't know they were still keeping it up in the air, but literally 90% of the internet is convinced it'll be Letitia Wright, so I'm unsure why they're playing up the mystery of it here.

  • I could make a Sony-Verse thread, I could not, I dunno... but for now, some cool Spider-Verse casting news!

Aw yeah! That should be great.

  • I watched Wakanda Forever, and I thought it was fantastic!

It's a wonderful, but bittersweet farewell to Chadwick Boseman and the character of T'Challa. It's the most serious MCU project so far, with much of the narrative dealing with grief and loss. It's extremely character driven with only a handful of humourous moments. Angela Bassett is a powerhouse of an actress. Everytime she steps into a room, all eyes are on her, and she gives one of the most powerful, booming performances in the entirety of the MCU. Letitia Wright, despite her... unfortunate views on modern medicine, is an exceptional actress, playing the films emotional core and stands toe to toe with Angela Bassett. I need to give praise to Danari Gurira, Winston Duke, Lupia Nyong'o and Tenoch Huerta, who give it their all, with each of them having their own moment to shine. I also enjoyed Dominique Thorne as Riri Williams and would like to see more of her.

I'm surprised at how good the underwater scenes were in the movie. Aside from maybe a couple shots, they looked really damn good overall. There's also some really great practical effects in the movie (Thank God). The Talokan (originally Atlantean's in the comics), were also really cool throughout the movie, and they have a great and surprisingly horror-esque introduction in the movie. I really liked Namor and I think he belongs in the fairly small hall of great Marvel villains. He's very intimidating and powerful, though I do think his motivation is a teeny bit confusing (or I just missed something).

Of course I do have some issues with the movie. While I enjoyed Everett Ross popping up again, his appearance ultimately means very little for the movie and he's pretty much there as a connection to the wider MCU. The CG in the climax is pretty damn rough. It was actually great for a large chunk of the movie (with some spotty moments here and there), then when it hits the big CGI fight it gets pretty funky. The fight scenes also tend to get a little shaky and have an over abundance of cuts.

Wakanda Forever begins itself by breaking your heart but mends it together by the end with, in my opinion, a very poignant and satisfying finale that concludes a number of storylines, while leaving some things open for a potential future. There's also a single, but emotional mid-credits scene to close things off.

Thank God they pulled it off.
